The journey to York from Wellingborough was a pretty uneventful affair. After arrival, I popped back to the station for an hour or so made particularly easy as our hotel was only five minutes walk away!

222004, EM 07.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C20), Wellingborough station
The 07.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras East Midlands Trains service passes through Wellingborough worked by 222004. Unfortunately, a wet and chilly May morning, weather that characterised the whole of our week away in York!

One of East Midlands Trains' small squadron of HSTs passes through Wellingborough led by 43066. The HST is working the 08.14 London St. Pancras to Nottingham 1D12 that like virtually all the 'fast' services no longer stop at Wellingborough (and Kettering) much to the chagrin of locals.

One of the former Hull Trains' Pioneers (as they were dubbed) in the form of 222103 passes through Wellingborough working East Midlands Trains' 07.04 Lincoln to St. Pancras. The operator runs just one up Lincoln service with a balancing working in the late afternoon, a strange anomaly that I do not know the history to unless anybody can advise me.

Leicester station (formally Known as 'Midland') is a shadow of its former self. It once boasted an overall roof and station buildings all designed by the renowned architect Charles Trubshaw who did a lot of work for the Midland Railway. This was all swept away, save for the grand frontage on London Road, by BR in 1978 when it was replaced by this rather utilitarian structure that remains very much of its time. As 222018 leaves with the 08.30 St. Pancras to Nottingham, 222104 arrives with the 08.49 Sheffield to London service.

170107, XC 10.20 Leicester-Birmingham New Street (1P10), Leicester station
CrossCountry's 170107 waits at Leicester's platform one. As the station display screen indicates, it will soon work southwest as the 10.20 service to Birmingham New Street. The buildings in the background are largely former railway structures associated with the goods depot the sidings of which once occupied the large area now used for parking; an all to a common story, unfortunately.

97301, stabled, Derby REVL
Passing Derby's REVL (Railway Vehicle Engineering Ltd) is always a bit of a treat for the enthusiast as there a lot of stock to be seen from the passing train. Network Rail liveried and branded 97301 stands outside one of the maintenance sheds between duties. As D6800 and later 37301 this member of the class was based for nearly all of its life in and around Yorkshire but for a brief foray to Gateshead. In 2007 it was saved from being scrapped and became 97301 after refurbishment at Barrow Hill. Along with three other members of the class it has been fitted with ERTMS signalling equipment and is used primarily on the Cambrian lines from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, which requires trains to have this type of onboard signalling equipment.

A second European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) fitted Class 97 stands at REVL's Derby headquarters in the form of 97303. It was converted, along with three other Class 37s, from 37178 back in 2007. Almost fully hidden behind the Class 97 is FGW's 57603 'Tintagel Castle' awaiting attention of some kind. This Class 57 was converted from 47349 and entered service in 2004. At the rear of the photograph is one of REVL's resident shunters 08663 a Horwich built member of the class dating from May 1959.

After settling into our nearby hotel at the junction of Queen Street and Blossom Sreet I nipped back to York station for an hour before going out for dinner. 91131 eases into the station at the rear of the East Coast 14.00 Edinburgh to King's Cross service. I never tire of York station with its size and magnificence combined with the impressive variety of trains from many different operators.

To the right, CrossCountry's 220032 Voyager gets away working the 08.32 Penzance to Glasgow Central service. With the National Railway Museum just putting in an appearance to the top left of this photograph 221124 arrives at the station working the 13.00 Glasgow Central to Plymouth CrossCountry service. The unchecked growth to the north of the station in this view is a little disappointing with Network Rail not appearing to do anything about it?

185141, TP 15.50 Scarborough-Liverpool Lime Street (1F81), York station
TPE's 185141 arrives at York station forming the 15.50 Scarborough to Liverpool train. I am not a particular fan of these units but I know that they are highly rated by crews and passengers alike with their high fuel consumption being their Achilles heel. However, they do follow quite taxing routes especially when crossing the Pennines such as this one will do in an hour or so.

43367, GR 15.00 London King's Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S22), York station
In days past, to visit the National Railway Museum one had to take a lengthy walk starting from the station entrance turning left into Station Road and then left again into Leeman Road crossing under the railway lines in a long, poorly lit and urine stenching pedestrian tunnel eventually arriving at the museum entrance. Now, the station footbridge has been extended for visitors to then walk the short distance directly to the museum taking a few minutes. The bridge extension and steps can be seen in this view that also shows 43367 leading the 15.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh HST service.

Tickets, Wellingborough-York
At £90 the return fare from Wellingborough to York was pretty good value at £45 each way for all three of us. Of all three journey options that we had (from Northampton, Peterborough or Wellingborough) the was the cheapest by a fair margin and the second quickest with the straightforward dash up the ECML being by far the fastest. However, that journey would have involved an hour's drive to Peterborough and then parking that somewhat defeats the objective of 'letting the train take the strain'!
