Entering Spalding from the southwest the former GN & GE Joint line crossed the River Welland on this bridge. As roads run along both banks of the river this meant two level crossings at either end of the bridge that would have made for an interesting operation. Welland Bridge signal box was at the end nearest the camera on Cowbitt Road and would have controlled the set of gates on this side of the river. I am not too sure as to how the gates on the other side, London Road, were operated, perhaps there was a crossing keeper and associated hut...local advice anybody? Unfortunately, when Graham and I visited in the summer of 1981 we missed this bridge, the box and its associated signalling.
