The journey back was on an HST but due to weekend engineering works, it was diverted via Leeds. There was spirited running on in order to maintain timekeeping!

82223, VTEC 13.00 Edinburgh Waverley-York (1E16) & 91116, VTEC 13.25 York-Edinburgh (1F15), Newcastle station
To the right, dvt 82223 waits to leave Newcastle leading the 13.00 Edinburgh Waverley to York. 91116 is seen arriving on the adjacent platform with the 13.25 York to Edinburgh running as 1F15. RTT was not having a 'funny' and I was reading it properly, all electric services north of York were starting at and terminating from the station due to weekend engineering works between Colton Junction and Doncaster.

Looking through the trainshed of Newcastle station towards The Keep 156443 is waiting to leave with the Northern Trains 13.42 Hexham to Nunthorpe service. Over to the left, 91109 'Sir Bobby Robson' is seen wearing its Virgin East Coast flash down its bodyside leading the 1F15 13.25 York to Edinburgh Waverley. Like all electric services at Newcastle over this weekend, their journeys were either terminating or departing from York due to engineering works.

91109, named after one of Newcastle's best-known celebrities, 'Sir Bobby Robson' waits at the city's Central station leading the 1F15 13.25 York to Edinburgh express. This train started from York due to engineering works on the line between Colton Junction and Doncaster.

91109, VTEC 13.25 York-Edinburgh Waverley (1F15) & 221128, XC 07.25 Plymouth-Edinburgh Waverley (1S41), Newcastle station
In the rain outside the protection of Newcastle's station, Voyager 221128 is leaving ahead of 91109 'Sir Bobby Robson'. The CrossCountry train is the 07.25 Plymouth to Edinburgh whilst the Virgin East Coast working is the 13.25 York to Edinburgh. I suspect that the Class 91 will be hot on the heels of the Voyager as they head north one after the other!

221119, XC 13.09 Edinburgh Waverley-Plymouth (1V64), Newcastle station
Voyager 221119 arrives into Newcastle forming the 13.09 Edinburgh to Plymouth service. The relatively simple track layout at the eastern end of Newcastle station is a marked contrast to how it used to be. Prior to the opening of the Metro in 1980, Newcastle Central had an area, now a carpark, used by the suburban trains. These joined the trackwork from the left of this image creating a very complicated and extensive network of tracks.

221138, XC 15.05 Newcastle-Reading (1V96) & 185147, TP 15.08 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street (1F71), Newcastle station
This view, inside Newcastle Central station, is very similar to York from the curvature of the track to the design of the latticed wrought iron footbridge. To the left 221138 waits to start its journey south as the 15.05 to Reading. In the bay platform to the right 185147 will leave a few minutes after the Voyager with the 15.08 to Liverpool Limes Street.

43308, VTEC 11.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S13), Newcastle station
A crew change is taking place at Newcastle station as the 11.00 King's Cross to Inverness service pauses on its long journey to Scotland. The leading power car is 43308 'Highland Chieftain' that has had its red vinyl applied by its new operator, Virgin Trains East Coast, who took over operations on the ECML on the first day of last month. The white car in the background is parked on the site of the former suburban platforms that were closed in 1980 when the Newcastle Metro was opened.

43295, VTEC 13.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (via Leeds) (1E17), Newcastle station
Our train back to Peterborough arrives at Newcastle station. The 13.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross hst was running through to London, unlike electric services that were terminating at York due to engineering works between Colton Junction and Doncaster. The HST was able to travel under diesel power on the unelectrified track from Colton Junction to Leeds and then back to the ECML at Doncaster. The set is being led by power car 43295 that was originally numbered 43095 that has always been an Eastern Region power car released as part of set 254020.

On-board 43295, 13.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (via Leeds) (1E17), Shipton, north of Skelton
To prove that the ageing HSTs can still cut the mustard! Travelling at the speed they were designed, and originally marketed as (remember InterCity 125?) 43295 leads the 1E17 13.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross on the racetrack between Thirsk and York. At this speed, the Mk. III stock rode relatively well considering it is now approaching forty year's old but they are a little draughty at the carriage ends near the vestibules.

222013, stabled, Holgate sidings
East Midlands Trains operate one service to and from York every day except Sunday starting and ending at St. Pancras. This odd service seems a little strange and may well be part of their franchise agreement set up with the Department for Transport. After it arrives from St. Pancras, it is stabled before returning later in the day. As we leave York on our hst, the stabled Meridian, in the form of 222013, is seen in Holgate sidings next to some stored coal wagons.

43366, stabled, Neville Hill Depot
Nevill Hill depot is located to the east of Leeds and is an important servicing and maintenance depot for a number of train operating companies. As we pass the depot, one of CrossCountry's high-speed trains is seen stabled with power car 43366 at this end. One of East Midland's hst sets can be seen in the background too.

142023, class 08 & class 43, stabled, Neville Hill depot
Passing Neville Hill depot very little is seen in and around the facility. To the left, a Norther Trains' Pacer 142023 is seen stabled. In the mid-distance, a class 08 is sat idle between duties whilst and unidentified CrossCountry hst is being serviced with its nose cone in the raised position.

Entering Leeds station
Taken from our hst as we enter Leed station from the east. Opened after a huge re-build in 2002 the design of the roof was to let a lot more light on to the platforms. However, this re-build may not be enough as passenger numbers are rising steadily and predicted to rise further with considerable pressure on the present station likely. The northern terminus of HS2 is also going to be within the vicinity too!

185136, TP 14.22 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough (1E88), Leeds station
185136 leaves Leeds station forming the 14,22 Liverpool to Scarborough service. The photograph is taken from our diverted hst as it enters the station. Notice th Tvaleodge hotel behind the station, I am trying to persuade my wife for us to stay in this when we visit Leeds and better still for us to bag a room at the back, at the moment, she's having none of it!

66148, 14.31 Goole Docks-Scunthorpe BSC, Doncaster station
On entering Doncaster station on our hst from Newcastle to Peterborough, 66148 is seen on the far side of the station. However, I have some issues with the correct identification of its working. From the WTT it appeared to be the 14.31 Goole Docks to Scunthorpe but of that was the case then it's facing in the wrong direction. Can anybody help me to confirm this working, please?

A Pacer enters Doncaster station working the 2P79 16.18 Scunthorpe to Lincoln service. The image is taken from the door or the 13.30 Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross hst that is preparing to leave the station. Despite it being the end of April, the weather was cold and grey.

Class 82, VTEC 15.03 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D19) & class 180, GC 15.21 Bradford Interchange-London-King`s Cross (1A67), Doncaster station
An interesting view of Doncaster station looking north taken from the droplight of our hst as it leaves Doncaster station. To the left, the 15.03 King's Cross to Leeds waits at platform four to continue its journey north. Meanwhile, a Grand central class 180 Adelante waits to leave southwards behind our service with the 15.21 Bradford Interchange to King's Cross.

On-board 43295, 13.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (via Leeds) (1E17), Maxey crossing, Helpston
I was monitoring the speed of the 13.30 Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross HST for most of the journey using my Blackberry 'phone. There was some spirited running, particulalry on the decent from Stoke summit. Here, as we approach Maxey level crossing north of Peterborough, we reached the dizzy heights of one hundred and thirty-one miles per hour. I believe that this was the highest speed that we reached on the journey and this was maintained for the next few miles until the driver had to brake on the approach to Peterborough.

66739, stabled, Peterborough yard
The site of the former Peterborough diesel depot (PB) is still in use today as a maintenance facility for freight operator GBRF. As we approach the station 66739 'Bluebell Railway' is seen stabled on one of the depot roads awaiting attention.

Under threatening April skies, a collection of class 66s are seen stabled at GBRF's Peterborough servicing and maintenance facility. To the extreme left is 66739 'Bluebell Railway' and then in the foregrounds are 66741 and 66751. Another two are seen, one inside the shed and the other tucked away at the back. This facility is located on the site of the former diesel depot a short distance to the north of the station.

Eastfield signal box (GN, 1893)
A remarkable survivor just north of Peterborough station is Eastfield signal box. It controls ths sidings to the east of the ECML and access to the GBRF depot through a number of semaphores signals. In this view, the rear of the 1893 Great Eastern box is seen that keeps many of its original features including some very tall finials and ornate bargeboards.

365512 has yet to leave Peterborough station and is now some five minutes behind schedule as the 17.46 to King's Cross. These class 365s have been the backbone of Great Northern services for some years now and have proved to be reliable units.

Tickets, Newcastle-Peterborough
Our return tickets from Newcastle were excellent value at £14 apiece. This represents just over seven pence per mile, a third less than the outward journey. The return journey was also slightly longer as we travelled via Leeds, so taking that revised route into account brings the cost per mile down to just over six and a half pence.
