170272, LE 09.50 Peterborough-Ipswich (1L73), Peterborough station
My first visit to the recently expanded Peterborough station since its completion found it much larger than before with a completely new island platform, numbered six and seven. Here, Abellio GA's 170272 waits to depart eastward from the new platform six with the 09.50 local stopper service to Ipswich.

91118, 09.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S09), Peterborough station
91118 arrives at a busy Peterborough station with the 09.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh service. My wife and I enjoyed a trip on this train to Newcastle. The Mk. IVs remain my favourite modern-day stock, even though it is coming up for twenty years old now they are roomy and very comfortable and, best of all, no under floor engine noise intrusion!

08911 & 56297, NRM, York
Passing the National Railway Museum there is usually something to delight passengers on trains. Today, it was a little tame, no crack express steam locomotive or powerful heritage diesel but an ex-Southern Region brkae van number 56297 and the museum's resident shunter 08911 'Matey'.

142118, NT 11.40 Metrocentre-Newcastle (2W31), Newcastle station
On arrival at Newcastle station, the first train that greated us was a delightful Northern Trains Pacer. 142118 is pulling into platform eight with the 11.40 Metrocentre to Newcastle shuttle, a distance of just over three miles.

156510, SR 13.23 Newcastle-Glasgow Central (1S74), Newcastle station
ScotRail's 156510 is about to commence its one hundred and seventy-six-mile journey to Glasgow Central as the 13.23 from Newcastle. This superb journey goes via the lovely Tyne Valley through Hexham to Carlisle. Then it heads north into Scotland taking the dramatic former G&SWR route through Dumfries and Kilmarnock that passes through some dramatic and remote countryside.

185116, TP 12.06 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street (1F68), Newcastle station
TransPennine Express' 185116 will soon leave Newcastle station with the 12.06 to Liverpool Lime Street. These fast and smart-looking units from the Desiro family are about ten years old now and are the backbone of services from east to west in the north of the country. In previous years, these services were worked by BR using a rake of Mk. I or Mk. II stock with a Peak class 45 at the front.

67006, stabled thunderbird, Newcastle station
67006 'Royal Sovereign' is seen stabled at the western end of Newcastle Central station. Whereas the WCML uses class 57s as its thunderbird rescue locomotives, the ECML utilises class 67 that are stabled at various strategic locations up and down the line between King's Cross to Edinburgh.

220005, XC 15.05 Newcastle-Reading (1V96), Newcastle station
According to the metadata recorded, the timecode for this photograph is 15.05. This means that the crew standing chatting on Newcastle's platform three will need to be aboard their train as it is due to depart as the 15.05 to Reading! I have said it before but I make no excuses for saying it again, I really would not want to make this journey aboard what is, after all, just a glorified dmu!

66750, 13.53 North Blyth-West Burton power station (6B39), Newcastle station
I must admit that this working caught me by surprise, hence the poor framing of the train. However, as 66750 is a photographic cop I am including the image. The 66 leads the 13.53 North Blyth to West Burton power station train loaded with imported coal. The train will end up at the West Burton facility between Gainsborough and Retford with the coal fueling the 'B' station as opposed to the 'A' station that is gas-fired.

142088, NT 15.24 Newcastle-Carlisle (2N37), Newcastle station
A fair few passengers are seen on Newcastle's platform eight waiting to board the 15.24 to Carlise being worked by Northern Train's 142088. It will be a rickety and bouncy old journey along the Tyne Valley to Carlisle and one that will take sometime given that the 2N37 is the all stations stopper!

142084, NT 15.02 Metrocentre-Morpeth (2A22) & 142016, NT 14.49 Morpeth-Metrocentre (2A15), Newcastle station
A meeting of reversed services at Newcastle Central station but with very few passengers in evidence. To the left, the 15.02 Metrocentre to Morpeth service is worked by Pacer 142084 whilst, to the right the 14.49 Morpeth to Metrocentre 2A15 service is formed from 142016. It is saying something about our modern-day world when there are back to back railway services operating to a shopping centre, even if it is the second largest in the UK.

66075, 15.07 Tyne Yard-North Blyth, Newcastle station
66075 passes through Newcastle Central at the northern end of the station. It is leading the 15.07 Tyne Yard to North Blyth coal empties. With coal traffic on the decline due to a drop in national demand, the northeast remains an area where coal traffic can be seen on a regular basis even if it is dealing with imported coal.

142050, NT 14.45 Hexham-Nunthorpe (2N34), Newcastle station
The northeast has its fair share of Pacers with these un-loved units providing the backbone to the services throughout the region, all operated by Northern Trains. 142050 waits at platform five of Newcastle Central working the 2N34 Hexham to Nunthorpe service.

43316, VTEC 12.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S16), Newcastle station
With its recently added Virgin flash vinyl 43316 leads the 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness hst service into Newcastle station. The tail of the train will still be rattling across the 1906 King Edward VII bridge that spans the Tyne, one of a number of impressive bridges in the Newcastle area.

221123, XC 13.00 Glasgow Central-Plymouth (1V66), Newcastle station
Newcastle station is a magnificent structure that is grade I listed. It is very well maintained and has frequently been the winner or runner up of the best large station award. In this view of the western end the size and grandeur of the train shed can be seen with 221123 standing underneath working the 13.00 Glasgow Central to Plymouth.

43319, VTEC 12.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S16), Newcastle station
No guesses needed as to where this photograph is taken! 43319 is seen at Newcastle station waiting to leave at the rear of the 1S16 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness. The previous operator of services on the ECML, the Department for Transport under the guise of East Coast ceased its operations some weeks ago but Virgin has only made limited progress rebranding the trains. This HST still wears the National Express East Coast (2007-2009) livery as the state-owned and run East Coast operator merely re-branded their stock rather than embarking on a costly re-paint.

67006, stabled thunderbird & 142016, 15.31 Metrocentre-Newcastle (2W49), Newcastle station
You can almost hear the wheel flanges of 142016 squealing as they make contact with the check rail as it arrives into Newcastle station! The Pacer is arriving at the station with the 15.31 shuttle service from Metrocentre and is seen passing the stabled Thunderbird in the form of 67006 'Royal Sovereign'.

156475, NT 14.18 Nunthorpe-Hexham (2N39), Newcastle station
156475 has just crossed the High Level bridge and is about to enter Newcastle station where it will pause whilst working the 14.18 Nunthorpe to Hexham service. Behind the Super Sprinter is the Turnbull building striking a dramatic pose between the railway and the River Tyne below to its right. This impressive structure was built in 1890 and occupied by the printers R. Robinson & Co. In 1963 it was taken over by Messrs E. & F. Turnbull, a Newcastle-based ironmonger, who used it as a wholesale warehouse and who gave the building its present-day name. Finally, in 2002 it was converted into luxury 'loft' type apartments, whatever they are supposed to be!

43300 VTEC 14.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E19), Newcastle station
43300 'Craigentinny' leads the 14.30 Edinburgh to London King's Cross hst service into Newcastle station. Not only does the power car wear a cast nameplate and Scottish thistle in celebration of the depot's centenary, but it also some large vinyl graphics stating 'Craigentinny 100 1914-2014'. However, I have got to say that the new red Virgin vinyl clashes somewhat with the magenta one applied by the state-owned East Coast company last year!

156479, NT 12.12 Glasgow Central-Newcastle (1E76), Newcastle station
156476 approaches journey's end with the Northern Train's 12.12 Glasgow Central to Newcastle working. Rather counter-intuitively, it is approaching from the east but having traversed the Tyne Valley into Newcastle, it then passed Gateshead to the south of the city to take Greensfield Junction and cross the High Level Bridge into the station.

43308 VTEC 14.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E19), Newcastle station
Under the renovated trainshed at Newcastle station, the 14.30 Edinburgh Waverley to King's Cross service has come to a halt at platform four. The rear power car is 43308 'Highland Chieftain' still wearing its National Express East Coast livery despite the operator going out of operation in 2009 after 'handing the keys back' to the Department for Transport who then took over operations.

Class 220, XC 09.46 Southampton-Newcastle (1E36), Newcastle station
A class 220 Voyager has just terminated at Newcastle having arrived with the 09.46 from Southampton Central. It is now leaving the station as empty coaching stock and will run to Heaton depot where it will be serviced before being prepared to to run south again.

91121, VTEC 16.25 Newcastle-London King`s Cross (1Y44) & 91103, VTEC 13.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S18), Newcastle station
A meeting of grey trains at Newcastle Central! Both 91121 (left) and 91103 (right) still wear their NXEC livery with simple East Coast branding despite both operations being obsolete. I am sure that it will not be long before the two locomotives will wear their smart and new Virgin East Coast liveries. The train to the left will soon leave with the 16.25 to King's Cross whilst to the right the 13.00 from King's Cross to Edinburgh is getting underway to continue its northwards journey.

142016, NT 16.02 Metrocentre-Morpeth (2A26), Newcastle station
142016 trundles out of Newcastle Central station with the 16.02 Metrocentre to Morpeth service. The Pacer is heading towards the grade I listed and scheduled ancient monument known as The Keep, a remaining part of Newcastle Castle. As well as a visitor attraction, The Keep has also been a favourite haunt for railway enthusiasts as it provides a superb elevated view of the station from the east.
