47. 1Z39 on the UK's hottest day-19.07.22

What an extraordinary day! I took a couple of short rides out on Bertie on what was to become the hottest day ever recorded in the UK. I recorded a maximum of 39.2 degrees C at my home in Roade a little short of the 40.2 recorded at Heathrow. Riding gently on the bike was actually quite cooling until coming to a halt when the intensity of the extreme heat was fully felt! I was keen to capture the passage of a set of charter stock to and from Euston hence my forays to the lineside; needless to say there was nobody else mad enough to be out to see the train with sensible people seeking comfort in the shade of their darkened homes!

66418, 04.59 Trafford Park-Felixstowe North (terminated at Willesden) (4L41, 104L), Roade cutting
With the heat really building 66418 'Patriot - In Memory of Fallen Railway Employees' climbs through Roade cutting leading the very late running 4L41 04.59 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner. With the temperature already in the mid-thirties, the crew in Class 66s would really be struggling as the cabs have no air conditioning. I suspect that this would be tolerable when the train was in motion but when forced to stop would become extremely uncomfortable. This particular service was probably heat affected as it was already extremely late here at Roade usually passing about before 09.00 (with it now being 10.30) and was terminated on arrival in London at Willesden.

90002 & 47501, 19.23 Dumfries-London Euston (1Z39, 12E), Roade cutting
Making a superb sight as it passes through Roade cutting at a reduced speed imposed due to the extremely high temperatures, 90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' leads the 1Z39 19.23 Dumfries to London Euston. Despite this move being well trailed on the various internet posting sites I have been unable to find out what the nature of the train actually was; advice appreciated! The Intercity liveried Class 90 took over the train from Crewe with 47501 'Craftsman' on the rear for the duration.

390010, VT 08.43 London Euston-Preston (Cancelled from Wolverhampton) (5S54, 86L) & 350235 & 350246, LN 10.25 Northampton-London Euston (2Z24, 2L), Roade cutting
As 390010 'Cumbrian Spirit' heads north through Roade cutting working the 08.43 Euston to Preston whilst 350235 and 350246 head south with the 10.25 Northampton to Euston. The incredibly hot weather affected all trains on this day with a blanket fifty miles per hour speed restriction imposed. The Avanti West Coast train ran into trouble later in its journey arriving at Wolverhampton an hour and a half late and was promptly terminated. Meanwhile, the London Northwestern service was running as a one-off retimed train with the reporting number of 2Z94.

66509, 08.28 Crewe Basford Hall-Wolverton Centre Sidings (RT), Roade cutting
I never did discover the purpose of the 08.28 Crewe Basford Hall to Wolverton Works light engine move or even its reporting number. 66509 is seen passing through Roade cutting on the up slow line just a short distance from its destination. I hope that the crew were not too hot on arrival as the temperature outside was climbing towards its peak in the afternoon already being well over thirty degrees according to my thermometer.

66090, 06.53 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, 12L), site of Roade station
My second trip out on the hottest day ever recorded in the UK finds me at the site of Roade station. Smoking badly (actually considerably worse than in this photograph) 66090 'Maritime Intermodal Six' leads the 6M45 06.53 Dollands Moor to Daventry daily bottled water train. Now I like the heat but I have to say that the intensity on this particular afternoon was quite extraordinary with my thermometer peaking at 39.2 degrees C not long after this photograph was taken.

47501 & 90002, 12.07 London Euston-Crewe HS (5Z40, 12E), site of Roade station
Having seen this train work up to London earlier in the morning it is seen returning to Crewe as the 5Z40 12.07 ex Euston past the site of Roade's former station. D1944/47501 'Craftsman' is now leading the stock with 90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' at the rear. On the hottest day of the year (and the hottest recorded in the UK for that matter) the driver will be missing air conditioning in the cab of the Class 47, not somthing ever installed back in 1966 when it was constructed at Crewe!
