As part of the Queen's jubilee activities, passengers were able to enjoy a steam-hauled out and back charter to Windsor from Crewe. As a Republican, the airing of my views on the Royal Family is probably not for this site but, nonetheless, I would like to thank her for the extra one public holiday awarded to us mere mortals! It did also mean that the increasingly rare occurrence of a steam train on the southern WCML took place led, of course by 70000 'Britannia'.

70000, outward leg of The Royal Charter, 07.18 Crewe-Windsor & Eton Riverside (1Z70, 5E), Roade cutting
70000 'Britannia' makes a fine sight as it climbs through Roade cutting having left Northampton some five minutes earlier. It is leading a set Saphos Train stock that left Crewe at 07.18 and was heading for Windsor and Eton Riverside station. Named the Royal Charter the train was running as 1Z70 in a nod number of years that Queen Elizabeth II had been on the throne. I chose this location as it was essentially a cloudy morning but just prior to the train's arrival the sun came out putting this side of the subject in shadow, however, with a bit of Photoshop tweaking a reasonable image has resulted.

68028 'Lord President' passes through Roade under Hyde Road bridge. I had been monitoring activity on OTT around Wolverton as there was a returning run from there to Longsight booked but all too often this does not actually run. However, whilst walking back from seeing 70000 'Britannia' the lights went green and it was off and running. Hoping for a TPE NOVA3 set I was somewhat disappointed to see a light engine so quickly had to re-compose the photograph.

70000, return leg of The Royal Charter, 18.13 Windsor & Eton Riverside-Crewe (1Z70, 3L), Roade Hill
In the half-light of a summer's evening 70000 'Britannia' returns north along the WCML leading the 1Z70 Royal Charter. The train had left Windsor and Eton Riverside at 18.13 returning to Crewe. The setting sun was tantalisingly close to illuminating this view between the villages of Roade and Ashton with a stubborn veil of cloud obscuring it!

D1924 (47810), return leg of The Royal Charter, 18.13 Windsor & Eton Riverside-Crewe (1Z70, 3L), Roade Hill
Dead in tow at the rear of The Royal Charter D1924 'Crewe Diesel Depot' is seen in the very poor half-light on a dull early summer's evening. Running as 1Z70 the train left Windsor & Eton Riverside at 18.13 returning to Crewe with 70000 'Britannia' leading the train throughout in both directions. Now painted in a reproduction British Railways green livery, D1924 was formally numbered 47810 and wore a DRS paint scheme, for example, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30014430469/x47810-northern-belle-07-07-liverpool
