60. Oxford & Didcot without the B & H!-05.09.22

This day had the potential to be a bit of a disaster but an hour or so at Didcot salvaged it! Andy and had the intention of heading to the Berks. and Hants. line to get some stone train freight through some lovely countryside but on arrival between Westbury and Pewsey things were ominously quiet. In fact studying OpenTrainTimes revealed no train movement anywhere between Westbuy's Heywood Road Junction and Newbury. Thinking this odd I consulted GWR's Twitter feed to find a post stating that all services were either cancelled or diverted due to a signalling failure on the line near to Pewsey. So with nothing in the offing and with rain now moving in we made a quick back-up plan and headed for Didcot and found it to be very busy. We saw a lot of workings and got some reasonable photographs despite the heavy rain!

PS this was also the day that the Conservative Party elected the UK's shortest-serving Priminister in the shape of Liz Truss and the rest, as they say, is history!

220023 & 220029, XC 06.39 Nottingham-Reading (1O06, RT), Tackley station
Just catching the early morning sunshine the 06.39 Nottingham to Reading CrossCountry service passes Tackley in Oxfordshire. The 1O06 train is being worked by Voyagers 220023 and 220029, something that they have been doing now for twenty years! The leading unit still wears the darker outline of the Virgin badge that was worn from their introduction until XC took over their operation from November 2007.

70011, 05.34 Crewe Basford Hall-Southampton MCT (4O14, 5L), Tackley station
Unfortunately taken the wrong side of the early morning sunshine at Tackely station 70011 passes at speed leading the 05.34 Crewe to Southampton Freightliner. The delightful quietness of Tackely village is frequently shattered by trains as they pass particularly so when a Class 70 is at the helm!

221120 & 220016, XC 07.30 Bournemouth-Manchester Piccadilly (1M30, 9L), Godstow bridge
By the time Andy and I reached Godstow bridge to the north of Oxford the clear blue skies of earlier have begun to cloud up. On the re-laid down relief line 221120 and 220016 work northwards on CrossCountry's 07.30 Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly service. The last time I visited this spot was back on a summer's day in 2018 with the new line yet to be commissioned, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/23960748404/x800019-1p43-godstow-bridge The growth of the vegetation between the lines will soon become a problem at this location!

800011, GW 08.50 London Paddington-Great Malvern (cancelled from Worcester Foregate Street, 1W17, 45L), Godstow bridge
Was the slow speed of the 08.50 Paddington to Great Malvern passing Gostow bridge north of Oxford a portent of things to come on its journey ahead? Its progress along the Cotswold line did not get any better to the point when it arrived in Worcester some forty-five minutes late it was promptly cancelled. I don't think that there was a problem with IET 800011 as we saw it later in the day heading back towards London.

387151 & 387155, GW 12.27 London Paddington-Didcot Parkway (2N32, 1E), Didcot Parkway station
GWR's 387151 arrives at Didcot station with the 12.27 from London Paddington. Since the cancellation of the electrification northwards from Didcot passengers along the route from London have to put up with a change of trains at Didcot station to complete their journey o a rickety old second-generation DMU; a ridiculous retrograde step. Passengers can still travel direct from London, with a stop at Reading on a bi-mode IET but these trains pass Dictot on the avoiding line.

165121, GW 14.04 Didcot Parkway-Banbury (2M38, 3L) & 66418, 10.59 Lawley Street-Southampton MCT (4O03, 4E), Didcot Parkway station
Connecting with the 13.49 arrival from Paddington the 14.04 to Banbury GWR service waits to depart from Didcot. With the doors open the passenger standing on the platform seems reluctant to board the train seemingly more interested in the passing of the 4O03 Freightliner on the relief line. Unfortunately, Mike, who has access to TOPS via Freightmaster, was unable to identify the locomotive hauling the freight but by chance, a week after our visit, Mark Pye placed his Oxford spotting log from this day on the forums so I can state that the locomotive is 66418 'Patriot - In Memory of Fallen Railway Employees'.

66565, 11.10 West Drayton Frays Sidings-Machen Quarry (6Z86, 14L), Didcot Parkway station
With the rain coming down now Andy (standing just behind me) and I have had to venture out from the shelter of the canopies at Didcot to take this photograph! Having come to halt for a crew change 66565 gets away leading the 6Z86 11.10 West Drayton Frays sidings to Machen quarry empty stone train. With the construction of HS2 in full swing, the number of stone trains heading for the capital from all directions has grown significantly including to and from places such as Machen just to the east of Caerphilly.

66070, running round, Didcot Parkway station
This one is a bit of a mystery! 66070 unexpectedly appeared from the Oxford direction and stopped at Didcot's platform five. After coming to a halt the driver can be seen exiting the cab with him then changing ends and driving the train back out of the station to the north again. With no TOPS report from Mike on this day, I have no idea as to what this manoeuvre was associated with unless anybody can advise.

802101, GW 14.02 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C17, 1L), Didcot Parkway station
In pouring rain GWR IET 801101 'Nancy Astor' leaves Didcot Parkway station working the 14.02 Paddington to Bristo, Temple Meads service. A 'going-away shot' has had to suffice due to a camera (or operator?) failure as the train was arriving a short time earlier. I am putting this down to the rain but it was probably more to do with my finger not pressing the shutter release button in time!

70014, 12.24 Southampton MCT-Trafford Park (4M61, 2E), Didcot station
A light pan. photograph (taken at 1/320th sec) shows 70014 leading the 12.24 Southampton to Trafford Park Freightliner passing Didcot on the avoiding line. The Class 70s will never win any prizes in the locomotive beauty parade (from any particular angle!) but they have proved to be, after the inevitable teething problems, to be reliable and competent in operation. I always make a point of photographing them when on my railway travels as they rarely put in appearances close to home on the WCML.

387149 & 387167, GW 13.27 London Paddington-Didcot Parkway (2N36, 2L), Didcot Parkway station
With the rain having stopped and with the sky beginning to brighten slightly GWR's 387149 and 387167 arrive at Didcot Parkway. On arrival, they will terminate having worked the 2N36 in from Paddington. Unlike most of these regular services that simply sit at the platform for a short time before returning to the capital this one moved off from the station to the west where it remained for a short thus releasing the platform road for other services.

66621, 12.28 Hayes Yard-East Usk Yard (6B11, 9L), Didcot Parkway station
With the Elcotrostar that had arrived at Didcot from London and terminated a few minutes previously and then cleared the platform heading off into a siding 66621 was able to pass through at line speed leading the 12.28 Hayes Yard to East Usk Yard empty stone train. Unfortunately, the signallers had other ideas with the train being put into the up (but bi-directional) loop to the west. It was held here for some time before continuing its journey to South Wales.

66616, 13.23 Wembley Reception-East Usk Yard (6V18, 15L), Didcot Parkway station
Unusually the 13.23 Wembley Yard to East Usk Yard empty stone working was pathed on the down fast line through Didcot and beyond. 66616 was working well hauling the 6V18 keeping up to its permitted speed and was about to pass the looped 6B11 (also heading for East Usk Yard) to the west of the station. I did not follow the progress of 6V18 so I am not sure how long it remained on the fast line but hopefully for fare-paying passengers not for enough time to hold up GWR IETs breathing down its tail light!

70803, 13.27 Eastleigh East Yard-Hinksey Yard (6X27, 3L), Didcot Parkway station
With the rain having passed over and the sun out again 70803 drifts slowly into Didcot Parkway station leading the 6X27 13.27 Eastleigh East Yard to Hinksey Yard infrastructure train. The train crept to a halt with a very unhurried crew change taking place. Looking at this image and one taken slightly further along the platform half an hour earlier (https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30031743883/x387149-387167-13-27-london-paddington) the difference that a bit of sun makes is remarkable!

802105, GW 15.02 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C19, 2L), Didcot Parkway station
After a period of heavy rain, the platforms are beginning to dry out at Didcot Parkway station. 802105 arrives on platform one working the 15.02 Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads service with Didcot being the second stop after Reading. The 1C19 would also stop at Swindon, Chippenham and Bath Spa before arriving at Bristol some ninety minutes after it departed from London.
