I thought that with the COVID years of 2020 and 2021 that things would improve during 2022, at least that is what I wished for at the start of the year: how wrong I was to be! With the massive economic knee-jerk following Putin's invasion of Ukraine, things have got tight for many both here in the UK and elsewhere. The fallout from the huge rise in inflation triggered pay demands and consequential economic unrest in the form of strikes. The railways were the first to embark on the action and this has really had a massive effect on the travelling public and all this just as numbers were beginning to pick up post-COVID. The number of charters fell through the floor from the summer onwards as did my trips out with very little of interest to see. The exception was LSL's short-lived but bold move to cash in on Avanti's woes during September running 'proper' locomotive-hauled trains up and down the West Coast route. All in all, a pretty depressing year, let's hope 2023 sees a resolution to our very many problems!

1. New Year's day on the NLR (well not quite!)-02.01.22
I am not at all sure as to why the Northampton and Lamport Railway (NLR) were holding their New Year mince pie and sherry specials on the second day of the month this year but my wife and I booked tickets and went anyway in an effort to support this struggling heritage line. We took our first train ride of the year and enjoyed a little snack on board. The railway was reassuringly busy which was a positive thing.

2. A short winter's walk-03.01.22
The final public holiday of the Christmas and New Year breaks found me out around the village for a winter's walk. There were two interesting workings that I observed while I was out.

3. Clearance work in Roade cutting-07.01.22

With the 'old line' or the Weedon loop closed for an extended period to complete various work including improvements to drainage, the opportunity was also taken to undertake some embankment management around Roade. Particular attention was paid to the area that caused a closure of the route back in October due to a fallen tree .

4. How many Class 66s on a Sunday?-09.01.22
With the fast lines still closed for extended works being undertaken and taking advantage of the much-reduced timetable as a result of COVID two engineering trains were sat, engines off, across the field from home. With a Class 66 at each end of the two trains and another on the regular 4L48 meant that I observed and photographed five members of the class within about half an hour. In addition, I also captured the now regular Class 88 hauled 4S10 Tilbury to Coatbridge flow.

5. A dull & cold January day-25.01.22
With what seemed like an eternity of anticyclonic grey dullness having dominated the weather I gave up waiting for a good day to get out and take some photographs! I timed my walk to get some provisions with the passage of the 0Z45 light engine move that had been flagged by a number of others on the internet and later timed my afternoon walk with a little freight action.

6. The first 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' of the year-29.01.22
It may well have been a dark and dull January morning but as I was heading to Milton Keynes for non-railway activities I decided to try my luck at photographing the first 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' of the year hauled, as usual, by 86259. The image is pretty dire but significant in terms of the railway year!

7. 0Z88-30.01.22

Having worked the 'Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express'  yesterday , 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' is seen in much better weather returning light engine to its stabling point in Rugby's former carriage sidings.

8. My first trip with Andy of 2022-02.02.22
My first trip out with Andy for 2022 found us venturing out locally in his trusty Nissan Micra. We took a drive over to Peterborough to have a look at the recently re-opened Werrington dive-under and then returned to the MML at Harrowden Junction. Amazingly, this was the first time that I had returned to the junction just north of Wellingborough since the electrification work was completed.

9. A day off work-04.02.22
Unusually, a day off work coincided with some nice weather! I took a couple of short walks out timed with the passage of some more interesting workings on the nearby WCML in my home village of Roade.

10. An hour at Kingsthorpe-11.02.22
Working half a day at work and with a good forecast, I took my camera with me. After work, I took the long route home via a stop for an hour at a chilly Kingsthorpe that coincided with the lunchtime cluster of freights.

11. 'The Powerful Pennine Panorama'-12.02.22
On a chilly and blowy morning, I popped out to capture the passing of 'The Powerful Pennine Panorama' charter. Unlike most charters that pass along the southern WCML this one took the Northampton line rather than the 'old route' via Weedon.

12. Some freight & an HST-23.02.22
With a day off work, a quick scan of RTT revealed what would be an HST returning from Arlington's facility (Eastleigh) to its base at Crewe conveying a freshly refurbished coach. Earlier in the day, I nipped out for a few freights in Roade cutting.

13. It was just like the WCML of old!-26.02.22
With two AC electrics leading trains heading north along the southern WCML within twenty minutes of each other it felt like the clock was being turned back twenty years! Firstly, the immaculately turned out 87002 led an equally smart set of stock on 'The Clansman' charter from Euston to Inverness followed a short time later by 86259 leading another 'Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express' to Carlisle that it would take as far as Carnforth. To add to the occasion the sun was out on this bitterly cold frosty but bright morning!

14. A pair of footexs-27.02.22

Following on from yesterday's AC hauled extravaganza today the WCML was treated to two more locomotive-hauled trains heading to London! They were only going as far as Wembley Central conveying Liverpool fans to the EFL's Carabao Cup being played against Chelsea at the adjacent ground. The weather was sparkling which really got the enthusiasts out to the lineside in their numbers with them occupying all the nearby local spots that I could think of! Indeed, some travelled some distance for this spectacle including the renowned railway photographer Martin Loader aka Hondawanderer .

15. A trip to Frome-03 & 04.03.22
I took a brief trip to Frome in order to deliver a car to my mum and her partner. I drove the car down, taking a break at Westbury station, to Somerset from Northamptonshire and the next day took the train back again.

16. 'The Cumbrian Coast Express' & a TPE interloper-12.03.22
On a lovely bright early spring morning I popped out to see the passing of 'The Cumbrian Coast Express' and later in the morning the unusual occurrence of a TransPennine Express NOVA3 set making its way to Wolverton Works for, as yet, undisclosed attention.

17. 0Z88 & 5H72 within 2 minutes of each other!-13.03.22
A regular Sunday jaunt following a Saturday 1Z86 is the passage of the Class 86 running light engine back to its base in Rugby's carriage sidings. Today, its passing time coincided with a movement of two ROG converted coaches from Derby to Willesden.

18. Trip to London-17 & 18.03.22

A couple of days in London with my wife is something that we have not done for almost exactly two years prior to the pandemic. Then, back in March 2020 , we even stayed in the same hotel as we did this time which is located, very conveniently, on Northumberland Avenue. This time we enjoyed a superb evening's entertainment at the Kit-Kat Club (aka The Playhouse Theatre) enjoying Eddie Redmayne playing The Emcee in Cabaret; a brilliant night out!

19.'The Cheshireman'-19.03.22
Having passed down the WCML the previous day on returning from London I observed a flooded field below the viaduct just to the north of Wolverton at Haversham. With the passage of 'The Cheshireman' charter the following day and with a good morning forecast I thought that this would be a great spot to capture the train.

20. East Midlands Day Ranger-23.03.22

Following on from last year's West Midlands Day Ranger trip , Andy and I undertook the East Midlands version on this lovely early spring day. We found a real lack of services and equally poor connections meaning that our plans to travel had to be curtailed and considerably modified at times. Whether this was due to the COVID induced reduction of services or just a general lack of joined-up planning we were not at all sure. Most trains ran to time apart from one crucial service that caused a significant delay on our return-to-base journey.

21. The Mancunian-26.03.22
Steam charters on the southern section of the busy WCML are a bit of a rarity now so it was great to be able to walk out from home and see 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' pass on a lovely spring morning on the weekend of the change to BST.

22. Trackwork in the cutting & 5Z50-27.03.22
Out for my Sunday constitutional, I discovered trackwork underway deep in Roade cutting. With no camera to hand I used my iPhone to record the event. Later in the afternoon, the passage of a pair of Class 50s returning stock to Burton-on-Trent following charter work the previous day was probably the highlight of the year so far near to home on the WCML!

23. Sandy with Andy-02.04.22
A bright and chilly Saturday morning found Andy and me heading to the Sandy area in order to collect a sofa using my Combo van as the method of transportation! On the way back, complete with said sofa well strapped to the roof bars, we paused just north of Sandy station on the oddly named New Zealand bridge, a favoured spot for many a railway photographer.

24. Trip to Cheltenham-05-07.04.22
To celebrate my wife's birthday we headed off for a short break in Cheltenham. I spent four years in the mid-1980s at university in this fine regency town so I was eager to re-visit a few of my old haunts! We travelled in our new super-duper electric car making it a very cheap few days away bit it was a bit of a shame that the weather did not quite play ball!

25. The London to S & C Railway, a nagex & a TPE move-09.04.22
A busy Saturday local to me on the WCML. Early in the morning, I took a relatively short drive to a classic spot just north of Linslade tunnels to see a northbound charter hauled by 86259. On my return, I paused at Bletchley to charge the car at Tesco, take breakfast and a visit to Ikea that also coincided with the northbound excursion taking racegoers to Merseyside for the Grand National. Later in the day, I popped out again to see an unusual TPE move to Wolverton Works that involved two Class 68s top and tailed.

26. An 0Z86 with a difference!-10.04.22
The usual Sunday 0Z86 light engine move following yesterday's charter duties was a little different today with a West Coast Class 47 in tow, it had to be worth a walk out from home!

27. The Norfolk Coast Express-16.04.22

With a Class 40 out on the mainline relatively near to home and a nice day forecast, it had to be worth a trip out! So after picking up Andy we headed just east of Peterborough on the former GE route to join a phalanx of other photgraphers all crowded around a lightly used crossing. Amongst those gathered were Damian LeMaistre ,  Hayden Legge  and Darren Weatherall of Mr. Deltic fame. One notable feature of those gathered were a quartet of enthusuast standing in a line with their excessively tall camera poles, it begged the conversation in my mind, 'my pole's bigger than yours!'.

28. Trip to London-20 & 21.04.22
Delayed twice by COVID so for the third time of asking my wife and I took an overnight trip to London to see the amazing Sting in concert at the London Palladium. As usual, we travelled there and back by train and enjoyed some really nice spring weather!

29. Another 5Q70 TPE move-23.04.22

Another Saturday TPE stock move from Manchester to Wolverton Works got me out from home across the fields. Unlike last time when there appeared to be plenty of spotters out to capture it, I saw nobody else today.

30. Class 68 LE move-02.05.22
With the prospect of a light engine move passing close to home I timed my Bank Holiday walk with its passage. There was a different service pattern in operation on this day with all trains terminating at and departing from Milton Keynes due to various engineering possessions and HS2 works.

31. 4 Class 47s & another TPE move-14.05.22
An early morning trip out to just north of Leighton Buzzard to capture a Statesman operated charter heading for Paignton doubled headed by a pair of Class 47s. The weather was perfect with a cool and crisp light at one of my favourite spots on the WCML. Later in the morning, a single FA Cup footex charter was also captured closer to home. Interestingly. this was also operated by Statesman Rail and was Class 47 hauled but in top and tail mode.

32. A spring morning walk & HS2 developmemts-19.05.22
An early morning walk enabled a photograph of one of the up Caledonian Sleepers services. This was followed by a raft of freights that were predominantly electric hauled. Later in the day my wife and I stopped off on our journey back from Bicester where I observed the latest HS2 developments at Newton Purcell near Finmere.

33. The Cumbrian Mountain Express-21.05.22

34. 0Z68-22.05.22
Following railtour duties yesterday I took my daily walk at lunchtime to coincide with the passage of the returning light engine. I opted for a local spot but this time decided to utilise my 80-200 zoom attached to my Canon 5D nearly breaking my shoulder in the process! Taking this camera/lens combination reminds me why I use this less than the G1X despite the latter's lens limitations.

35. Victoria to Victoria-26.05.22
A day off from work coincided with the passage of a Northern Belle charter that was running from Manchester Victoria to London Victoria (hence the title!). Unfortunately, the return train was quite late in the evening and the weather did not play ball so the photographs are of rather dubious quality!

36. Caledonian Sleeper & 5F90-28.05.22
A bright but very chilly morning got me out to see the up sleeper. Later in the day, it had clouded up but this did not deter me from nipping out to see the unusual sight of a top and tailed Class 56 working.

37. 1Z68 footex-29.05.22
Another footex heading to Wembley was definitely worth a walk out on Sunday lunchtime. This time it was carrying Huddersfield supporters to the capital for a decisive match with Nottingham Forrest to win a lucrative place in the Premiership.

38. The Royal Charter-03.06.22
As part of the Queen's jubilee activities, passengers were able to enjoy a steam-hauled out and back charter to Windsor from Crewe. As a Republican, the airing of my views on the Royal Family is probably not for this site but, nonetheless, I would like to thank her for the extra one public holiday awarded to us mere mortals! It did also mean that the increasingly rare occurrence of a steam train on the southern WCML took place led, of course by 70000 'Britannia'.

40. A summer's evening variety-14.06.22
A lovely summer's evening just a week before the longest day got me out for a walk after dinner. There were some interesting workings in the hour or so that I was out; I love this time of year!

41. A sunny afternoon in Roade cutting-20.06.22
I had some business to attend to in the morning but with a nice day forecast, I packed my camera and camping chair intending to go lineside for an hour or so on my return home. I had not intended to go to Roade cutting but it made sense and avoided an unnecessary drive bearing in mind the crazy price of fuel at the moment (currently hovering at a just under £2 per litre equating to £9 per gallon for the older ones amongst us!). Despite this, I enjoyed a couple of hours in the sun observing the trains passing me below in the cutting.

42. A right royal affair-30.06.22
Getting gen on the Royal Train is always a bit hit and miss with it not appearing on RTT (and other sites). It is usually down to somebody in the know posting something and keeping a close eye on OpenTrainTimes where it does appear once underway. This is exactly what I did on this Thursday morning enabling me to pop out and see it passing Roade heading for Scotland from its base at Wolverton.

43. GP special-03.07.22
The British Grand Prix at Silverstone has usually brought a charter or two to Northamptonshire and 2022 was no exception. There was just one this year but it made so many logistical passes through my home village of Roade that it felt like more than one operated! Off course, the Grand Prix produced its own excitement, not least being red-flagged at the first turn after the start putting it back an hour meaning that the return train ran too late for me to get out and photograph it.

44. Trip to London-10-12.07.22
A trip to London with my wife to attend an open-air concert in Hyde Park featuring the 80s icons that are Duran Duran! The following evening we attended an evening with Miriam Margolyes being interviewed by Julian Clarey. All this took place during a particularly hot few days in July with London at boiling point!

45. DRS open day & The Cheshireman-18.07.22
After a break of two years due to COVID DRS was once again able to open up their facilities to the enthusiast. This year it was the turn of Gresty Bridge at Crewe to throw open its gates. I travelled from Northampton with Mike and enjoyed a super day out in the summer sun. I had a post 13.00 entry ticket finding visitor numbers far more pleasant and manageable than in the past when I usually tended to arrive earlier in the day. Prior to heading to Crewe I nipped out from home to see the passage of the steam-hauled Cheshireman charter that was also seen later on arrival at Crewe. A super day out in convivial company!

After a break of two years due to COVID DRS was once again able to open up their facilities to the enthusiast. This year it was the turn of Gresty Bridge at Crewe to throw open its gates. I travelled from Northampton with Mike and enjoyed a super day out in the summer sun. 46. 0H72-17.07.22
I managed to combine my daily walk with the passage of an unusual Sunday light engine move. The sun also came along for the ride too!

47. 1Z39 on the UK's hottest day-19.07.22
What an extraordinary day! I took a couple of short rides out on Bertie on what was to become the hottest day ever recorded in the UK. I recorded a maximum of 39.2 degrees C at my home in Roade a little short of the 40.2 recorded at Heathrow. Riding gently on the bike was actually quite cooling until coming to a halt when the intensity of the extreme heat was fully felt! I was keen to capture the passage of a set of charter stock to and from Euston hence my forays to the lineside; needless to say there was nobody else mad enough to be out to see the train with sensible people seeking comfort in the shade of their darkened homes!

48. 5Z83 move-25.07.22
The Swift Express freight service has not seen a great deal of activity in the day on the WCML so a return run from Scotland to Euston was worth getting out to see. I took my daily walk to coincide with its passage taking a break from some hardcore home decoration!

49. A sunday of infrastructure workings-31.07.22
With the prospect of four infrastructure trains passing Roade following overnight engineering works in the Bletchley area, I had to keep my wits about me studying OpenTrainTimes regularly to keep a close eye on their progress. I managed to capture three out of four of them which was pretty good going even if one was a track machine!

50. A light engine Class 56-03.08.22
I managed to combine doing some errands in the village with the passage of a light engine that I suspected would be something interesting and I was right!

51. A lunchtime walk-05.08.22
Yet another sunny but, not quite so hot day, found me out for a lunchtime walk across the fields from home. In amongst the parade of Class 390s and 350s I recorded four freights and a light engine move in the hour or so I was linesiding.

52. The CME & a trip out on the Marston Vale line-06.08.22
With yet another fine day forecast I collected Andy and we headed to one of our favourite spots just north Leighton Buzzard to capture another Cumbrian Mountain Express. After a breakfast stop we decided to take a run out and back on the Marston Vale line between Bletchley and Bedford on one of the London Midland operated Class 230s.

53. 0Z86 again-07.08.22
With the sun still shining I walked out from home to see the 0Z86 light engine return following railtour duties yesterday. This is a regular move that sees the heritage Class 86 return to its base in Rugby's carriage sidings.

54. The hot weather just goes on & on-12.08.22
Another really hot day with the thermometer reading a healthy thirty-two degrees I took a walk out to Roade cutting to capture some freight. In the evening, after dinner, I walked across the dry and parched fields to Victoria bridge to see the late-running empty coaching stock move for the next day's North Riding and North Yorkshire Moors Railway charter from King's Cross. Whilst I really like the hot weather and days of what seem like endless sunshine the ground is really suffering and as for the water shortages; that's a whole issue in itself.

55. Wellingborough-13.08.22
Due to industrial action involving various TOCs coinciding with my wife going to London with her friend they had to travel from Wellingborough with EMR rather than the more usual journey from Northampton with London Northwestern. After dropping my wife off at the station I hung about for an hour or so in the hot sunshine.

56. 5Z64-16.08.22
I had my eye on the 5Z64 on RTT and after a short delay, I was pleased to see it on its way from Crewe. I took my morning constitutional to coincide with its passing through Roade, but gone has the hot weather of the previous few weeks with cloudy skies and spots of rain.

57. LSL's 1Z40 & 1Z41-26.08.22
LSL's second week of three running a return service train to and from Euston got me out of work to capture it passing locally near to Northampton. A couple of hours later I went out again to see it return.

58. Barrow Hill open day-27.08.22
Barrow Hill Roundhouse museum had planned a grand open day in 2020 to celebrate its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary. However, COVID put paid to their plans so two years on they threw open their doors as the 150 + 2 Celebration! There were a number of events over the three-day bank holiday event with Andy and I visiting on Saturday. We were pleased to meet up with Mike who had made his way from Wellingborough to Chesterfield by train and then a bus shuttle to Barrow Hill. It proved to be a really grand day out with a well-organised and not overcrowded event. On the way back home Andy and I paused at Toton to see what was in the yard.

59. LSL's 1Z41-02.09.22
On my way home from work for the second week on the trot I was able to stop off and capture the passage of LSL's 'Friday charter' as it passed through Northamptonshire. This week 90002 was doing the honours and very smart it looked too!

60. Oxford & Didcot without the B & H!-05.09.22
This day had the potential to be a bit of a disaster but an hour or so at Didcot salvaged it! Andy and had the intention of heading to the Berks. and Hants. line to get some stone train freight through some lovely countryside but on arrival between Westbury and Pewsey things were ominously quiet. In fact studying OpenTrainTimes revealed no train movement anywhere between Westbuy's Heywood Road Junction and Newbury. Thinking this odd I consulted GWR's Twitter feed to find a post stating that all services were either cancelled or diverted due to a signalling failure on the line near to Pewsey. So with nothing in the offing and with rain now moving in we made a quick back-up plan and headed for Didcot and found it to be very busy. We saw a lot of workings and got some reasonable photographs despite the heavy rain!

PS this was also the day that the Conservative Party elected the UK's shortest-serving Priminister in the shape of Liz Truss and the rest, as they say, is history!

61. LSL's 1Z41 for the last time?-09.09.22
Running for what should be the fourth and final time I stopped off on the way home to photograph LSL's (Locomotive Services Ltd) Friday 'charter'. However, despite being designated as this it is for all intents and purposes a scheduled train that anybody can buy a flat rate ticket for to enjoy a first-class-only journey from London to Manchester via New Street. This comes about as a result of Avanti's slashing of services due to, as they claim, staff being unwilling to work overtime. My response to this is simple, overtime is voluntary and not contracted so the answer is to plan ahead and employ more drivers if your existing ones want more time at home with their families! Avanti has been an absolute shambles and a laughing stock on the network and needs to be stripped of its franchise and the routes returned to state ownership.

62. An autumnul morning of freights & an EMR drag-13.09.22
A morning that did not quite pan out as intended but was actually reasonably successful in the end! I had wanted to get out and photograph the 1M16 sleeper but as I was walking across the fields to get to my planned spot it passed me some fifteen minutes early; this was the one day that I did not check its progress on RTT before leaving home choosing to do the washing up instead! I consoled myself with some freight photographs and a little later in the morning I went out again to see one of the regular EMR Class 360 drags.

63. More LSL charters & a steam move-16.09.22
Last Friday's LSL charter was supposed to have been the last of the four week trial but after healthy numbers using the train it has now been extended until the beginning of December. In addition, the preparations for the the funeral of the monarch have been gathering pace including the extraordinary line of mourners queuing to pass her coffin lying in state in Westminster Hall thus requiring extra capacity. I popped out on my bike a couple of times to see the passage of the train and an additional steam move that found the lead locomotive actually in full steam with no assistance.

64. LSL & WCR charters-17.09.22
On a glorious September morning, I took an early drive to Bletchley. Whilst leaving the car charging at Tesco I went to the station as there was some interesting traffic due to pass through including the morning LSL relief service again! Later in the day I went out twice more to observe the re-born locomotive hauled services locally close to home....what a day!

Another day of LSL & WCR extras-18.09.22
With the Queen's funeral just one day away and the queue to pass her coffin laying in state some five miles, long extra trains were still being hastily put on to get people to London and, just as importantly, back again. Once again I went out locally to see some of the relief services but missed some due to family commitments. I tried explaining to the lovely Mrs. On The Up Fast the significance of the services but she did seem that impressed exclaiming, 'not more trains'!

66. LSL & WCR services on the funeral day of QE2-19.09.22
Despite being designated as a Bank Holiday the day of the Queen's funeral found the railways relatively busy, at least in my part of the world. I got out to see two southbound and one northbound locomotive hauled services partially in connection with the conveyance of mourners. Once again, these were to supplement the lack of services being offered by the hapless Avanti West Coast. Indeed, one of these services was chartered by them to cover for their reduction of trains!

67. LSL's 1Z41-23.09.22

Just before dinner, I nipped out to see the passing of the Friday evening LSL 'charter'. For a change this week it had 90001 'Royal Scot' leading the train and the sun played ball that made up for the last time I tried this spot for this train!

68. The Deltic Delight-24.09.22
A Deltic out on the mainline will usually get me out and about. With 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' hauling a charter from Wolverhampton to Newcastle I decided to set the alarm extra early and drive to Staffordshire to capture it shortly after departure. Unfortunately, my plans were stymied by a lack of local knowledge (despite some Google Earth and Ordnance Survey map research) and a heard of cattle! I ended up seeing the charter but not in the best of locations but with 1Z86 not far behind the morning did improve a little!

69. An HST, a Thunderbird & a new unit-29.09.22
With a day off work and some welcome sunshine on offer, I had a quick scan of RTT to see what was passing during the day. I found three things of interest and captured them all with all running to time. Firstly, a new West Midlands Trains Class 730 was scheduled to pass on a test run, soon afterwards a Class 57 Thunderbird was due on a scheduled logistics move. Later in the afternoon, an HST move from Eastleigh to Crewe was due to pass using the WCML route rather than via the GW Banbury line.

70. A Sunday walk the day after a strike-02.10.22

The previous day (Saturday) was another one of industrial action on the railways. Things appeared to be retrunring to normal on this day, following the action, but there were some knock-on cancellations. My lunchtime walk was timed to coincide with the passage of three non-passenger services.

71. Trip to London-03 & 04.10.22
An overnight trip to London with my wife to attend the incredible ABBA Voyage concert in Stratford. One of the best concerts I have been to over the years that will leave an indelible memory inside my head!

72. The Vale of the White Horse-10.10.22
A lovely autumn day found Andy and me out in the Vale of the White Horse on the Wiltshire/Oxfordshire border travelling in my trusty Combo van for a change. Before revisiting some of the spots that I frantically frequented whilst photographing HSTs just prior to GWML electrification we went to Swindon's Steam museum which was extremely good. A smashing day out doing what we enjoy!

Just prior to heading for our holiday in Norfolk I popped out to see the Cumbrian Mountain Express pass near home. Unfortunately, it was running late that did not go down well regarding the holiday packing arrangements!

74. Holiday in Norfolk-15-21.10.22
A glorious week in Norfolk with the lovely Mrs. On The Up Fast staying as usual at Kelling adjacent to the North Norfolk Railway. Despite the forecast being pretty dire, we had a smashing week of weather with just a little rain that quickly passed. This year, I have grouped all the photographs together into one large file rather than into a series of dated folders.

75. Trip to London-02-04.11.22
A lovely short mid-week break in London with Mrs. On The Up Fast ostensively as we won pool tickets to go to a recording of the popular and satirical Friday evening current affairs show Have I Got News For You. The recording took place at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith so that was where we based ourselves. Despite the fact that some rail strikes were taking place travel to and from London was little affected and did not spoil our trip.

76. An afternoon constitutional-12.11.22
On a stunning November afternoon, I walked out from home in between jobs for a Saturday constitutional with my camera over my shoulder just in case! I was rewarded with a much sought-after reward of a Class 66 in BR blue and wearing the famous double arrow on the side...yes my first sighting of 66789!

77. A walk to Roade cutting-18.11.22
With the sun shining and me due a break in between the chores at home (on my day off from work; my wife drives me very hard!) I took a walk to Roade cutting to see what was about for an hour or so. Peak freight during the day is between 13.00 and 15.00 so I was a little disappointed to see just three non-passenger trains but I did hear two others as I was walking from home towards the line!

78. A foggy but varied hour or so close to home-29.11.22
A typical foggy and cold November day found me out for my lunchtime walk with a number of potentially interesting workings in the offing! All bar one the working ran making for an interesting collection of photographs all taken with in ninety minutes!

My daily constitutional coincided with the regular Saturday 0A68 light engine move. I would not normally make a particular effort to see this move but the internet had suggested a more interesting consist on this particular day. Unbeknown to me, it had started to gain considerable time as I arrived at my chosen spot it appeared around the curve giving me just enough time to get my camera out!

80. An extremely cold & foggy walk-11.12.22

After a particualy balmy autumn that saw me just a month ago still wearing shorts the weather has really turned! It is now extremely cold and wintery. Wrapped up appropiately I took my Sunday walk to coincide with the passage of a couple of interesting moves local to home in Roade. A little late running meant that I was out for a little longer than I had intended!

82. New Year's Eve walk-31.12.22
On a particularly dank and miserable New Year's Eve I took my traditional walk out managing just two railway photographs. Both showed clearly the (start of?) huge vegetation clearances in Roade cutting. After years of neglect finally, contractors are being brought in to cut back the rampant growth of trees above the cutting creating many potential problems during the leaf-fall season.
