1526, 16.44 Østerport-Kalundborg, Copenhagen Central station
Taken from the steps that permit access to the Copenhagen Central station platforms from Titegensgade are all 'open' with no barriers or gate lines; how refreshing! Class ME 1526 gets underway with the busy 16.44 Østerport to Kalundborg.

1525, 16.56 Østerport-Holbæk Copenhagen Central station
One of the thirty-seven DSB Class ME locomotives, number 1526 waits at Copenhagen Central station. There is a crew change taking place on the 16.56 Østerport to Holbæk with the driver likely to take the service all the way to the the Zealand town.

1537, 17.11 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster, Copenhagen Central station
ME 1537, the last in the class, arrives at Copenhagen Central with the 17.11 to Nykøbing Falster. These locomotives weigh in at a hefty one hundred and thirteen tons but still manage a top speed of one hundred and seven miles per hour. Whilst they have settled down and become reliable locomotives now, there were a lot of problems when the double-decker stock was introduced with the induction of exhaust fumes into the stock.

1537, 17.11 Copenhagen Central-Nykøbing Falster & 1525, 16.56 Østerport-Holbæk, Copenhagen Central station
To the right, 1525 gets noisily away from Copenhagen Central with the 16.56 Østerport to Holbæk. To the left, the driver walks towards 1537 ready to get it away in five minutes time with the 17.11 to Nykøbing Falster. I like the lighting in this photograph despite that it breaks the rules being rather side-lit! Notice the array of touching in machines arranged neatly in the foreground.

1514, 15.41 Nykøbing Falster-Østerport, Copenhagen Central station
With its tail lights illuminated 1514 is pushing at the rear of the 15.41 Nykøbing Falster to Østerport service at Copenhagen Central station. This particular locomotive received substantial front end damage when just two years old in June 1983 after an accident with fellow class member 1517 observed later in the afternoon, see....https://www.theimagefile.com/?Action=MF&sa=editfile&id=28999082804 . Notice the graffiti to the stock in this image, the work of these vandals seemed to be a particular problem on DSB.

4404, 17.20 Copenhagen Central-Helsingborg & 1518, 16.16 Holbæk-Østerport, Copenhagen Central station
Wearing its distinctive vinyls DSB Class ET set 4404 makes ready to leave Copenhagen Central with the 17.29 to Helsingborg, a Swedish town north of Malmo. This unit was built by Bombardier in 2011 and is owned by Transitio AB a Sweedish multi-transport procurement and leasing company. As part of its journey, this unit will use the impressive Øresundståg bridge and tunnel to reach Sweeden, it wears the branding of the same name on its flanks. To the right of the Sweedish service is 1518 at the rear of the 16.16 Holbæk to Østerport train. This locomotive is one of a handful of the ME class that are 'tunnel approved' meaning they too can operate Øresund services to Sweden as per the Class ET.

5653, 17.07 Østerport-Kalunborg, Copenhagen Central station
One of the notoriously unreliable DSB IC4 diesel units 5653 waits to leave Copenhagen Central with the 17.07 Østerport to Kalunborg train. This particular unit entered service on 2011 having been built by the Italian builder AnsaldoBreda and penned by world-famous designed house Pininfarina. As an illustration of the problems encountered with these sets, the contract between DSB and the manufacturer was signed in 2001 with it taking a whopping twelve years for the last one to be delivered! As has been stated elsewhere, with only fifty per cent availability at any one time the only ones who benefit from this debacle are the lawyers!

1529, 17.36 Copenhagen Central-Holbæk, Copenhagen Central station
Dating from 1983 and equipped to operate double-decker stock in 2002 ME 1529 waits at the rear of the 17.36 Copenhagen central to Holbæk evening commuter service. From this angle and from the slightly lower continental style of platform these engines look huge! As well as being on the large side they make an equally large amount of noise having a 3300hp GM E645E3B sixteen cylinder engine.

5280, 17.24 Østerport-Nykøbing Falster-Hamburg, Copenhagen Central station
A DSB IC3 set 5280 'Henrik Gerner' leaves Copenhagen Central with the 17.25 17.24 Østerport to Hamburg via Nykøbing Falster and the Rødby (Denmark) and Puttgarden (Germany) car\rail ferry. In the coming few years the combined car/rail ferries will cease operation as the first stage towards the complete removal of the ferry link due to the opening of the Fehmarn Belt fixed link, an ambitious and very costly eleven-mile immersed tunnel due for completion in 2028.

1514, 17.44 Østerport-Kalundborg, Copenhagen Central station
In the lovely late afternoon, sunshine Class ME number 1514 makes typically smokey departure from Copenhagen Central station with the 17.44 Østerport to Kalundborg service. This locomotive was involved in a collision with classmate 1517 when just two years old, the other locomotive was seen earlier in the afternoon, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28999081804/x1514-15-41-nyk-bing-falster-sterport

Concourse, Copenhagen Central station
The impressive concourse of Copenhagen Central station sits above the tracks at street level with access to the platforms in the right of this image down a series of escalators and steps. The station dates from 1911 being the work of the famed Danish architect Heinrich Wenck. As with many large stations, capacity is an issue and there are ambitious plans to expand the station by building more terminal platforms above the present ones entering straight into the concourse at this level.

1518, 17.55 Østerport-Holbæk, Copenhagen Central station
A couple of DSB drivers exchange some Danish words in the afternoon sunshine at Copenhagen Central station. The 17.55 Østerport to Holbæk is being hauled by Class ME 1518. This locomotive arrived at Rødbyhavn on 08.03.83 having been constructed by Henschel & Son in Kassel, Germany.

1519, 18.04 Østerport-Ringsted, Copenhagen Central station
Class ME 1519 still appears to be accelerating, judging by the exhaust, as it enters Copenhagen Central from the series of short tunnels to the north of the station. The graffiti daubed locomotive is leading the 18.04 Østerport to Ringsted working a town of some twenty-three thousand people in the centre of the island of Zealand forty miles from Copenhagen.
