10. An hour at Kingsthorpe-11.02.22

Working half a day at work and with a good forecast, I took my camera with me. After work, I took the long route home via a stop for an hour at a chilly Kingsthorpe that coincided with the lunchtime cluster of freights.

90010 & 90008, 09.12 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (4M63, RT), Wilson's crossing
I am of the firm opinion that the corporate Genesee & Wyoming livery applied to Freightliner operated Class 90s is absolutely superb! Passing Kingsthorpe to the north of Northampton 90010 leads 90008 working the 4M63 09.12 Felixstowe to Trafford Park service. The boxes visible on the train are all that was being carried bare two mini boxes at the rear a ridiculously easy load for the combined ten thousand horsepower available! Interestingly, I have a photograph of the same two Class 90s in a different working phase of their life at Norwich, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29952518804/x90008-11-30-norwich-london-liverpool

66432, 10.03 Tilbury-DIRFT (4M07, 19E), Wilson's crossing
DRS' 66432 climbs away from Northampton past Wilson's crossing with the very lightly loaded 4M07 10.03 Tilbury to Daventry (DIRFT) Tesco Express. Despite the large areas of blue sky above the train a huge mass of black cloud was being blown in from the northwest behind me that had obliterated the sun that had been out virtually all the day up until now when I was stuck at work off course!

88002, 13.51 DIRFT-Tilbury (4L48, 2E), Wilson's crossing
With the sun now firmly hidden by some unexpected cloud blowing in from the northwest 88002 'Prometheus' approaches Northampton at Wilson's crossing with the daily 4L48 Daventry to Tilbury Tesco Express. This service appears to be electrically hauled pretty much every day since the New Year that makes sense given that it runs under the wires for all of its journey. Following the complete clearance of the land to the left of the track a few years ago, it appears that this coming summer may be the last chance to take photographs at this spot of up trains before it takes over unless it is cleared again.

Class 350s, LN 14.38 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y67, 4L), Kingsthorpe SP737635
With the houses of Kingsthorpe in the background to the north of Northampton a pair of London Midland Desiros head north working the 2Y67 14.38 Northampton to Birmingham service. The five-arch viaduct carries the line over Kingsthorpe Brook that is a tributary of the River Nene (pronounced locally as Nen) that it joins in the middle of Northampton between the Carlsberg brewery and B&Q!

66199, 14.47 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6M45, 1E), Kingsthorpe SP737635
In line with other Freightliner and intermodal trains, the daily 6M45 empty Ferrywaggon train from Daventry to Dollands Moor is also operating at a much-reduced capacity. This train is usually very long and makes a right racket due to the resonance of the empty wagons when compared to its balancing loaded service. 66199 leads the train on the approach to Northampton passing Kingsthorpe. The land to the left is under threat of development to become a huge housing area, at least this is the plan following lengthy and protracted discussions over the last few years. So much so that the soil in the field has not been cultivated for a number of seasons now in anticipation of the work commencing!

66522, 09.14 Southampton MCT-Garston (4M58, 38E), Kingsthorpe SP737635
As the sun puts in a welcome but half-hearted appearance on this very cold and windy afternoon 66522 climbs away from Northampton crossing Kingsthorpe Brook leading the ridiculously lightly loaded 4M58 09.14 Southampton to Garston Freightliner service. In fact, seven articulated lorries could have carried the entire contents of this train up the A34, the M40 and the M6 such was the dearth of boxes on-board! Above the train, having just taken off from nearby Sywell Aerodrome, is a charter operated Agusta-Westland AW169 helicopter with the call sign G-GETU that was making the relatively short trip to Bedford.
