A relatively leisurely start found Andy and me heading to March in his ever-trusty Nissan Micra. Here we followed the route of the former GN & GE Joint route to Spalding that closed back in 1982. We discovered considerable pieces of infrastructure still in place including most of the signal boxes. It was sobering for me that I visited the line with Graham forty-two years previously almost to the day during its final full year of operation; where has that time gone? In the evening, after a most agreeable curry in Peterborough, Andy and I headed to the station for an hour or so before returning to our hotel.

Former good shed, Twenty Feet River
Twenty Feet River is a large drainage channel that runs around the northern edge of the Fenland town of March. After leaving Whitemoor Yard the former GN & GE Joint line that once linked March with Spalding crossed Twenty Feet River with a level crossing immediately beyond the bridge. There was a crossing keeper's house but no station which made the construction of a substantial goods shed unusual. Today the goods shed is firmly secured and is adjacent to the well patronised footpath that follows the trackbed from here to Guyhirn which can be seen to the left.

Home bracket signal, Twenty Feet River crossing
A seemingly insignificant bracket signal at Twenty Feet River just to the north of March on the former GN & GE Joint line. It once had two home signals that permitted trains to pass southwards over the road just visible on a level crossing. The arm still in place was for the up main that trains would follow straight through and into March whilst the doll with the missing arm would have controlled access into the massive Whitemoor Yard once the largest marshalling Yard in Europe. The signal is withing the boundary of the former level crossing keeper's house to the left now a private residence.

Site of Twenty Feet River signal box
I stood in a very similar spot in the summer of 1981looking in the same direction towards March's vast Whitemoor Yard. Then the original bridge spanned Twenty Feet River carrying the double track GN & GE Joint line between March and Spalding that was to close a year later. In the centre distance was Twenty Feet River signal box sitting on the embankment. It was a modern box opened in 1974 replacing the older GE Twenty Feet Siding box that was collapsing into the fenland soil. The newer box only had a working life of eight years being closed when the Joint line was shut in 1982. It did stand boarded up for several years after closure looking particularly sad in a pretty desolate Fenland landscape!

Former Murrow West signal box (LNER, 1950)
For such a small and remote village deep in the Fens between Peterborough and Wisbech Murrow has a fascinating railway history. There were once two railways operated by different companies, two stations and a rare flat crossing. The GN & GE line ran between March and Spalding once being a busy freight route with a local passenger service also offered an alternative route for diverted express services, particularly during the summer months. The single track M & GN line crossed the GN & GE to the west of the village with a station located on the latter's line of the same name. Murrow East was located more conveniently for the village but was the first to close. This British Railways built (to an LNER design) box opened in 1950 at the site of the flat crossing replacing a much earlier box that was destroyed in an accident on the crossing. I last visited the box back in 1981 when it was still in use see... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30046908470/murrow-west-signal-box-lner, today it is a much extended private house as seen here.

Former Murrow West signal box (LNER, 1950)
Looking more akin to a seaside residence the former 1950-built signal box at Murrow West is seen from the rear. The former GN & GE Joint line (that was shut in 1982) ran in front of the box between it and the trees. The also closed M & GN single-track route from Peterborough to Wisbech ran to the right of the box (in this view) crossing the GN & GE line on a flat crossing. This flat crossing was the site of a dramatic crash in the cold wartime winter of 1941 when two freights collided caused by frozen points. The derailing wagons demolished the old signal box located diagonally opposite the replacement structure seen here. Luckily, the signalman on duty survived allegedly (according to local legend) reporting to the accident inspector that he 'fancied a dollop of pickle in his sandwich' that he was eating at the time of impact. One of the crashed trains was conveying Branston pickle! I last visited the box in 1981 on my summer tour with Graham and stood in a very similar position to take this photograph, see....https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30046908474/murrow-west-signal-box-lner

Former Horsemoor signal box, at Murrow West (GE, 1899)
I last photographed this signal box at its original location to the East of March where the B1099 crosses the Ely line back in the summer of 1981, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30046908461/horsemoor-signal-box-great-eastern. Horsemoor box is a Great Eastern Type 7 design dating from 1899 distinguished by the roofed landing and the single horizontal crossbar glazing to the front windows. It was closed in the autumn of 1988 and was bought and moved to this site in a reclaim yard at Murrow West situated now on the Peterborough side of the M & GN line that crossed the GN & GR Joint line just behind where I am standing. On balance, the large Peterborough North enamel attached to the front is probably the original sign from that box that was closed in 1972. However, I have struggled to find any contemporary photographs of that box sporting the sign so its providence cannot be assured.

Home bracket signal, Murrow West
When I visited Murrow West back in 1981 I have it noted in my book that I saw a disused bracket signal to the west of Murrow signal box but that it had no arms. The arms have now been added by the owner of the reclaim yard in which the bracket is sited. The home and distant doll controlled the M & GN single-track route from Peterborough (behind me) to Wisbech that crossed the GN & GR Joint line on a flat crossing just beyond the former railway cottage on the left. The single home permitted trains to pass from the M & GN south on to the GN & GR route via short and tight spur. This was added late in 1961 to permit bricks to be taken by rail from the Eye and Dogsthorpe brickworks for onward transportation from Whitemoor Yard following the closure of the rest of the Peterborough to Wisbech line. This operation did not last long with the complete closure of the M & GN rote coming in 1966.

Gate post, Murrow West
This lone cast iron gate post looks lost amongst the uncut grass and general detritus at Murrow West. I suspect that it was once associated with the station that closed on 06.07.53 as it was located directly behind it close to the trees and the old containers. The group of lads who turned up to sort through the wood did not seem to understand why I was taking a photograph of this post and I did not explain as I suspect that it would be lost on them!

Former French Drove signal box (GN, 1882)
When I last visited this spot over forty years previously French Drove signal box was in an open and exposed position on the Fens now it is surrounded on all sides by trees but mercifully it still stands and is in use as a private residence. The 1882 Great Northern box controlled the level crossing as well as being a block post between Murrow West and Postland. It also controlled and up and down loop to the north of the crossing. I am not sure why the loops were installed on the former GN & GE Joint line in this remote area but perhaps they were installed during the war years when traffic increased dramatically in this area, advice anybody?

Former French Drove & Gedney Hill station (Closed 11.09.61)
When I visited French Drove and Gedeny Hill station back in 1981 twenty years after it had closed it was seemingly empty and derelict. The GN & GE Joint line on which it was located was to close within a year of me taking the photograph back then but the station building lived on as can be seen here. It is now in use as a business and possibly a private residence.

Former French Drove signal box (GN, 1882) & site of level crossing
When last on the market French Drove signal box sold for an astounding £300,000 but it does come with a large area of former railway land. It is barely visible in this view taken from the former level crossing with the scene being completely open when I last visited over forty years ago, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30046908481/french-drove-signal-box-gn-great! Behind the box, partially occupying former railway land where the up loop and mainline once ran is the Rosebay naturist campsite. I suspect that the rampant tree growth comes in handy with them!

Postland station (Closed 11.09.61)
The rear of the former Postland station is seen located where the B1166 road crosses the former GN & GE Joint line between March and Spalding. The station closed, along with all others on the line apart from the already shut Murrow West on 11.09.61. The loss of local passenger services on the route was another advanced nail in its coffin with all through services, passenger and freight, withdrawn in 1982 when the line was finally shut. A relatively short stretch of line linking March and Spalding that today would have been an excellent freight route taking traffic off the busy ECML but hindsight is a marvellous thing!

With ivy slowly enveloping Postland signal box it is fast disappearing from view from this end at least! The box was shut in 1982 when the former GN & GE Joint line from March to Spalding was finally closed. It is remarkable that it still survives in its original state but its condition is decidedly parlous!

Postland station (Closed 11.09.61)
Portland station closed to passengers on 11.09.61 with the tracks between the platforms becoming disused in 1982 when the former GN & GE Joint line between March and Spalding was shut by BR with them sighting worn out infrastructure and having no money to reinvest in the line as the reasons for closure. Thankfully, the station is still extant and in use as a private residence complete with the up platform in place. I stood on the down platform to the left of this view back in 1981 facing the opposite way to capture the superb Great Eastern box and manual crossing gates.

When I last photographed Postland signal box on 16.08.81 it was in superb condition looking like it had just been in receipt of a paint. Just over forty years later it is still standing (just!) but in need of a little more than a repaint now! The box last signalled a train on the former GN & GE Joint line in 1982 and really needs somebody to take it on now before it is too late but what a project! Notice Andy's trusty Nissan Micra, our steed for many trips, parked near the entrance gate of Fenland Tractors.

NB just a fortnight later the Micra failed its MoT in spectacular fashion needing a huge amount of welding to keep it on the road. Andy took the plunge and had the work done!

A view of the rear of the former Great Northern Postalnd signal box dating from 1882. It remains in a dreadful state looking as if the roof will collapse at any time with the brickwork not far behind. It is really in desperate need of somebody taking it on and dismantling it brick by brick to then rebuild it in all its original glory. Is that brave person out there I wonder? Notice the 1967 Caterpillar D6C 82A Agricultural Crawler for sale in the yard of Fenland Tractors, I wonder if they might be able to restore the box?

The main building is of a typical Great Eastern design that the present owner has maintained complete with period signs and posters. The rather grand former Cowbit goods shed still stands on what would have been former railway land. The twin track GN & GE Joint line ran to the left of the building in this photograph where the building work is taking place. I hope that the goods shed can be put to further use. It would make a really intesting house or local business conversion.

Interior, former goods shed, Cowbit
The interior of Cowbit goods shed is impressive, particularly the substantial roof structure. When in use the shed would have handled local goods both in and out for Cowbit and the surrounding area in an era when things were so different than today. I cannot help but think that such a superb and intact structure is crying out to be repurposed. The building of houses adjacent to it on the former trackbed suggests that things may be happening soon.

Travelling south on the line ended up at March whilst behind me it Spalding was only a few miles away. If the line had not been closed in 1982 by BR just consider what a significant route it would now be for freight to and from the East Coast ports as well as passenger diversions.

The former station building that was closed on 11.09.61 is now converted into a private residence and a business. The old station waiting shelter on the up platform had been extended and turned into a dog grooming business. The new picket fence to the centre on Stonegate marks the spot of the level crossing. The last services ran, apart from the breakdown trains, through Cowbit in November 1982.

Former GN & GE River Welland bridge, Spalding
Entering Spalding from the southwest the former GN & GE Joint line crossed the River Welland on this bridge. As roads run along both banks of the river this meant two level crossings at either end of the bridge that would have made for an interesting operation. Welland Bridge signal box was at the end nearest the camera on Cowbitt Road and would have controlled the set of gates on this side of the river. I am not too sure as to how the gates on the other side, London Road, were operated, perhaps there was a crossing keeper and associated hut...local advice anybody? Unfortunately, when Graham and I visited in the summer of 1981 we missed this bridge, the box and its associated signalling.

Whilst the railway heritage of the bridge over the River Welland in Spalding is clear to see I suspect that to locals who cross on the pedestrian section of the bridge don't even give a second thought. The tracks sat between steel sections seen here with level crossing gates at either end of the bridge. A photograph on Flikr is taken from an almost identical position and angle to the one I took here, see... https://www.flickr.com/photos/28083135@N06/49009212021 It is sobering to think that, apart from breakdown trains, the last train to rattle across this bridge was an empty sand train to Middleton Towers hauled by 37167 on the afternoon of Saturday 27th November 1982 closing the curtain on the GN and GE Joint line.

Andy walks across the former railway bridge in Spalding that spans the River Welland. Until 1982 it carried the Spalding to March double track line opened by the GN and GE Joint. Whilst the route is largely intact active and continuing discussions around its reopening are regularly aired. However, any reconstruction would need to take an alternative route such as here in Spalding. Perhaps the £200 million that was spent on the Werrington dive under and line separation scheme could have been better spent reopening the GN & GE Joint route thus negating the need for the former?

The train is about to head south-west to Peterborough and then after toying with the ECML for a short distance head east again towards March. This substantial dogleg could have been avoided if BR had not closed the direct GN & GE Joint line from here to March back in 1982.
