The weather had broken with a return to more normal summer conditions; cloudy and overcast! We made our way from Plymouth to Exeter following the railway all the way. We had an extended stay at Newton Abbott and spent an enjoyable hour or so on the fabled sea wall. Before having our usual curry in the evening, we took some time at St. Davids station as it right opposite our hotel for the night.

Bere Ferrers (ex.Pinhoe) signal box (Preserved) (LSW, 1875)
When I last photographed this signal box in 1986 it was in the village of Pinhoe on the L&SW route just east of Exeter. It was built there in 1875 and stood next to the level crossing in the middle of the village. It has been reconstructed at The Tamar Belle heritage centre adjacent to the Newtwork Rail station at Bere Ferrers.

Bere Alston signal box (derelict) (LSW, c.1890)
The former Bere Alston signal box stands on the disused platform at the station that is still open. This station was once on the L & SW mainline route that linked London to Plymouth (and beyond) but that went inland from Exeter rather than via Brunel's troubled coastal route. There is constant talk of this line being reopened to avoid further issues with the coastal route. Notice the swarm of bees that had taken up residence on the end of the signal box just above the window.

Having come to a halt at Bere Alston station, the guard of the 09.29 Gunnislake to Plymouth working walks from the train to change the points. This will then allow the class 150 to reverse and take the line to the left and continue its journey to Plymouth.

With the crew having changed ends, 150102 leaves Bere Alston station with the 09.29 Gunnislake to Plymouth working. This section to the right is the only part of Bere Alston station that is open today even though the rest is intact having been shut as a through route in 1968. Notice the disused prefabricated concrete platform that was very common throughout the L & SW network.

220031, XC 11.25 Plymouth-Dundee (1S49, 1E), Totnes station
Totnes station in Devon still retains it two through lines that is not a particularly common feature of many stations today. Cross Country 220031 slows for its stop at the station working the 11.25 Plymouth to Dundee 1S49 working. This is not a journey that I would relish on a Voyager that, at the end of the day, is nothing more than a glorified DMU !

Andy collecting the coach numbers from the 09.06 Paddington to Penzance as it arrives at Totnes station with 43170 is at the rear of the train. 43170 was a late delivery as part of the penultimate batch introduced to the NE/SW route in 1982 as part of set 253044. We are sitting in Totnes' former signal box that is now the home to two cafés, one on the ground floor that once housed the frame and this one on the first floor. Both appeared to be very popular with both passengers and locals. I photographed the exterior of the box on a dark night back in August 1980, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29740305404/totnes-signal-box-gwr-great-western

The welcoming interior of the old signal box on Totnes station's up platform has been converted into a smashing café. Many feature have been retained along with pictures and information about the 1925 Great Western box. Andy and I spent a very pleasant half an hour or so with a cup of tea and a cake watching the trains go by!

143621, GW 11.23 Exmouth-Paignton (2T13, 4E), Torbay Road footbridge, Paignton
I am sure that the rail users of South Devon are looking forward to when these early second generation DMUs come off-lease and out of service soon! Here, 143621 arrives at Paignton and is about to pass under Torbay Road footbridge and cross the level crossing with the 11.23 from Exmouth. I have not taken a picture from this classic location since the mid 1980s, then it was of Peaks, 47s and 50s interspersed with some first generation class 118 DMUs all passing an array of semaphores.

The South Devon Railway's resident class 25 is D7535 'Mercury' sits inside the shed at their Paignton base. As 25185, it was withdrawn in November 1984. It arrived at the SDR in February 1986 making its way there under its own power from Toton! It has been here in Devon ever since.

This particular example is a very early one built at Derby in 1952 entering service as 13014. It never actually received a TOPS number as it was withdrawn in 1973 whence it moved for further work at the NCB Merthyr Vale colliery in South Wales.

Torquay South signal box (office) (GW, 1876)
The lovely stone-built signal box at Torquay was constructed by the Great Western in 1876 to a Saxby and Farmer design typical of the time and area. It was not built on the platform being a free-standing structure but when the platforms were extended in 1925 they were built around the box making it look shorter in height, the door to the sunken locking-room gives it away. I managed to photograph it before closure came under BR on 15.11.84 as part of the West of England MAS scheme, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29500835004/p473-class-118-dmu-45055-13-50-exeter. Today, designated as a 'historic' building, it is used as an office by a local company; I couldn't think of many better places to work!

The service only has one stop left before it arrives at its destination where it arrived four minutes late. 43079 emerged as part of set 254012 in 1978 at had a long life on the Eastern Region before it moved to become Western Region power car.

Torre signal box (disused) (GW, 1921)
Torre signal box looks a sad sight all boarded up on the up platform at the station. It has been used for various things since it closed in November 1984 but, as can be seen from the notice, it is due to go to auction later in the year. The box is a grade II listed structure built by the Great Western in 1921. I presume that its height was to facilitate sighting but, it certainly gives options to a purchaser! 43139, GW 11.06 London Paddington-Plymouth (1C79, 23L), Newton Abbot station
43139 'Driver Stan Martin 25 June 1950 - 6 November 2004' brings up the rear of the 1C79 11.06 Paddington to Penzance as it leaves Newton Abbot station. This is a scene that has changed dramatically since my last visit in 1986, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29422482004/x47549-up-working-newton-abbot-station. In this view, to the right would have been Newton Abbot's very fine West signal box. The whole scene was dominated by the huge gantry that controlled all workings at this end of the station. This was dismantled and now sits at the entrance to an industrial and retail park situated behind the former David and Charles publisher's building to the left.

About to complete its journey, the 13.43 Plymouth all-station service arrives into Newton Abbot formed of 150239. Whilst Newton Abbot station retains a lot of its GW character, it is a shadow of its former self with only three platforms now in use and a very basic track configuration since it was extensively remodelled in 1987 at the same time the mechanical signalling was swept away.

70817 brings and blast of colour to an otherwise drab summer's day as it passes through Newton Abbot at some speed with the 11.38 Moorswater to Aberthaw cement tank empties. 143603, GW 14.24 Exmouth-Paignton (2T19, 1L), Parsons Tunnel
142603 and a class 150 has just emerged from Parsons Tunnel on the sea wall in south Devon. It is working the 14.24 Exmouth to Paignton service. I find it a constant surprise that Network Rail have yet to install the dreaded palisade fencing along the top of the wall. The lengths that they go to in some locations that are far less vulnerable that this, for example the WCML around Shap, when compared to this stretch seems to make no sense. I would love to have a look at their risk assessment! Mind you, I am not complaining, and long may it stay like this for all to enjoy.

800003 & 800004, 12.47 Penzance-North Pole IEP Depot test run (5X92), Parsons Tunnel

Here, as the 12.47 Penzance to North Pole return working is seen heading back to London. It has to questioned if these IETs are going to be as good as the HSTs on the Devon and Cornwall banks. On paper, there is a distinct power deficit on their part. This picture featured in Rail magazine. Thirty-eight years previously, I visited this spot, then the subject matter was somewhat different but everything else was virtually the same..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/26669846004/x50012-09-50-penzance-london-paddington

An unidentified HST in Great Western's new green livery makes its way along the sea wall just east of Dawlish. Much in evidence in the foreground and on the far side of the Exe Estuary is the famous Devon red sandstone dating from the permain period (approximately 298.9 million years). I have found that over the years, the condition of the light turns this to a bright red, to a soft orange even a slightly grey colour.

A picture full of interest! Apart from 143620 leaving Dawlish Warren with the 15.53 Exmouth to Paignton service, the famous camping coaches can be seen. There have been camping coaches at this location since the 1930s with their fortunes having waxed and waned over the intervening time. At the time of writing, the coaches are operated by the Brunel Holiday Park. Also of interest is the structure on Dawlish Warren's up platform that resembles a signal box. This is a private residence that has been built in the style of a traditional box and a very good job has been done. The original box, that was dismantled in 1990, was at the far end of the down platform. The train is about to pass under the 1873 GWR footbridge and is passing the site of the first station here named Warren Hat and after that Warren Platform before the present-day station was opened in 1912.

I have found them to be comfortable and roomy trains with good seat to window alignment, a feature all too often not considered it seems.

43087, GW 17.33 London Paddington-Paignton (1C91, 3E) & 43150, 19.34 Taunton-Laira TMD ECS (5C22), Exeter St. David's station
A meeting of HSTs at Exeter St. David's station. To the left 43087 '11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment Royal Logistics Corps' is at the rear of the 17.33 Paddington to Paignton. It is about to be overtaken by 43150 that is running non-stop through the station as the 5C22 19.34 Taunton to Laira ECS. This explains why I have taken the picture, what looks to be a little early. As the light was so poor I was already pushing the camera's ISO capacity somewhat and could not get a fast enough shutter speed to capture a non-stopper close up with no motion blur.

150265, GW 19.41 Exmouth-Exeter St. David's (2E52, RT), Exeter St. David's station
150265 has terminated at platform three of Exeter St. David's having arrived with the 19.41 from Exmouth. Even through it was one day off the longest day, the light was pretty grim by now. I was using a slow shutter speed in order to try and keep the ISO as low as possible so as to combat digital noise.

These trains will leave within minutes of each other and travel close behind one another as far as Aller Junction where the Penzance working will continue off heading westwards.

150129, GW 19.17 Barnstaple-Exeter Central (2R96, 3L), Exeter St. David's station
150129 pauses at Exeter St. David's station with the 19.17 Barnstable to Exeter Central working. Andy and I took this train the short distance up the hill to Central station. From there we sought out a curry house for a much needed evening meal.

Tickets, Exeter St. David's-Exeter Central
Andy and my tickets from Exeter St. David's to Exeter Central station. 85 pence each was a small price to pay for the journey that took about five minutes, and avoided us toiling up the hill to Exeter city centre from the station!
