Mike, Andy and I left the car in the excellent park and ride facility just off the M275's Junction 1 then taking the PR1 service right to the Hard Interchange terminal. Here we took the FastCat catamaran service to Ryde, a journey of about twenty minutes. Buying a combined Island Line and ferry ticket enabled unlimited travel on the classic 1938 stock still in operation on the island's relatively short network between Ryde Pierhead and Shanklin. It was quite an experience to travel on the former London Underground stock with its maximum speed of forty-five miles per hour as it bounced and rattled along the ancient bullhead track. With the new stock due in the coming few months, I am not sure that this will be enough to drag the line into the twenty-first century. Far greater levels of investment are still needed.

Portsmouth Harbour signal box (SR, 1946)
No longer directly in front of any trackwork sits the former Portsmouth Harbour signal box. It was built by the Southern Railway to their Type 13 design and was opened on 01.06.46. With its thoroughly modern Westinghouse Brake and Saxby Signal Co. Ltd. Style 'L' power lever frame installed it replaced two signal boxes one of which was destroyed by German wartime bombing.

Standing at Portsmouth Harbour station Great Western Railway's 166212 is seen having just terminated with the 05.51 from Bristol. Always associated with the Thames Valley lines in and out of Paddington for so many years it's strange seeing the Turbo units in places such as Portsmouth.

483008, SW 09.07 Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin (2D15), Ryde Pier Head station
On arrival at Ryde Pier Head, we were greeted with some Isle of Wight sunshine and our first Class 483. 483008 would soon work the 09.07 to Shanklin but we chose not to take this train but walk the length of the historic pier to Ryde and seek out some breakfast. The pier was opened in July 1814 making it the world's oldest seaside pleasure pier.

483008, SW 10.07 Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin (2D19), Ryde Esplanade station
Having enjoyed a hearty breakfast at a café on Ryde's Union Street we returned to Esplanade station to catch an Island Line service to the end of the line at Shanklin. Here our train, being worked by 483008, arrives at the station coming off the pier with the 10.07 Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin service.

483008, SW 10.38 Shanklin-Ryde Pier Head (2U24), Shanklin station
483008 waits at Shanklin station ready to work the 10.38 to Ryde Pier Head that we would take as far as Lake station. The track once extended on from Shanklin behind where I am standing. It took an increasingly circuitous route to Ventor in an attempt to avoid the steep hills that characterise the south coast of the Isle of Wight. The former second platform at Shanklin can be seen to the left of the image.

Frontage, Shanklin station
Despite being two station buildings merged into one Shanklin station is grade II listed. The main building was built in 1864 for the Isle of Wight Railway complete with a tower and turret. The red brick extension was added in 1881 but is in a totally different style. Passenger patronage has been steadily falling over the last few years, with the same applying to all the stations on The Island Line. Having spent a day travelling on the line, unfortunately, it is all too clear to understand why this is happening.

Frontage, Sandown station
The less than impressive frontage of Sandown station. Unlike its cousin a short distance away at Shanklin, this 1864 station is not so aesthetically appealing and is not listed. It had a nice looking café occupying what would have been the old ticket hall and waiting room but, as it was only the third day of the new year, it was fermé!

483006, SW 10.49 Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin (2D21), Sandown station
483006 arrives at Sandown with the 10.49 Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin service. We took this train to the next station, a short hop to Lake station. Notice that the track is doubled here at Sandown, it is where north and southbound services can pass.

483006, SW 11.18 Shanklin-Ryde Pier Head (2U24), Lake station
483006 arrives at Lake station that is located between Shanklin and Sandown. Lake station was opened by BR in 1987 to serve the local community and visitors to Sandown Bay that is only five minutes' walk away. The station is built of timber in an elevated position with a basic shelter. Until the opening of Smallbrook Junction in 1991, Lake was the newest station on the island.

Brading station
Taken from a foot crossing to the south of Brading station the buildings, former trackbed and preserved signal box can be seen. The station is in a delightfully rural location and once acted as the junction for the short branch that led down to Bembridge for which there was a bay platform between the signal box and the station. It was announced in the summer of 2019 that the passing loop is to be reinstated at Bembridge to increase capacity during peak times. Indeed, whilst we were on the station there was a gaggle of staff from Network Rail and South West Trains surveying various things, walking around with clipboards and taking photographs.

Brading signal box (IoW, 1882)
The superb former Isle of Wight Railway signal box at Brading is seen complete with its frame intact. It is a grade II listed structure that has undergone much improvement since it was listed in 1986, closed in 1988 and then re-assessed by Historic England in 2002. It is now a museum and part of the Brading station visitor centre that was closed on the day of our visit, which was Friday 3rd January! With his poor eyesight, Andy thought that the box was manned stating that there was a signalman standing by the levers until I pointed out that it was in fact an authentic-looking dummy!

483008, SW 11.38 Shanklin-Ryde Pier Head (2U28), Brading station
Having spent half an hour or so on the lovely station at Brading, 483008 returns with the 11.38 Shanklin to Ryde Pier Head. We took this train north to Ryde St. John's Road station. The disused platform and trackbed to the right of the train will soon be brought back into use providing The Island Line with another very useful crossing point.

Ryde St. John`s Road signal box (SR, 1928)
Taken from the station footbridge Ryde St John's Road signal box is seen looking to be in very good condition. It was built in 1928 by the Southern Railway and was once one of a number of boxes on the Isle of Wight. It now controls all the signalling on the remaining 'mainline' route from Ryde to Shanklin. Older photographs taken from this angle reveal that the land behind the box, now occupied by a scaffolding company, was once a Southern Vectis bus station.

483009 & 483002, stored, Ryde St. John`s Road station
Looking very sorry for themselves and never going to work again are two sets of The Island Line's 1938 former London Underground sets. In the foreground is 483009 that is heavily stripped for spares having been taken out of service some time last year. It is highly likely that when new Vivarail Class 484 stock arrives later this year that this and the other redundant units will be cut up on site.

483004, stored, Ryde St. John`s Road station
Allegedly, 483004 in a serviceable condition! It is seen just to the north of Ryde St. Jonh's Road station on a very rusted piece of track indicating that it has not moved for some time. When the summer season starts about Easter time, I believe that The Island Line needs three sets of class 483s in service. So, maybe 004 will work again for one last season prior to the Vivarail class 484s taking over services, themselves re-built from D78 stock dating from the mid-1970s.

483009 & 483002, stored, Ryde St. John`s Road yard
An elevated view of Ryde St. John's Road yard showing two Class 483 sets that have been stripped and scavenged for spares to keep the others in operation. At the back is 483002 that has been out of service since 2008. It awaits its fate that will be scrapping within the next six months or so. In the foreground, having been the subject of a graffiti attack, is 483009 that was taken out of service last year. It's incredible to think that 483009 entered service just three months before the start of the London Blitz and that it has been in virtual continual operation since!

483008, SW 12.07 Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin (2D27), Ryde St. John`s Road station
Ryde St. John's Road station was a little rundown with pretty basic facilities despite its size and location. Andy photographs 483008 as it arrives with the 12.07 Ryde to Shanklin service that we took all the way to the end of the line. In the background under the bridge is 483004 out of use but allegedly available for service.

Mike & Andy on-board 483008, SW 12.07 Ryde Pier Head-Shanklin (2D27)
Taking a photograph or, for that matter, taking a cup of coffee on-board one of The Island Line services is a challenge. They travel a maximum of forty-five miles an hour but it feels so much quicker due to the crazy ride! The trains buck around and clatter on the bull head rail that has seen better days. We were not sure if it was more the condition of the track or the eighty year old units that created this disconcerting ride. It will be extremely interesting when the Vivarail Class 484s arrive very soon if the ride will improve or if the track will need replacement too? Andy and Mike appreciate the soft seats on 483009 as it rattles its way between Ryde and Brading.

483008, SW 12.38 Shanklin-Ryde Pier Head (2U32), Shanklin station
Having taken 483008 from Ryde St. John's Road we are about to take it back again from Shanklin making our only end to end trip of the line to Ryde Pier Head. Introduced to service on London Underground in February 1940, the unit is approaching the end of its life due to the imminent replacement by D78 stock dating from the 1970s in the coming months. The 483s may well be by far the oldest service trains on the network but, in all honesty, they have had their time!

Controls, 483006, Ryde Pier Head station
The driver of 483006 permitted me to take a picture through the door of 483006 at Ryde Pier Head station. The driver's cab is compact to say the least and lacks a few modern comforts. The controls are pretty basic with the most modern part being the grey panel to the left that was added when the units were converted by BR for use on the island in 1989 following the retirement of the 1923 Class 485 and 486 stock.

483006, SW 13.18 Shanklin-Ryde Pier Head (2U34) Ryde St. John`s Road station
For our final trip on The Island Line operated by South Western Railway, we took 483006 to Ryde Pier Head for the connecting SeaCat sailing back to Portsmouth Harbour. At Ryde St. John's Road station the 13.18 from Shanklin arrives past the delightful Southern Railway 1928 signal box that is still in use controlling the signalling on the whole line.

444001, SW 14.15 Portsmouth Harbour-London Waterloo (1P48, 4L) & 377130, SN 14.11 Portsmouth Harbour-London Victoria (1J41, RT), Portsmouth Harbour station
Back on the mainland at Portsmouth Harbour station, two operators' services stand side-by-side ready to leave for London. To the left South Western Railway's 444001 will leave working the 1P48 14.15 to Waterloo whilst Southern's 377130 will depart first with the 1J41 14.11 to Victoria. The former SWR service takes just over an hour and a half to make the seventy-five mile journey whilst the latter travels eighty-five miles taking exactly two hours. It's also interesting to remember that both these companies have recently been blighted by appalling industrial relations that have greatly impacted the travelling public.

450091, SW 13.09 London Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour (1T37, RT), Cosham station
Just catching some late afternoon sunshine between some tall buildings, 450091 arrives at Cosham station working the 13.09 Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour. When Cosham station opened in 1848 it served a small and isolated village that has now been comprehensively consumed into the urban sprawl that is Portsmouth.

Southern's Electrostar 377114 drifts into Cosham station over the level crossing with the 14.28 Southampton to Brighton service. There used to be a signal and crossing box just behind where the man in the blue jacket is standing. It was closed and demolished recently and I am a little disappointed as it was one of those that got away.

Rover ticket
Our Island Line rover tickets that were bought at the Wightlink office combined with our return fare on the SeaCat. The total for the three of us was £75 that included a bit of a discount for a senior. I feel that we got good value out of this that gave us unlimited travel on The Island Line and no doubt our last chance to travel on stock that was eighty years old!
