87001 was the first built of thirty-six members of the

class that entered service with BR in 1973 and were the first set locomotives that carried TOPS numbers from new. This rather dark photograph shows the preserved locomotive at the National Railway Museum carrying its 'Stephenson' plates as opposed to the 'Royal Scot' set that it can also be found wearing.
