I took in a morning hour or so at York station whilst the wife prepared her face and later in the day I went to the National Railway Museum.

43367, GR 06.26 Edinburgh Waverley-London King's Cross (1E03), York station
On arrival at York station following the short morning walk from our hotel, I was greeted by the 06.26 Edinburgh to King's Cross HST standing at platform three. At the rear of the formation was 43367 'Deltic 50 1955-2005' in its East Coast livery. When initially named by GNER in 2005 it simply wore vinyl graphics that committed the '50' part of the name receiving its attractive cast plates later.

66742 'ABP Port of Immingham Centenary 1912-2012' avoids York station rejoining the mainline at York Yard South Junction. The GBRf Class 66 is leading the 06.23 Tyne Coal Yard to Drax power station loaded coal train. 185145, TP 08.28 Middlesborough-Manchester Airport (1P23), York station
185145 storms away from work station working the 08.28 Middlesborough to Manchester Airport TPE service. These units are powerful and are blessed with excellent acceleration that is useful on turns with a lot of stops. However, when driven with a little spirit their fuel consumption is very poor. Indeed, TPE has introduced an enhanced driver training programme aimed to encourage staff to operate them in a more economical manner in an effort to reduce fuel costs.

Completing its journey from King's Cross 91114 'Durham Cathedral' arrives at York two and a quarter hours after it departed. These services were dubbed the 'York Fasts' back in the late 1980s and became synonymous with the final years of Deltic operations.

20305 & 66427, stabled, York Parcel Sidings
I was half expecting some English Electric action on this particular morning at York station as 20305 was sitting in York's Parcel Sidings with its engine running. However, it stayed firmly sandwiched between 66427 and the York signalling centre during the hour or so that I was at the station.

185110, TP 07.15 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough (1E81), York station
185110 and another unidentified unit arrive at York station from the west working the 07.15 Liverpool to Scarborough TPE train. This service has taken longer to get to York than, for example, the last few services that I photographed such as those from King's Cross and Edinburgh. Even though it's distance is a lot less at just under one hundred miles I suppose the number of stops and the winding route through the Pennines contributes to its much lower average speed.

D1023, preserved, NRM
As a young spotter in the West Country during the mid-1970s, I managed to photograph some Westerns, for example..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/C296307204/x4-westbury-27-03-76 but D1023 'Western Fusileer' was a member of the dwindling members of the class that avoided my lens! Here it is resplendent in its BR blue livery now preserved as part of the national collection. The locomotive is famous for being one of those involved in the final ever Western-hauled train on BR on 26.02.77, the fabled 'Western Tribute' charter.

3717, preserved, NRM
Another of the Great Western's finest is seen preserved inside York's National Railway Museum. Initially numbered 3440 'City of Truro' became 3717 in 1911 after a partial re-build by the GWR at Swindon. I am not going to get into the 'did it-didn't it' debate as to whether it was the first locomotive to reach one hundred miles per hour now...so much has been written on the subject already. However, what a fine-looking machine dating from a time just two years after Queen Victoria died!

31018, preserved, NRM
As D5500 the TOPS numbered 31018 was the first built example of one of British Railways' more successful first-generation diesel designs that is after the entire class was re-engined from 1964! The early class members were delivered with marker disks rather than having a headcode panel and were dubbed skinheads. Back in 1978 I photographed it working on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway two years after BR had withdrawn it from service in July 1976, see....... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25492182204/d5500-freight-goathland-station

D200, preserved, NRM
D200 was delivered new to Stratford on 14.03.58 and was the first member of the class hauling its début on an express train from Liverpool Street to Norwich just over a month later on 18.04.58. Today, it takes many months of testing, commissioning and staff training before new stock enters service from delivery further emphasising what a rush British Railways were in at this time when they were dashing to eradicate steam. Towards the end of its life, as 40122 became to doyen of the class being repainted into green livery largely retained to haul enthusiasts specials well after the rest of its classmates had been withdrawn from service. It is seen here at the National Railway Museum undergoing some restoration.

87001, preserved, NRM
87001 was the first built of thirty-six members of the class that entered service with BR in 1973 and were the first set locomotives that carried TOPS numbers from new. This rather dark photograph shows the preserved locomotive at the National Railway Museum carrying its 'Stephenson' plates as opposed to the 'Royal Scot' set that it can also be found wearing.

150271, NR 15.11 York-Leeds (2C41), York station
Taken from York station's footbridge 150271 is seen prior to working the 15.11 Northern service to Leeds via Harrogate. As a traveller on this almost circular route, I would have the choice of either a class 150, as seen here, or a nodding donkey Pacer, which one would I prefer; I am not sure?

With its former operator's livery, National Express East Coast, looking decidedly tatty 43313 stands at York station at the rear of the 1Y38 16.01 service to King's Cross. The stock of the HST service is composed of a hired-in East Midlands Trains set that does not exactly match the power car paint scheme!

In the foreground is the metallic grey/blue livery as applied by the highly unpopular National Express East Coast after it took over from GNER in December 2007. It is being carried by HST power car 43320. This power car, as 43120 along with 43121, were designated as 'spares' when delivered to the Eastern Region in November 1977 with neither assigned to a 254 set. 66716, 10.37 Butterwell opencast-Cottam power station, York station
66716 'Locomotive & Carriage Institution Centenary 1911-2011' hauls another loaded coal train south to feed the fuel-hungry Cottam power station just to the east of Retford through York station. It is leading the 10.37 ex Butterwell opencast loading pad that is located on a short spur off the ECML just north of the town of Ashington. With the ever-dwindling number of coal-fired power stations as part of the decarbonising agenda then trains like this are set to become pretty rare; get them while you can!
