By the late 1970s it was clear that the future of the Woodhead route very much in doubt. With closure looking increasingly likely and the consequential disposal of the unique 1,500V DC class 76s, a number of railtours were organised that traversed the line. One of these railtours was run by the D1041 Preservation Society titled 'The Pennine Explorer'. With a teacher from school and some friends, we travelled on this railtour picking it up at Bristol Parkway. Travelling north, it went via Birmingham New Street, Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly. Here it traversed the Woodhead line in its entirety featuring doubled-headed class 76 haulage. The return route was via the same route with us departing the train at Cheltenham.

37204 & 37282, outward leg of The Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Gloucester station
In the early morning autumnal gloom at Gloucester station, 37204 and 37282 have arrived with the The pennine Explorer railtour. The headboard has already been removed in preparation for the 37s being detached and running round to continue the journey north. We had only joined the railtour relatively recently picking it up at Bristol Parkway after travelling from Bradford-on-Avon via Bristol Temple Meads. This journey included an early morning charge up Filton Bank behind 50008 'Thunderer'!

A scan of the print rather than from the negative shows 37204 and 37282 waiting to leave Gloucester with the outward leg of 'The Pennine Explorer'. These were the days when enthusiasts were allowed off the end of the platforms in order to get their pictures before the railway gestapo banned this activity. This picture was given to me by David Brush who was travelling with our party.

37204 & 37282, outward leg of The Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Birmingham New Street station
Having positioned myself in the front vestibule of the first coach, on arrival at New Street I ran to the front of the train with the camera cocked in order to get a picture of the train before the hordes arrived! With just a couple of young lads on the adjacent platform running up to get the numbers of the 37s and some BRUTE trolleys nothing has got in the way!

40113, outward leg of The Scanner Express, Axminster-York, Birmingham New Street station
This is a picture that I do not quite understand? It shows 40113 at the head of The Scanner Express railtour that started out at Axminster and went to York. According to Six Bells Junction, the 40 took over from 47122 here at New Street. However, this image appears to show the 40 arriving into the station from the western end that is odd? That is unless it was performing a shunting move reversing out of the station for some reason or another.....help anybody?

40024 & class 119 DMU, LE for the outward leg of The Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Birmingham New Street station
A view somewhat forced upon me by the crowds of enthusiasts at New Street station! The image shows 40024 in the centre road arriving to head The Pennine Explorer railtour preparing to take it on to Manchester Piccadilly. In the background, below the brutalist concrete of New Street station, is a class 119 DMU awaiting its next duty.

Headboard, Pennine Explorer, Birmingham New Street station
Headboards have developed a bit of a reputation of being extravagant and memorable in design. This one for the Pennine Explorer is basic but does a nice job of showing off the profile of an class 76. Whilst waiting for 40024 to back on to the train, a member of the tour staff holds the headboard ready to be attached. I wonder who won this in the usual on-train auction on the way home and if it still exists today?

40024, LE for the outward leg of the Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Birmingham New Street station
40024 passes through the centre road at Birmingham New Street station ready to join the back of the Pennine Explorer railtour. It will lead the railtour on the second leg as far as Manchester Piccadilly. Notice the total absence of any H & S workwear for the three staff working at track-level. Unfortunately, I do not have a record of the 86 poking its nose into the right of the picture, the only two I have in my notebook are 86101 and 86243 so, it's one of those!

24073 & 24023 (condemned), class 47s & class 25, Crewe Yard
On the run in to Crewe station there was always a number of diesels in various states to the left of the train. In this image, two condemned type 2s, 24073 and 24023 await their fate. Beyond are a couple of class 47s and a 25. In my note book there are also another fifteen locomotives from first generation DMUs and 08s shunters to a class 85.

40024, outward leg of the Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Crewe station
This was a risky shot to take but one that I was determined to get! I wanted a picture of our train, the Pennine Explorer, with no other people spoiling the view. We had a crew change at Crewe so I positioned myself in the front vestibule and with the camera all ready, when we came to a halt, I dashed up to the front and got this picture of 40024 leading the train. A friend of mine held the door of the coach open. The railtour steward rushing along the platform made his views clear as he shouted up the platform to me!

As were swapping our English Electric class 40 for a 1500v class 76 we came into platform 1 at Manchester Piccadilly that was electrified with the appropriate wires rather than the more usual 25kv. The driver of 40024, steps down from the cab in order to retrieve the headboard whilst all the attention was at the other end of the train. Notice the large advertising hoarding for the Solid Fuel Advisory Service. In the 1970s the SFAS was part of the nationalised National Coal Board. Whilst the organisation still exists today, it is a private organisation that seeks to promote the use of solid fuels to heat our homes, with a great emphasis on the use of wood-burners rather than on coal in 1978.

76009, joining the Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Manchester Piccadilly station
On the end of Manchester Piccadilly's platform one, 76009 comes slowly into the station to attach to the Pennine Exporerer railtour. With 76014 it would haul the railtour over the doomed Woodhead route all the way to Rotherwood Exchange sidings to the east of Sheffield. Notice the tolerance endowed upon us spotters by being permitted right down to track level on the platform ramps. Also notice in the background a class 86. My notes have this down as possibly being current day celebrity 86259. There must be hundreds of photographs and notes out there, can anybody possibly confirm this?

This is a scan of an original print provided to me by my teacher from school Mr. Brush. It shows 76009 and 76014 waiting at Manchester Piccadilly to join the front of the Pennine Explorer railtour that they would haul across the Woodhead route to the sheffield area.

76014, 76004, 76041, 76001, 76051, 76040, 76047 & 76054, stabled, Guide Bridge
As it was a freight line, at weekends, there was little traffic over the Woodhead route with most of its unique 1500V class 76s lying idle. At the western end of the line in the eastern suburbs of Manchester they were kept in Guide Bridge yard as shown here. In an impressive and neat line-up no fewer than eight examples of the class are seen, 76014, 76004, 76041, 76001, 76051, 76040, 76047 and 76054. To a southern spotter like myself, this was 'cop heaven' as was much of what I recorded in my notebook on this particular day!

As we speed past Guide Bridge yard a line-up of stabled class 76s are on view. They are 76014, 76004, 76041, 76001, 76051, 76040, 76047 and 76054. Behind the spotter with his camera, that looks to be an Olympus Trip, is the spire of St. Stephens church located at the junction of Stockport Road and Guide Lane in the district of Audenshaw.

76016 & 76009, outward leg of the Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Dinting station
In the days when the travellers on railtours could alight at photo-stops and walk all over the lines! I have left it late to get back on as, once again, I wanted the minimum number of fellow travellers in-shot. The resultant image shows 76016 and 76009 at the head of the Pennine Explorer waiting at Dinting station. Notice the enthusiast trackside with the period Capital Radio 194 sweat shirt.

76016 & 76009, outward leg of the Pennine Explorer, Cardiff Central-Rotherwood, Penistone station
The second photo-stop of the Pennine Explorer was at Penistone station. Here, I have not been very successful in getting a shot free of people but it goes to show how busy the station must have been. It shows 76016 and 76009 leading the outward leg of the railtour Manchester Piccadilly to Rotherwood exchange sidings. I am a little confused by the position of the train in this image. In other pictures I have seen the train stopped much further forward than shown here right near to the junction with the Huddersfield line. Did the train set back or pull forward, perhaps to allow passengers from the rear coaches to alight?

Another picture scanned from an original print kindly given to me by my teacher Mr. Brush who organised this trip for us lads. His image is the reverse angle of mine and shows 76016 and 76009 sitting at Penistone station. The doomed 1500V 76s are leading the Pennine Explorer railtour that has paused at the run-down Yorkshire station for a photo stop. Both these 76s made it to the end of the Woodhead route in July 1980 and both were cut up at C. F. Booth's scrapyard in Rotherham during 1983 having completed thirty years' of service.

76016 & 76009, running round, Tinsley Yard
I am confused! I have this photograph labeled up as being taken in Tinsley yard and showing 76016 and 76009 running round. However, as our destination was Rotherwood Exchange sidings, why would the 76s run round here? Admittedly, the background does look more like the expanse of Tinsley rather than Rotherwood being was somewhat smaller. If anybody can help clear this one up I would appreciate the help!

76021, 76038, 76013, 76053 & 76031, stabled, Rotherwood Exchange sidings
At the eastern end of the Woodhead route was Rotherwood Exchange sidings where the wires stopped. Here, the 76s were removed from the cross-Pennine freights and diesels attached for onward movement. Rotherwood sidings was situated between Orgreave Lane (of colliery fame) and Retford Road in the district of eastern Sheffield called Woodhouse. The yard is unrecognisable today with most of it covered by the inevitable modern housing estate. In this image, whilst waiting for the 76s to run round the train, 76021, 76038, 76013, 76053 and 76031 are seen stabled waiting for their next job on Monday morning.

76016 & 76009, return leg of the Pennine Explorer, Rotherwood Exchange sidings-Cardiff Central, Manchester Piccadilly station
Having arrived back in Manchester Piccadilly's platform four at just gone 16.30 (according to the station clock) it was dark enough for me to attach the flash to my borrowed Rollie B35 camera. The set up for the flash was a bit odd on the Rollie as the hot shoe was on the base plate of the camera. So, the flash unit hung down rather incongruously whilst taking the picture! 76016 and 76009 are seen on the blocks waiting to be detached from the return Pennine Explorer railtour whilst 40024 was being attached at the other end.

40024, return leg of the Pennine Explorer, Rotherwood Exchange sidings-Cardiff Central, Birmingham New Street station
It's all activity on arrival at Birmingham New Street. Whilst some cabbing takes place of 40024, the headboard is removed before the loco. is detached from the stock of the returning Pennine Explorer railtour. All these years on I am surprised at how powerful my little flash was attached to the base of my tiny Rollie B35 camera; it gives a good spread of illumination. The use of a flash is not something that should be encouraged and on today's railways and for obvious reasons, it is banned under the NR guidelines for photographers.

40024, return leg of the Pennine Explorer, Rotherwood Exchange sidings-Cardiff Central, Birmingham New Street station
By way of a comparison of the last picture, I have removed the flash from the camera and tried my luck at a time exposure. There is some movement in the image so I am not sure what I used to steady the camera as I did not posses a tripod. This image did not make the original collection due to its poor quality but after some work in Photoshop a pretty atmospheric picture has been produced. It shows 40024 being cabbed by a line of young enthusiasts as it waits to be detached from the Pennine Explorer railtour as it returns to Cardiff Central taken at Birmingham New Street.

37204, return leg of the Pennine Explorer, Rotherwood Exchange sidings-Cardiff Central, Cheltenham Spa station
For some unknown reason, the final return leg of the Pennine Explorer railtour from Birmingham New Street to Cardiff Central was handled by a single 37204 as opposed to the double headed affair on the way out. Here, 37204 leaves Cheltenham station taken using the flash attached to the base plate hot shoe on the Rollie B35 camera. Our party alighted at Cheltenham in order to get a connection home in time for for the last train from Bristol to Bradford-on-Avon. Our haulage from Cheltenham was 47262 followed by a class 118 DMU onwards from Bristol.
