A trip with my boss to Wakefield to collect a car for a customer. After a run up on the train we had fun driving back in an aging Ford Fiesta!

43047, EM 05.30 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C11), Wellingborough station
If I was a commuter travelling to London from Wellingborough station, I would make an effort to get the 05.30 Sheffield to St. Pancras service rather than the following train. The reason for getting up earlier would be in order to travel in the luxury of a Mk. III HST rather than a miserable and over-crowded Class 222 Meridian! 43047 is seen powering the rear of the service as it pauses at Wellingborough station.

222002, 06.32 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F05), Wellingborough station
Our train north arrives at Wellingborough station. 222002 is working the 06.32 St. Pancras to Sheffield that my boss and I took as far as its desination.

37716, stabled, RVEL Derby
The close proximity of Loram's Railway Vehicle Engineering Limited (RVEL) depot at Derby to the line as one enters the station from the south of the MML route always rewards spotters with a rich array of locomotives. In amongst two items of Network Rail stock 37716 is seen. Introduced in early 1963 it still looks smart and purposeful on the railways today. With its virtually 'go-anywhere' route availability it will remain useful into the future.

37716, 37682 & 31465, stabled, RVEL Derby
Basking in the spring sunshine outside Loram's Railway Vehicle Engineering Limited facility at Derby a number of almost vintage locomotives are seen. To the far left is 37716 then one of Network Rail's class 73s that have recently been converted from an electro-diesel to a full diesel. Next in the line up is 37682 followed by 31465. Without knowing the identity of the class 73 (can anybody advise?), by far the oldest locomotive in this scene is 31465 having been introduced in the summer of 1960 making it an incredible forty-five years old!

73139, 31106 & 31459, stabled, RVEL Derby
Electro-diesel 73139 is seen outside Railway Vehicle Engineering Limited (RVEL) on the approach to Derby station. It is still wearing its brown and cream Pullman livery from its time when it worked for the charter operator. It was withdrawn way back in 1999 and I am not at all sure what the future holds for it. It may well be used for component recovery and then scrapped or possible conversion to one of the Ultra73s but, I suspect that this will be unlikely. Behind the 73 is 31106 31459.

31106 & 31459, stabled, RVEL Derby
Two examples of the two hundred and sixty-seven built class 31s stand outside Derby's RVEL facility. In the foreground, 31459 'Cerberus' is still proudly wearing its nameplates and the once very smart, but now somewhat faded, Fragonset livery. I am not sure what will become of this locomotive that has already escaped the cutter's torch once being on Toton's scrap lines for many years? To the left of the image is 31106, formally named 'Spalding Town', seen in a reproduction BR blue. After being leased to Fragonset, FM Rail, and RVEL during which time it travelled all over the network operating test trains it has now been withdrawn from service and faces an uncertain future. Surely, it is too good to scrap?

142007, 09.06 Sheffield-Leeds (2L18), Sheffield station
Having arrived at Sheffield, my boss and I alighted from the Meridian that had brought us up from Wellingborough and prepared ourselves for a bit of Pacer action! 142007 waits at Sheffield's platform 3A from where it will form the 09.06 to Leeds. We took this train as far as Wakefield Kirkgate stopping at every intermediate station.

144006, NT 07.48 Leeds-Sheffield (2N15), Sheffield station
144006 and a classmate disgorge their passengers at Sheffield station. The twin-set service has just terminated having worked the 2N15 07.48 from Leeds. In the coming few years, these much un-loved units are to be withdrawn from service with brand new shiny trains on-order for the north.

142007, 09.06 Sheffield-Leeds (2L18) & 142051, NT 09.29 Sheffield-York (2Y80), Sheffield station
A familiar scene at Sheffield station for many years finds two Pacers side-by-side at platforms three and four. 142007 will work the 09.06 to Leeds via Wakefield whilst 142051 will leave a little later with the 09.29 to York. Whilst the front ends of these two units look to be identical note that 142007 has the small manual type destination screen whilst 142051 has the full-size electronic version.

158848, NT 10.40 Leeds-Sheffield (1L81), Horbury Junction
Taken under the M1 overbridge at Horbury Junction, 158848 passes with the 10.40 Leeds to Sheffield service. There was once many more tracks at this location and being so close to the huge Healey Mills yard meant that it was a busy area, not least for coal traffic.

Horbury Junction signal box (LNWR, 1927)
Despite the ghastly upvc treatment afforded to Horbury Junction signal box its LNWR lineage cannot be disguised even if the finials having been crudely cut from the gable ends! The box was built in 1927 to their 5+ design and contained a sixty five-lever frame, but with no semaphores now in use, most of the levers will be painted white and oou. Despite its relatively isolated and pleasant looking location, this image is deceiving, it is right next to the very busy M1 motorway located below a bridge between junctions thirty-nine and forty.

Former level crossing gates, Forge Lane, Horbury Junction
At the end of Forge Lane that leads from the village of Horbury is a country park centred around some lakes that were formally quarries. Taken standing under the bridge that carries the Wakefield to Barnsley line south from Horbury Junction this view shows Forge Lane and the now disused crossing gates. These gates afforded access to the former extensive Charles Roberts and Co Ltd wagon works.

Former level crossing gates & track, Forge Lane, Horbury Junction
No wagons or rail vehicles have passed over this section of track for a number of years! This is one of the several lines that lead into the former Charles Roberts and Co Ltd wagon works located at Horbury Junction. After surviving into the 1970s the company, formed in 1862, was taken over by the Procor group and, subsequently, became part of Bombardier in 1990 finally closing in 2005.

Former level crossing gates & track, Forge Lane, Horbury Junction
There were a number of tracks that led into the former Horbury railway works that closed in 2005 with the extensive site now in use by a number of companies. Whilst the works was best known for it manufacture, overhaul and maintenance of wagons it was also involved, during World War II, in the manufacturing of the Churchill tank. When Procor bought the operations, the plant produced bodyshells for the BR class 60 and when Bombardier took over it built class 92 bodyshells. Just before closure in the early 2000s it completed extensive overhauls on GNER's Mk. IV stock. Strange to think that rakes of smart blue GNER Mk. IV coaches will have rolled past this spot!

Former level crossing gates & track, Forge Lane, Horbury Junction
Our delightfull drive home from Wakefield in the shape of a 1997 Ford Fiesta is seen in full view here on Forge Lane at Horbury Junction! The redundant, but still mainline connected, track leads into the former Horbury railway works (Charles Roberts and Co Ltd railway wagon works) that ceased its railway operations in 2005 now being the home to a number of industrial units. Whilst none of these new occupiers of the site are involved any railway activity (that I'm aware of) the huge network of the track is still in place. A study of the site from Google Earth reveals this network and to the far southern end of the site what appears to be the remains of the traversers used to move larger coaches and vehicles from different parts of the site.
