I took a run back out to Roskilde spending an hour or so photographing what it had on offer. I was hoping for some freight but, unfortunately, I saw none!

1512, 13.58 Kalundborg-Østerport, Copenhagen Central station
Looking distinctly battle-weary DSB Class ME number 1512 waits at the rear of the 13.58 Kalundborg to Østerport. The train is seen just outside the grand train shed of Copenhagen Central station. Yet another graffiti daubed double-decker coach is seen to the left of the Østerport service.

5206, 15.37 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster, Copenhagen Central station
The driver of DSB IC3 number 5206 'Kristine Svendsdatter' climbs aboard his train at Copenhagen Central station. I travelled on this train, the 15.37 to Nykøbing Falster as far as Roskilde. I consciously decided to travel on this diesel train rather than one of the locomotive-hauled services to compare this unit with the latter. Despite its unfortunate looks, the unit was comfortable and roomy with some invertible noise from the underslung six-cylinder Deutz engines. This particular unit holds a speed record at one hundred and twenty-eight miles per hour between Årup and Middelfart in October 1991; for such a slab fronted design this seems an impressive feat!

1530, 15.27 Østerport-Holbæk, Roskilde station
For a relatively small town of just over fifty thousand people, the station is large with what appears to be a disproportionately high number of platforms. Class ME number 1530arrives at the station leading the 15.27 Østerport to Holbæk service. This image clearly illustrates how short the double-decker trains are being, in this particular case, just four carriages long.

5007, 15.24 Østerport-Nykøbing Falster-Hamburg, Roskilde station
IC3 number 5207 'Virgo Ane' arrives at Roskilde working the 15.24 Østerport to Hamburg via Nykøbing Falster international working. This two-set working will split later in its journey with the leading five-car set travelling to Germany via the Fugleflugtslinjen ferry (En. the bird flight line or as we would say as the crow flies)

Roskilde signal box
I believe this to be Roskilde's signal box or control towers as they are referred to on the continent. It is certainly an unusual design dating I suspect from the 1980s or 1990s and is very 'Scandanavian' in its styling having a very de rigueur external steel frame!

1508, 15.46 Holbæk-Østerport, Roskilde station
Class ME 1508 pauses at Roskilde station at the rear of the 15.46 Holbæk to Østerport service. Whilst the stock of these services, and all others for that matter, were smart and clean the fleet of MEs were decidedly tatty and a bit rough around the edges as is the case with 1508 here.

1512, 15.44 Østerport-Kalundborg, Roskilde station
Class ME number 1512 makes a typically smokey departure from Roskilde station with the 14.44 Østerport to Kalundborg service. These Henschel built locomotives date from 1981 but with the drive for electrification on DSB gathering pace, their time is limited now. This is no bad thing as they are probably deeply polluting and chronically inefficient when compared to what is available today and represent locomotives from a totally different design era.

5675, 15.50 Copenhagen Central-Frederikshavn, Roskilde station
IC4 set number 5675 leaves Roskilde station with the 15.50 Copenhagen Central to Frederikshavn. Frederikshavn is a charming but strategically important town of some twenty-five thousand people to the very north of Jutland and some distance from Copenhagen by train representing somewhat of a northern outpost of the DSB network. I hope that 5675 makes it that far without incident as their propensity to break down is well documented with appalling availability!

DVT, 14.12 Vamdrup-Østerport, Roskilde station
I think that the Bombardier built push-pull double-decker DVTs (or steering wagons as they are referred to by DSB) look extremely ungainly being very tall to take advantage of the continental loading gauge. At Roskilde station the 14.12 Vamdrup to Østerport service arrives with ME 1531 just in view powering the train at the rear.

1531, 14.12 Vamdrup-Østerport, Roskilde station
ME number 1531 comes to halt at Roskilde station powering the rear of the 14.12 Vamdrup to Østerport via Copenhagen Central train.

1523, 16.11 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster, Roskilde station
With a lot of heat haze and exhaust Class ME 1523 gets away from Roskilde station leading the 16.11 Copenhagen Central to Nykøbing Falster service. The ME was involved in a major accident at Haslev in April 1994 where it was hit by a double-headed freight hauled by MZ 1442 and 1439. Major damage was caused to all three locomotives that took two years to repair. 1523 also holds the accolade as being the first member of the class to emerge from the works in DSB's new blue livery in March 2002, the same design that it still wears today.

1526, 15.55 Østerport-Holbæk, Roskilde station
A relatively wide-angle photograph at Roskilde station showing the 15.55 Østerport to Holbæk train pausing whilst its passengers who will have travelled from Copenhagen disembark and leave the station. Soon, Class ME 1526 will get the train away and take a junction northwards to head to its destination

5637, 15.58 Copenhagen Airport-Aarhus, Roskilde station
IC4 set 5637 passes Roskilde station forming the 15.58 Copenhagen Airport to Aarhus service. I wanted to sample one of these AnsaldoBreda Italian built units but regrettably did not get the opportunity. They remain troublesome in service despite being out of squadron service several times in their short career for modifications to be undertaken both linked to passenger comfort and overall safety.

DVT, 16.16 Holbæk-Østerport, Roskilde station
The 16.16 Holbæk to Østerport service arrives at Roskilde station led by a steering wagon (Da, styrevogn) with Class ME 1516 pushing at the rear. I took this train to its destination, to the north of Copenhagen Central station.

Copenhagen Central signal box
What I believe to be Copenhagen Central signal box is located on the southern approach to the station. It offers a commanding view of the large yard behind where I am taking the picture from and is a typically European design! If anybody has any further information about the structure please contact me.

1516, 16.16 Holbæk-Østerport, Østerport station
Having arrived at Østerport, in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, 1516 pauses ready to work a return working already having its tail lights illuminated. I had just alighted from this train having travelled in from Roskilde. Whilst the platforms Østerport are modern and extremely functional they have been married nicely to the classic street-level station building.

2004, 4322 & 2117, stabled, Østerport station
To the northern end of Østerport station is a large stabling area for a variety of units. In this view, there are two different classes of the fabled 'rubberface' units that are actually quite different. In the centre is a three-car electric ET set number 4322. Either side of the electric is two four-car IR4 sets 2004 and 2017.

Østerport station
Østerport station is located in the northern area of Copenhagen and was originally a terminus for the coastal line from Helsingør. Now it is a busy commuter interchange with passengers arriving and moving on from the S-Line and DSB with a bus terminal at street level. In the next few years, there will also be an integrated Metro station linking in from both the City Circle Line and M4.

Frontage, Østerport station
The rather grand frontage of Østerport station is seen from street level. It was opened in 1897 and today handles thirty thousand passengers daily. It takes its name from the historic Østerport city gate that is close by. After falling into a state of poor repair DSB restored the station in the early 2000s with the station platforms radically modernised.

1525, 17.44, Østerport-Kalundborg, Østerport station
Class ME 1525 waits at Østerport station at the head of the 17.44 to Kalundborg. I travelled on this train for the short journey to Copenhagen Central station.

2036, 11.21 Stockholm-Copenhagen Central, Copenhagen Central station
The 11.21 from Stokholm has just terminated at Copenhagen Central station with passengers disembarking. The service has been worked by one of Swedish Railway's (SJ) X2 high-speed trainset number 2036. Unlike the latest generation of high-speed electric trains, including our own Pendolinos, I think that these units are rather ugly, a situation not helped by the rather dowdy colour scheme. However, having said this they do date from a different evolutionary era being introduced during the eraly 1990s.

Frontage, Copenhagen Central station
The elegant frontage of Copenhagen Central station is seen against a very grey sky. The station sits atop the platforms with access to the platforms either side of a long and wide concourse. The station has undergone a number of refurbishments and expansions over the years. This process is set to continue with a dramatic expansion planned for the next decade. I wonder wif, when this happens, that the rather unusual and out of character digital clock will be changed?

Copenhagen Card tickets
In the morning my family and I used the excellent Copenhagen Cards and I did the same in the afternoon for my run to Roskilde. I could have gone further and travelled a little more widely utilising this excellent card but time restraints prevented this. Perhaps a return visit is possible?
