Plymouth service. The relatively simple track layout at the eastern end of Newcastle station is a marked contrast to how it used to be. Prior to the opening of the Metro in 1980, Newcastle Central had an area, now a carpark, used by the suburban trains. These joined the trackwork from the left of this image creating a very complicated and extensive network of tracks.
