A day off from work coincided with the passage of a Northern Belle charter that was running from Manchester Victoria to London Victoria (hence the title!). Unfortunately, the return train was quite late in the evening and the weather did not play ball so the photographs are of rather dubious quality!

47812 & 57314, outward leg of The Northern Belle, 07.18 Manchester Victoria-London Victoria (1Z60, 25L), Ashton Road bridge
Running some forty minutes late The Northern Belle 07.18 Manchester Victoria to London Victoria charter passes just south of Roade. The charter was supposed to have been top and tailed throughout and this was the case on leaving Manchester. However, after an undisclosed problem at Stoke-on-Trent it appears that 47812 that was on the rear was run round the train after 57314 'Conwy Castle' was failed. After leaving Stoke some forty minutes late, it had made up a good deal of time on reaching London just twenty-five minutes adrift. I must admit that photographing a double-headed train is preferable to one in top and tailed mode.

68003, 15.49 Garston Car Terminal-Dagenham Docks (6L48, 7E), site of Roade station
In very poor lighting 68003 'Astute' leads the daily 6L48 15.49 Garston to Dagenham Docks empty car transporter service. The train is seen on the up slow line passing the site of Roade station with the A508 overbridge seen to the top left. Whilst this service is normally electric hauled by a Class 88 on this occasion diesel traction was utilised and I certainly knew it hearing the locomotive for some time prior to its passing before it even entered Roade cutting some mile or so away!

47815, return leg of The Northern Belle, 18.45 London Victoria-Manchester Victoria (1Z62, 5E), site of Roade station
Was it really worth it? I took a walk (admittedly a short one!) from home after dinner to capture the returning Northern Belle charter from London Victoria to Manchester Victoria but it was a very grey and dark spring evening with spots of rain in the air. Even worse, the dark green liveried 47815 'Lost Boys 68-88' doing its best to camouflage itself had been mustered from somewhere down south to haul the return train following the failure of 57314 during the outward journey. The train is seen passing Roade the final vestiges of brightness in the evening sky seen in the background.

47812, return leg of The Northrn Belle, 18.45 London Victoria-Manchester Victoria (1Z62, 5E), site of Roade station
Having been mustered earlier in the day to haul the train following the failure of 57314 'Conwy Castle' at Stoke-on-Trent 47812 takes a rest at the rear of the returning Northern Belle charter that left London Victoria at 18.45 heading back to Manchester Victoria. The train is seen in the half-light on a particularly dismal spring evening passing Roade with the table lights of the stock clear to see!
