A typical foggy and cold November day found me out for my lunchtime walk with a number of potentially interesting workings in the offing! All bar one the working ran making for an interesting collection of photographs all taken with in ninety minutes!

66429, 10.02 Tilbury-DIRFT (4M07, 25E), Roade cutting
66429 emerges from the fog in Roade cutting leading the 4M07 10.02 Tilbury to Daventry Tesco service. After a balmy and lovely autumn that found me out and about wearing shorts just two weeks previously the weather has returned to type with a vengeance being chilly and damp.

323239, 10.52 Allerton Depot-Wolverton Centre Sidings (5Q70, 17E), Roade cutting
Northern's 323239 passes through Roade cutting on the up-slow line as the 10.52 Allerton Depot to Wolverton Works move. This was one of a number of such moves to and from the works on this day once again confirming that despite huge rationalisation over the years and various changes of ownership that it remains busy. Interestingly, I photographed the same unit on Christmas Eve last (less than a year ago) returning from Wolverton Works, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30022655995/x323239-11-46-wolverton-works-allerton

720610 & 720609,12.58 Wembley Yard-Rugby (5Q92, 11E), Hyde Road bridge
More testing times! 720610 and 720609 head north through Roade taken from the village's Hyde Road bridge as the 5Q92 12.58 Wembley Yard to Rugby mileage accumulation run. The Derby-built Bombardier Aventras have been in service in East Anglia since 2020 with the latest twelve 7206XX units heading for c2c whose livery can be seen on these units.

720609 & 720610,12.58 Wembley Yard-Rugby (5Q92, 11E), Hyde Road bridge
I don't normally do going-away photographs but when the subject is an off-piste unit such as this I will make an exception! Soon to enter service on c2c's routes in and out of Fenchurch Street serving the Thameside area of south Essex 720609 and 720610 are seen passing Roade. The pair of Aventras are undertaking a mileage accumulation run as the 5Q92 12.58 Wembley Yard to Rugby and return.

66531 & 197014, 10.35 Crewe Basford Hall-Wolverton Centre Sidings (6Q98, 32L), Hyde Road bridge
During the week I read in Rail 971 that the first Class 197s have entered service on the North Wales coast others are still being prepared for service prior to testing. Freightliner's 66531 tows 197014 sandwiched between some former HIA hoppers acting as barrier vehicles through Roade. I am not sure why the Class 197 was being taken to Wolverton Works from Basford Hall but I do know that the shunter will be busy on its arrival in order to extricate it from the barrier vehicles.

197014, 10.35 Crewe Basford Hall-Wolverton Centre Sidings (6Q98, 32L), Hyde Road bridge
A close-up of a brand new Class 197 unit wearing its unbranded TfW livery as it passes through Roade cutting taken from Hyde Road bridge. On the week that this photograph was taken the first of these Spanish-built CAF units had just entered service with TfW. This example was difficult to identify as it appeared to have no numbering either bodyside or on the front. However, a close examination of the white sheet of A4 paper sellotaped to the interior of the cab window revealed it to be 197014. Out of sight on the front Freightliner's 66531 was towing the ensemble as the 6Q98 10.35 Crewe Basford Hall to Wolverton Works.

66610, 13.20 Willesden-Tunstead Sidings (6H50, 3E), Hyde Road bridge
Festooned with stone dust and with a rust-stained front end, Freightliner's 66610 looks a bit of a mess as it passes through Roade taken from Hyde Road bridge. The Class 66 is working the 13.20 Willesden to Tunstead Sidings empty stone train running as 6H50. This is a regular operation on the WCML in association with the construction of HS2 and makes a change from the usual intermodal and box train fare!

66513, 12.16 Lawley Street-London Gateway (4L46, 4E), Hyde Road bridge
Making very slow progress as it emerges from the foggy depths of Roade cutting 66513 leads the 12.16 Lawley Street to London Gateway Freightliner. This particular service, running as 4L46, was very well loaded on this day with the last boxes yet to pass underneath me as I walked over the bridge and away towards home and this was after I had taken a few seconds to pack my camera away and pick up my shopping bag!
