63. More LSL charters & a steam move-16.09.22

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2022 > 63. More LSL charters & a steam move-16.09.22

Last Friday's LSL charter was supposed to have been the last of the four week trial but after healthy numbers using the train it has now been extended until the beginning of December. In addition, the preparations for the the funeral of the monarch have been gathering pace including the extraordinary line of mourners queuing to pass her coffin lying in state in Westminster Hall thus requiring extra capacity. I popped out on my bike a couple of times to see the passage of the train and an additional steam move that found the lead locomotive actually in full steam with no assistance.

82139, 09.00 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1Z93, RT), Victoria bridge
With the morning sun having just gone round slightly too far to illuminate the side of the train at Victoria bridge DVT 82139 leads the 09.00 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston 1Z93. For mid-September it was a pleasantly warm day that found me almost missing the train as I sat in the sun and nodded off!

90002, 09.00 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1Z93, RT), Victoria bridge
A going away photgrpah of 90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' as it heads south through the Northamptonshire countryside having just passed under Victoria bridge near Roade. It is providing the power at the rear of the 1Z93 09.00 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston LSL service. Many of the passengers will have been traveling to London in order to mourn the passing of the monarch.

34046, 09.05 Crewe HS-Southall LSL (5Z47, 18L), Roade cutting
Unusually, for an empty stock move, West Country 34046 'Braunton' was operating on its own without any assistance from the trailing diesel. It is seen working hard through Roade cutting hauling the 09.05 Crewe HS to Southall LSL with D1935 (47805) ‘Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013’ at the rear. Notice that the SR locomotive is carrying the correct headcode indicating a class three (empty stock working) but that the train was given the reporting number of 5Z47 as is more common for such a train today.

D1935, 09.05 Crewe HS-Southall LSL (5Z47, 18L), Roade cutting
With the exhaust from 34046 'Braunton' filling Roade cutting it climbs away heading south leading the 5Z47 09.05 Crewe HS to Southall LSL empty stock move. Appearing to be switched off at the rear of the train D1935 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013’ appears to going along for the ride! Roger Hosking was a notable expert and writer on the history of both railway and maritime postage. He was also the father of the somewhat controversial figure of Jeremy Hosking who as a railway entrepreneur has become an important figure within the industry. However, he has also set himself up as the darling of the right-wing libertarian movement and has donated much money to various causes such as Farage's Brexit Party and to former actor Laurence Fox's Reclaim Party to support his failed bid to become London mayor in 2021.

90002, 12.33 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1Z84, 6L), Roade cutting
Having run up to London earlier in the morning, 90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' leads the returning 12.33 Euston to Manchester service running as 1Z84. The former Greater Anglia Class 90 (see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25606768404/x90002-09-30-norwich-london-liverpool) is seen leading a matching set of InterCity Swallow liveried Mk. IIIs through Roade cutting.

66421, 10.02 Tilbury-DIRFT (4M07, 2E), Roade cutting
I have various photographs of DRS' 66421 but none since it was named 'Gresty Bridge TMD' back in 2018 at the Crewe depot's open day of that year. It is seen here passing northwards through Roade cutting with the 10.02 Tilbury to Daventry 4M07 service.

319215 LN, 18.05 Northampton-London Euston (2N94, 1L), Roade hill
I have it on good authority that London Northwestern is planning to dispense with their few remaining Class 319s next Month (October 2022). They have operated a small number, that usually work in multiple, on morning and evening commuter services with many associated empty stock moves between Bletchley and Northampton with them never going further north than the latter. The rear of 319215 in its plain and unbranded livery passes Roade hill heading south with the 18.05 Northampton to Euston service.

82139, 16.21 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1Z96, 2E), Roade hill
With the evening sunshine tantalisingly close 82139 heads southwards leading the 16.21 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston LSL Avanti relief service. It's interesting to note the different shades of white applied to the side of the DVT. I am not sure if these two shades, with the second one extending the length of the Mk. III stock is the same as it was when it was applied by BR in the 1980s and 1990s or simply that a different shade of paint was found!

90002 'Wolf of Badenoch' powers the rear of the 1Z96 16.21 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston relief service past Roade hill in Northamptonshire. The sun had just managed to hide behind a stubborn cloud with the fields, Salcey Forest and the M1 windfarm all bathed in sunshine but the subject in the shade; oh. the perils of railway photography!

66128, 13.15 Trafford Park-London Gateway (4L46, 1E), Roade hill
Doing its best to pollute the landscape of rural south Northamptonshire 66128 heads south leading the 4L46 13.15 Trafford Park to London Gateway intermodal service. What a difference a few minutes make with this train in full evening sunshine but the previous one very much in the shade! This location is between the villages of Roade and Ashton taken through a gateway into a field that is the home to a large group of alpacas.
