In interesting journey home via a circuitous route that took in the southern Dales, the Aire and Wharfe valleys to Bradford and then finally across to Goole and, of all places, Grove Road on the ECML! From there we drove south by my preferred route on the A1. If it's flowing, I find this a far more enjoyable drive than the M1. Arrival home in Roade was about 22.00.

68017 & 68005, NT 06.16 Carlisle-Barrow-in-Furness (2C40, 2E), Carl Cross SD220813 
 In beautiful morning light one of Northern's DRS operated 'super trains', the loco. hauled 06.16 Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness, passes Carl Cross just south of Kirby-in-Furness. The working was being led by 68017 'Hornet' with 68005 'Defiant' on the rear. This photograph has so many elements from the hills of the southern Lakes, Duddon Sands to the telegraph wires still in situ. Andy and I could happily have spent much longer here and hereabouts but we had to head for home.

Park South signal box (Furness, 1883) 
 When I last visited Park South signal box in October 1985 there was no huge road viaduct in the background. Also, finding it using my Ordnance Survey map of the same vintage led to some problems with roads that didn't exist anymore but, in the end, with a bit of a 'gut feeling' we found it nestling down in the valley just north of Barrow-in-Furness. Park South signal box is Furness Railway type 3 structure dating from 1883. It is located a few yards north of Park South Junction that was formally named Thwaite Flat Junction. It controls manually the level crossing on the minor road that drops steeply down from Dalton.

Park South signal box (Furness, 1883) 
 Park South signal box is dominated by the viaduct of the A590 Dalton bypass. This substantially built signal box was constructed by the Furness Railway in 1883 and is typical of the type that they constructed. It contains a second-hand 24 lever frame that came out of the nearby Coniston Station box when it was closed, along with the rest of the delightful branch of the same name, in 1962.

Dalton Junction signal box (Furness, 1902) 
 When I photographed this lovely box in October 1985, I managed a full fronted 3/4 shot from high up on the bank to the left. I tried to replicate the shot this time but was tharwted by excessive growth on the embankment. This is a shame as there is no other way to get close to it apart from the road bridge as here. Dalton Junction was built by the Furness Railway to its final box design and was opened in 1902 when the short link line was opened to save trains having to make the huge diversion into Barrow.

Ulverston signal box (Furness, 1902) 
 Another box that I photographed during my October 1985 survey of the Cumbrian Line. Back then I got a most reasonable shot from track level, I'm not at all sure how I managed it but I may have walked up from the siding that comes off the line to the north? This time, I have had to make do with this shot that found me teetering atop a fence in order to clear the foliage! Ulverston box is a substantial affair opened by the Furness in 1902 and built to their Type 4 design.

158784, NT 10.49 Carlisle-Leeds (2H89, 6L), Settle Junction SD813606 
 As we were driving down the A65 just south of Settle we noticed that the up line was pegged at Settle Junction. We also spotted a half decent spot and a place to pull off the road and park safely. After a short wait, 158784 arrived with the 10.49 Carlisle to Leeds. Set against a lovely backdrop dominated by the flat topped peak of Ingleborough at 2 372 feet the scenery is superb. Off course, Ingleborough is better known to us in the railway fraternity as 44007 (D7) and, more recently, as 60022. The eagle eyed almost you will have spotted that in this picture are no fewer than four home signals all controlled by Settle Junction signal box some short distance away.

66740, 11.25 Arcow Quarry-Pendleton (6M37), Hellifield station 
 66740 passes through Hellifield leading the 11.25 Arcrow to Pendleton freight. The train has been descending from Arcow through Settle and will continue its journey to Pendleton near Salford via a very roundabout route through Apperley Junction, Wakefield and Rochdale. Notice the overgrown platforms here at Hellifiled station. Trains do not stop at this part of the station and it is only photographers who venture out this far!

Hellifield station 
 The wonderful wrought ironwork at Hellifield station was erected by the Midland Railway and opened in June 1880. The architect was the renowned Charles Trubshaw who was responsible for many other railway buildings including one of my local stations, Kettering. Notice the Midland Railway insignia in the iron work. Unfortunately, at the other end of the station the canopy is supported by some acrow props as it is fracturing and putting the structural integrity at risk. As the station is Grade II listed I am sure that the work will be undertaken and that it will be repaired sympathetically!

60047 & 60076, 11.03 Carlisle North Yard-Doncaster Royal Mail, Hellifield station 
 Realtime Trains indicated that a strange working was heading towards us at Hellifield. Curious and with a short wait on our hands we took a drink in the station cafe but then the train arrived so we were in a bit of a panic! We should not have worried though as the two Colas 60s, 60047 and 60076 'Dunbar' came to halt at the platform and promptly sat there for some 35 minutes whilst the driver went into the aforementioned cafe, had his lunch and sat reading Steam magazine!

144022, NT 12.20 Leeds-Lancaster (2H13, 2L), Hellifield station 
 One of the very few signal gantries remaining on the network is at Hellifield. It is shawn of most of its arms now but is still in use. Between the gantry and the 1911 Midland 4C signal box 144022 approaches the station forming the 12.20 Leeds to Lancaster in a very similar position to one I photographed four years ago, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30016458751/x8-150118-nt-11-14-leeds-heysham Notice that in this direction, looking south east, that the cloud has begun to build and cover the sun, a portent of things to come later in the day!

144022, NT 12.20 Leeds-Lancaster (2H13, 2L), Hellifield station 
 144022 leaves Hellifield station forming as the 12.20 Leeds to Lancaster. This train will diverge from the mainline at Settle Junction and head cross-country via Wennington towards the coast. Notice the well watered hanging baskets hung from the wrought ironwork that makes up the impressive canopies at Hellifiled station.

66722, 09.29 Doncaster Down Decoy-Arcow Quarry (6M31), Hellifiled station 
 66722 'Sir Edward Watkin' passes through Hellifield station at some considerable speed leading the 6M31 09.29 Doncaster to Arcow quarry. Even though it was running empty to Arcow Quarry near Horton in Ribblesdale it would still have to toil hard on the lower gradients of the Settle and Carlisle.

60076 & 60047, 11.03 Carlisle North Yard-Doncaster Royal Mail, Hellifield station 
 60076 'Dunbar' and 60047 sit at Hellifield station whilst the driver sits in the station cafe enjoying his lunch and a read of Steam magazine! The Colas 60s were running light engine as the 11.03 Carlisle to Doncaster. Andy I followed this working and caught it at two other locations on our way towards the Aire Valley.

60047 & 60076, 11.03 Carlisle North Yard-Doncaster Royal Mail, Gargrave station 
 Andy and me had seen this duo earlier at Hellifield station. As it had a long stop-over there we were able to drive the relatively short distance to Gargrave to see 60047 and 60076 'Dunbar' again. They were running as the 11.03 Carlisle North Yard to Doncaster light engine.

333004, NT 14.17 Skipton- Leeds (2H47, 5L) & 60076 & 60047, 11.03 Carlisle North Yard-Doncaster Royal Mail, Skipton station 
 On arrival at Skipton we were met with a state of utter chaos! There had been a torrential storm at Leeds earlier in the morning and it had received a number of lightning strikes that had taken out all the signalling and communication systems. As a result, all trains were stopped within the area and a there was total lack of information, the gate staff here at Skipton said even the 'phones were not working! Because of this, the class 60 duo of 60076 'Dunbar' and 60047 were held so we saw them for the third time running as the 11.03 Carlisle North Yard-Doncaster Royal Mail. 333004 forming the 14.17 to Leeds was the first train for some hours to leave Skipton as things were just beginning to get back to normal.

Nameplate, 60076, Skipton station 
 The nameplate of 60076 'Dunbar' pictures at Skipton station. This is the second name that this locomotive has carried being previously 'Suilven', the remote Scottish mountain.

321902, NT 14.16 Bradford Forster Sqaure-Ilkley (2D60, 23L), Ben Rhydding station 
 321902 arrives at Ben Rhydding station working the 14.16 Bradford Forster Square to Ilkley train. The 3219XX units were the first of this highly successful class to be derived in 1991 and have spent their entire life in the West Yorkshire area. However, despite a mid-life refurbishment at Wabtec in Kilmarnock, their time is now limited as the class 331s are introduced in the next couple of years. Notice that whilst the sun is shining the skies had a very stormy air about them and it was extremely humid.

321902, NT 14.51 Ilkley-Bradford Forster Square, cancelled from Shipley (2D63, 28L), Burley in Wharfedale station 
 321903 arrives at Burley in Wharfedale forming the 14.51 from Ilkley to Bradford to Forster Square. Due to earlier weather created chaos in the Leeds area the timetable was in disarray with trains in the wrong places as services tried to return to normal. As a result, this 2D63 service, already running 28 minutes late, was cancelled from Shipley. Despite the sun shining, the very grey sky in the background gives an indication that not all was well with the weather!

333008, NT 15.10 Ilkley-Leeds (2V41, 21L), Menston station 
 333008 arrives at Menston station working the 21 minute late 15.10 Ilkley to Leeds. Menston is a commuter town on the northern outskirts of both Leeds and Bradford. It is also the connecting station for passenger travelling by train to Leeds and Bradford Airport utilising a dedicated bus shuttle service from the large station carpark.

Frontage, Menston station 
 Like so many station buildings, they have either been sold off or are leased to private users. In this case, the 1865 Midland built station building at Menston is now used for child care. It's nice to see that their logo includes a totem and that it even in the correct colour for the location of the station!

333003, NT 15.33 Leeds-Ilkley (2V42, 4L), Guiseley station 
 333003 drifts into Guisley station forming the 15.33 Leeds to Ilkley. I am not sure if I like the look of these class 333 units, I suspect that when they were introduced in 2000 they were the ultimate in modern design and cut quite a look. They were extended in 2007 from being three-car to four-car units.

66170, 16.25 Hedon Road Sidings-Masborough, Goole station 
 As per the nuclear flask train the previous day at Cark station, we arrived at Goole as the train was approaching at speed! Lukily the camera settings were correct grab a going-away shot of 66170 leading the 16.25 Hedon Road to Masborough steel train. It is seen crossing the level crossing immediately west of Goole station.

158797, NT 16.30 Sheffield-Hull (2R75, 4L), Goole station 
 Northern's 158797 arrives at Goole station working the 16.30 Sheffield to Hull. The train is just crossing the level crossing that crosses Goole's Boothferry Road and causes so much congestion when the barriers are lowered.

Goole signal box (NE, 1909) 
 Goole signal box stands at the level crossing on Boothferry Road in the centre of the town just next to the station. It is a busy box with the regular passage of trains a good few of which are freight. The box was built by the North Eastern Railway in 1909 and is one of their S4 types. It has had no levers and has controled no semaphores for some time being converted to an NX (or entrance-exit) panel in 1975.

91117, GR 16.39 Peterborough-York (5X25, 81L), Grove Road Crossing SK717791 
 Against a dramatic black sky that was packed with electrical energy, 91117 'West Riding Limited' races north leading the 16.39 Peterborough to York with a reporting number of 5X25. This odd start point and number was due to the ensuing chaos caused by a huge storm affecting York and Leeds earlier in the day meaning trains were all out of place even some hours later. The train is seen approaching Grove Crossing just south of Retford.

91105, GR 15.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London Kings Cross, started from Newcastle (1E21, 91L), Grove Road Crossing SK717791 
 With the overgrown CCTV cameras looking at Grove level crossing just south of Retford, 91195, wearing its new LNER logo, propels the 15.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross. Despite its advertised start point, this service did not originate from Edinburgh but from Newcastle still managing a 91 minute late arrival into London. This was due to a massive thunder storm that wiped out signalling in the York and Leeds areas earlier in the day that caused absolute chaos. As can be seen in this picture, the weather was looking a touch dramatic here in Nottinghamshire!

Grove Road signal box (GN, c.1880) 
 Grove Road level crossing is situated on a minor road that leaves the A638 (the old A1 Great North Road) just south of Retford. The ex signal box is a Great Northern Type 1 box dating from c.1880. Today, it is closed but for emergency use. The crossing is monitored by CCTV from Ranskill. Despite virtual closure, the box is in good condition and retains many of it GN features and a wooden nameboard.
