With a Class 40 out on the mainline relatively near to home and a nice day forecast, it had to be worth a trip out! So after picking up Andy we headed just east of Peterborough on the former GE route to join a phalanx of other photgraphers all crowded around a lightly used crossing. Amongst those gathered were Damian LeMaistreHayden Legge and Darren Weatherall of Mr. Deltic fame. One notable feature of those gathered were a quartet of enthusuast standing in a line with their excessively tall camera poles, it begged the conversation in my mind, 'my pole's bigger than yours!'.

755408, GA 09.50 Peterborough-Ipswich (2L71, 1E), Harts Drove crossing TL273962
The new face of Greater Anglia passes across the fens at Whittlesey just to the east of Peterborough. A FLIRT family unit in the form of 755408 works the 2L71 09.50 Peterborough to Ipswich train in glorious lighting with the sun, for once, in the right place!

A little side-lit but I like this study as it includes a semaphore! 158856 works the 08.54 Norwich to Liverpool train past Wittlesey's Harts Drove crossing. This is one of the few of these EMT cross country services that works through rather than stopping and connecting at Nottingham, very much seen as a retrograde step. By this stage, a number of photographers had gathered at this well-known spot for the main feature coming along soon!

Seen and photographed by me all over the network from South Wales to Derby, Leicester, and now over in the Fens CrossCountry's 170107 works the 07.05 Gloucester to Stansted Airport service past Whittlesey. Notice the tall chimneys of the Forterra brickworks located a short distance away at King's Dyke.

170102, XC 10.00 Cambridge-Birmingham New Street (1N49, RT), Harts Drove crossing TL273962
Whittlesey station (or Whittlesea as the station is named) is just in the distance of this photograph where the starter signal can just be seen. It's a split platform with a large mechanical signal box located at the far eastern end at the level crossing where there is also a modern but rather small crossing box. The 10.00 Cambridge to Birmingham New Street service, worked by 170102, has not stopped at the station and is seen passing the home signal at the village's Harts Drove crossing, a user worked example where the drivers of vehicles have to contact the signalman for permission to cross.

158774, EM 09.39 Nottingham-Norwich (1L06, 1L), Harts Drove crossing TL273962
The revised purple and white livery that has been applied to some of East Midlands' stock looks very smart and brings another refresh to the Class 158s that are now getting on a bit approaching their twenty-fifth year! 158774 approaches Whittlesey working the 09.39 Nottingham to Norwich train.

D213, outward leg of The Norfolk Coast Express, 06.19 Manchester Piccadilly-Great Yarmouth (1Z75 4L), Harts Drove crossing TL273962
Looking absolutely superb in the bright spring sunshine D213 'Andania' leads The North Norfolk Express charter past Harts Drove lane near the Fenland village of Whittlesey. The charter left Manchester at 06.19 taking an interesting route via the Hope Valley led all the way by the Class Forty Appeal's locomotive. Wearing its British Railways green livery it does not quite match the InterCity Executive livery of the stock but it would be churlish to complain about the lack of matching stock and locomotive!

Passing Harts Drove level crossing just west of Whittlesey 47593 'Galloway Princess' looks magnificent in its large logo BR blue livery complete with Scottie dog vinyl under the nameplate. It is bringing up the rear of the 1Z75 Norfolk Coast Express charter that had left Manchester at 06.19 heading for an afternoon by the seaside at Great Yarmouth.
