On a particularly dank and miserable New Year's Eve I took my traditional walk out managing just two railway photographs. Both showed clearly the (start of?) huge vegetation clearances in Roade cutting. After years of neglect finally, contractors are being brought in to cut back the rampant growth of trees above the cutting creating many potential problems during the leaf-fall season.

With the West Coast Mainline shut for several days over the Christmas period contractors were brought into Roade cutting to undertake some much-needed vegetation clearance. With this new view now opened up following the clearance a pair of London Northwestern Desiros pass on the up and down fast lines. 350373 leads a classmate north on the 10.46 Euston to Crewe service whilst an unidentified pair head south with the 10.13 Crewe to Euston service. This view has revealed the buttresses that are built into the side walls of the cutting providing extra support for the vast brick retaining walls.

It seems a shame that there needs to be huge bursts of activity when the railways are closed to undertake clearance of the chronically overgrown embankments; regular maintenance would surely be a better way of doing this? The scene in Roade cutting shows the result of clearance over the Christmas period on the western side of the cutting that brought an army of orange-clad contractors to the village wielding their chainsaws!
