Another of the Great Western's finest is seen preserved inside York's National Railway Museum. Initially numbered 3440 'City of Truro' became 3717 in 1911 after a partial re-build by the GWR at Swindon. I am not going to get into the 'did it-didn't it' debate as to whether it was the first locomotive to reach one hundred miles per hour now...so much has been written on the subject already. However, what a fine-looking machine dating from a time just two years after Queen Victoria died!
