Steam charters on the southern section of the busy WCML are a bit of a rarity now so it was great to be able to walk out from home and see 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' pass on a lovely spring morning on the weekend of the change to BST.

390128, VT 06.10 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A05, 3L), between Roade & Ashton 390128 'City of Preston' passes between the villages of Roade and Ashton working the 1A05 06.10 Manchester to Euston Avanti service. For a change this morning, I used my Canon 5D as I knew that the photograph that I had in mind for the steam charter would need a faster shutter speed than the G1X could offer. This Pendolino has been frozen using 1:4000/second with anything less meaning some motion blur would be evident. 66536, 03.25 Garston-London Gateway (4L52, 4L), between Roade & Ashton The daily 4L52 03.25 Garston to London Gateway Freightliner passes between Roade and Ashton led by 66536 on a stunning early spring morning. This particular Class 66 is not one of my most frequently photographed examples and it this is the first time that I've recorded it hauling the 4L52. 6233, outward leg of The Mancunian, 06.37 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1Z71, RT), between Roade & Ashton Back on lines that it spent its entire working life between 1938 and 1964 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' passes between Roade and Ashton on a glorious but chilly spring morning helping to create a nice clean exhaust. The Coronation is leading the 06.37 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly running as 1Z71 throughout giving passengers a rare treat to make such a journey if costing them a pretty packet as most charters seem to now! 47772 , outward leg of The Mancunian, 06.37 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1Z71, RT), between Roade & Ashton Bringing up the rear of the outward leg of The Mancunian charter from Euston to Piccadilly 47772 'Carnforth TMD' is seen wearing its dreary West Coast livery that still looks dull on such a bright spring morning! Out of sight at the front 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' made a much finer sight! Notice the droplight of the rear cab is lowered with a relief driver sitting in the seat reading his paper; I've always thought that what a pleasant way it must be to earn a crust sitting at the rear of a train watching the journey pass you by in reverse!
