As were swapping our English Electric class 40 for a 1500v class 76 we came into platform 1 at Manchester Piccadilly that was electrified with the appropriate wires rather than the more usual 25kv. The driver of 40024, steps down from the cab in order to retrieve the headboard whilst all the attention was at the other end of the train. Notice the large advertising hoarding for the Solid Fuel Advisory Service. In the 1970s the SFAS was part of the nationalised National Coal Board. Whilst the organisation still exists today, it is a private organisation that seeks to promote the use of solid fuels to heat our homes, with a great emphasis on the use of wood-burners rather than on coal in 1978.
