31. 4 Class 47s & another TPE move-14.05.22

An early morning trip out to just north of Leighton Buzzard to capture a Statesman operated charter heading for Paignton doubled headed by a pair of Class 47s. The weather was perfect with a cool and crisp light at one of my favourite spots on the WCML. Later in the morning, a single FA Cup footex charter was also captured closer to home. Interestingly. this was also operated by Statesman Rail and was Class 47 hauled but in top and tail mode.

92020, CS 20.45 Inverness & 19.50 Fort William-London Euston (1M16, 4E), Old Linslade
With the early morning mist and fog clearing 92020 'Billy Sterling' makes a fine sight as it sweeps around the steeply cambered curve at Old Linslade just north of Leighton Buzzard. It is hauling the 1M16 'Highland' sleeper now into the final half an hour of its journey from Scotland. 92002 was named during the COP26 conference in November 2021 and is another case in point of how GBRf look after their locomotives looking clean and smart.

350128, LN 06.24 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (2Y47, 1L), Old Linslade
A little side-lit but with lighting such as this it does not matter too much! 350128 leads another Desiro pass Old Linslade working the 2Y47 06.24 London Euston to Birmingham New Street service. The bright yellow flowers of the gorse (ulex) and broom (cytisus scoparius) brighten up the scene signifying that this photograph was firmly taken in the spring!

350408, LN 07.09 Bletchley-London Euston (2B06, 1E), Old Linslade
One of TPE's former Desiro sets, 350408, leads the 07.09 Bletchley to Euston London Northwestern service. The train is seen on the down slow line on the approach to Leighton Buzzard at Old Linslade, a favourite spot within the railway photography fraternity!

90015 & 90006, 02.57 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 54E), Old Linslade
The low angle used to take this photograph at Old Linslade makes for an interesting composition of 90015 and 90006 'Modern Railways Magazine' as they head north leading the 4M45 02.57 Felixstowe North to Garston Freightliner. The Genesee & Wyoming livery looks very smart as applied to these former Greater Anglia Class 90s that were acquired by Freightliner during 2020. It must be remembered that these locomotives used to operate on this route back in BR and Virgin days but then they would normally have been on the adjacent fast lines and hauling Mk. III coaching stock!

377201, SN 07.13 Milton Keynes Central-East Croydon (2O19, RT), Old Linslade
Southern Electrostar 377201 heads past Old Linslade between Bletchley and Leighton Buzzard working the 07.13 Milton Keynes to East Croydon Southern service. When wishing to cross the capital or visit West London my wife and I use these Southern services finding them perfect as they stop at places such as Kensington Olympia but as they do not run back to Milton Keynes on Sundays return journeys usually require an inconvenient change of trains at Watford Junction.

47614 & D1944, outward leg of English Riviera Statesman, 06.34 Rugby-Paignton (1Z42, 20E), Old Linslade
I deliberately went for this rather less than traditional framing of The English Riviera Statesman charter at Old Linslade to include the gorse (ulex) bush in full flower to the left of the scene. It has largely worked but for the fact that the train was double-headed rather than in top and tail mode as I had gambled! Running as 1Z42 the charter left Rugby at 06.34 and was heading for Paignton led by 47614 and D1944 (47501) 'Craftsman' giving passengers a few hours on the English Riviera before heading for home again. Fortunately for them, the charter arrived some twenty minutes early giving them a little more time to enjoy the spring sunshine.

68029, 09.32 Longsight TMD-Wolverton Centre Siding (5Q70, 12L), Roade cutting
A spot that I have been meaning to try for a number of weeks is in Roade cutting where contractors have cleared the embankments in preparation for the installation of a bridge that will carry Roade's much-anticipated bypass. The bridge will pass over exactly where I am standing thus spoiling the views from other vantage points within the cutting! Unfortunately, the sun has not come round enough to illuminate the Nova 3 set as it passes through the cutting as the 5Q70 09.32 Longsight to Wolverton Works empty stock move with 68029 'Courageous' at the rear.

68029, 09.32 Longsight TMD-Wolverton Centre Siding (5Q70, 12L), Roade cutting
68029 'Courageous' powers the rear of the 5Q70 09.32 Longsight to Wolverton Works stock move. The train is seen passing through Roade cutting from a new position opened up by contractors following clearance associated with the construction of the village's bypass. A new bridge will span the cutting at this point carrying the A508 road around the village. Allegedly, the bridge will be put into position over Christmas 2022; we'll see!

221104 & 221114, VT 06.52 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (9M50, 26L), Roade cutting
Due to the failure of a Class 390 Pendolino (390040, 1B48, 09.10 Birmingham New Street-London Euston), a short distance away the up fast line was blocked at Blisworth necessitating all up services to be diverted via Northampton. 221104 and 221114 accelerate on the up-grade through Roade cutting working the 06.52 Edinburgh to Euston service. I could not imagine a much worse way to travel from Scotland to London than on a Voyager especially when a lengthy diversion added to the journey time!

66221, 06.37 Dollands Moor-DIRFT (6M45, RT), Roade cutting
Back to its more normal length the 6M45 'bottled water train' passes through Roade cutting led, on this Saturday afternoon, by former EWS liveried 66221. This was one of my very first Class 66s photographed back in 2000 passing through Pitlochry on a southbound Freightliner.

68015, 09.32 Wembley Yard-Crewe Gresty Bridge (0K68, 62E), Roade cutting
68015 'Kev Helmer' runs light engine through Roade cutting as the 0K68 0932 Wembley Yard to Crewe Gresty Bridge move. This is a regular Saturday morning turn with the Chiltern branded (but DRS owned) locomotive returning to Crewe for maintenance and an exam. A balancing working heads in the other direction on the same day.

D1935 & D1924, 10.10 Liverpool Lime Street-Wembley Central (1Z86, 6L), Roade cutting
D1935 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013' leads D1924 'Peter Bath MBE 1927-2006' through Roade cutting with a smart set of Statesman stock sandwiched between the two locomotives. The train was in association with the 2022 FA Cup Final carrying Liverpool fans from Merseyside to Wembly running as the 1Z86 10.10 Lime Street to Wembley Central. Ultimately, after extra time and nailbiting penalties, Liverpool was to win the game beating Chelsea.

D1924 & D1935, 10.10 Liverpool Lime Street-Wembley Central (1Z86, 6L), Roade cutting
With D1924 'Peter Bath MBE 1927-2006' doing all of the work at the front of the train D1935 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013' goes along for a free ride at the rear. The train was running as 1Z86 taking Liverpool fans to Wembley for the 2022 FA Cup Final that was to be a scintillating match that saw Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties with Greek international Konstantinos Tsimikas scoring the decisive winner (much to the delight of my Greek friend and railway associate Andy!). In years past there would have been a procession of footex services on Cup Final day with scratch sets of stock cobbled together and some unusual visiting locomotives leading the trains causing a stir within the spotter fraternity of the day!
