Another day of LSL & WCR extras-18.09.22

With the Queen's funeral just one day away and the queue to pass her coffin laying in state some five miles, long extra trains were still being hastily put on to get people to London and, just as importantly, back again. Once again I went out locally to see some of the relief services but missed some due to family commitments. I tried explaining to the lovely Mrs. On The Up Fast the significance of the services but she did seem that impressed exclaiming, 'not more trains'!

390112 VT, 15.47 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A53, 7L), Blisworth
This dramatic scene was recorded at the end of an afternoon of strong sunshine and heavy showers and it looks like it's about to chuck it down again; luckily it missed me here at Blisworth in Northamptonshire! With the plough lines in the field drawing the eye towards the subject 390112 heads south with Avanti's 1A73 15.47 Liverpool to Euston service. Weather like this in September makes this particular month one of my favourites in which to take railway photographs with a lovely quality of light often found.

390151 'Unknown Soldier' passes under some threatening and dramatic-looking clouds as it passes Blisworth in Northamptonshire working Avanti's 17.51 Euston to Liverpool service. I particular;y like the shafts of sunlight finding their way through some gaps in the cloud that contrast strongly with the intense black.

I believe that the esteemed railway photographer and writer O.S. Nock once said that the one rule of railway photography was always to have the camera facing away from the sun. Well, I like breaking the rules and here is a good example and one that has just about worked! Taken against the strong setting sun that was partially obscured by cloud at Blisworth DVT 82139 catches the light as it leads the 16.02 Manchester to Euston LSL relief service operating in connection with the death of the Queen. On the rear of the fine set of Intercity Swallow liveried stock is 90002 ' Wolf of Badenoch' providing the power. It's a shame that in recording the extremely contrasty image the camera did not manage to record any colour in the sky. I could have resorted to some Photoshop jiggery-pokery but resisted the urge to keep it 'as taken.'

I deliberately chose to frame the photograph with the train slightly off-centre so as to include the rather nice tree with its leaves still in full colour to the left that just so happened to be against the lighter portion of an otherwise dark and ominous looking sky. 90012 'Wolf of Badenoch' is seen propelling the rear of the 1Z96 16.02 Manchester to Euston LSL relief service. This was a Sunday evening and was the final few hours (until 06.30 the next morning) of the Queen's lying in state in Westminster Hall. The train may well have been carrying mourners eager to join the huge overnight queue as some of the last to file past. The return service in the early evening will probably have been carrying mourners home and away from London having paid their respects.
