I had the intention of making an early morning trip to Euston to see the steam-hauled Cheshireman charter but, unbeknown to me, it had been cancelled the previous day at extremely late notice. Not realising this until I arrived at Euston to find no charter ECS at platform I made do with the two sleepers and another short visit to King's Cross.

GBRf's 92043 'Andy Withers' sits at the head of the up Lowland Sleeper service that had arrived at Euston some time before I arrived at about 06.45. The sleeper service is composed of two trains that come together at Carstairs Junction in the form of the 23.30 ex Glasgow and 23.42 ex Edinburgh. There were still many passengers aboard the sleeper service who were permitted to sleep/snooze/eat breakfast for a good length of time before vacating the train by about 07.30.

92038, 06.14 Wembley IC Depot-London Euston (0M11, RT), London Euston station
Caught in the early morning shade 92038 waits to back on to the Lowland Sleeper service and take the stock back as the 0M11 06.14 to Wembley Yard where the stock will be serviced and prepared for one the Sunday night down sleeper services. To avoid waking the still-slumbering passengers on the train the light engine will remain in this position for an hour or so before backing the final few feet to the stock.

92014, CS 20.45 Inverness, 21.43 Aberdeen & 19.50 Fort William (1M16, 16E), London Euston station
As is often the case the sleeper services arrive early as pathing is generous and with the passengers in no rush to exit the train. Led by 92014 the 1M16 Highland service arrives at Euston some sixteen minutes ahead of schedule just catching some morning sunshine. As with the Lowland service that arrived about an hour and a half earlier passengers are allowed to remain in the seat or berths for some time as they come to! I like observing the passengers who do alight on arrival. It's reminiscent of a night flight arrival at an airport but with none of the bother of baggage reclaim, passport control and customs!

Caledonian liveried 92014 comes to a halt at Euston platform fifteen with the 1M16 up Highland Sleeper service. The Lowland service that arrived nearly two hours earlier is composed of two trains that come together at Carstairs Junction. The Highland service is made up of three trains, the 20.45 from Inverness, the 21.43 from Aberdeen and, finally, the 19.50 from Fort William but they converge at Edinburgh station with all this activity taking place between midnight and two in the morning. Hopefully, all the shunting and movement of trains does not wake the passengers who are, hopefully by this time, fast asleep!

Two LNER DVTs are nicely lit by the early morning sunshine penetrating the glasswork of King's Cross' roof. To the left 82215 will be at the rear of 08.33 1D06 service to Leeds. This will be not far behind the first down Leeds service that is just leaving with the 1D05 08.03 train. I hope that the passengers on board the superb Mk. IV coaches appreciate their superior comfort compared to the ironing boards that pass for seats on the Azumas (and most modern trains for that matter!).

Looking absolutely superb in the morning summer sunshine 91107 'Skyfall'. stands just outside of King's Cross' train shed at the head of the 1D06 08.33 service to Leeds. These trains really are absolutely superb and represent what I consider to be the best that BREL produced in their twilight. years. I photographed this celebrity Class 91 at Edinburgh Waverley just after it had been named back in 2013, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30051098278/x170458-16-17-newcraighall-glenrothes

The blunt end of a Class 91 is not its most attractive feature! However, it was only ever designed for occasional use and when hauling freight services as was the original plan for the class. 91107 'Skyfall is seen at King's Cross waiting for passengers to board and then to work the 08.33 service to Leeds. Framed through the open door and window of the leading Mk. IV coach is the LNER logo on the flank of 801226. that will work the 08.30 train to Edinburgh.

The first up Leeds service of the day arrives at King's Cross led by DVT 82211. It is coming into platform two with 801230 waiting at platform one to work the 09.06 train to York. Apologies for the poor quality of this digital image, and a number of others for that matter, but my regular and, until now that is, dependable Canon GX1 Mk.III is in for repair forcing me to use an emergency purchased Sony DSC-WX500. Whilst it seems a reasonable budget camera with a good zoom it cannot handle what I expect of my equipment but needs be needs must I suppose!

Having just worked up from Leeds a little earlier, 91101 'Flying Scotsman' will return leading the 1D07 09.03 service. Next to it, 801230 will leave just after the IC225 working the 09.06 to York. In the last half half and hour that I spent at King's Cross I observed no fewer than three IC225 sets in operation. I remember saying back in 2019 when the Azumas entered service that the IC225s would be sorely missed but here we are some five years later and they are still very much in frontline service!
