With the sun still shining I walked out from home to see the 0Z86 light engine return following railtour duties yesterday. This is a regular move that sees the heritage Class 86 return to its base in Rugby's carriage sidings.

390148 'Flying Scouseman' passes through Roade cutting working the 12.28 Euston to Glasgow Central Avanti service. This classic location on the WCML has not really changed a great deal since the wires were erected in the early 1960s, apart from the rampant vegetation growth, but the reverse angle to this one is about to look radically different with the construction of a new bridge that will carry Roade's much-awaited and much-needed bypass.

This time on the down slow taking it via Northampton 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' passes through Roade cutting as the 0Z86 12.04 London Euston to Rugby carriage sidings. This light engine move follows from it hauling the Cumbrian Mountain Express yesterday the headboard from which still adorns the front of the locomotive. As E3137, 86045 and latterly 86259 I wonder how many times it passed this spot from its introduction to service in 1966 until withdrawal prior to restoration in 2003?

Having taken the previous photograph I would not normally take a reverse angle version of the same light engine. However, I wanted to include the latest progress towards the installation of the new bridge that will carry Roade's bypass. The construction of the pier on the eastern side has begun but I have still yet to see the design for the finished bridge so have concerns as to how it will look and fit into this spot that is both, after all, a Transport Heritage Site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
