Whilst my wife and son spent an hour or two spending money on fripperies I went off to Paddington. I was keen to get some more photograph prior to the obstructive wiring to the southern side of the station being installed. A pleasing surprise was the arrival and rapid departure of the Network Rail NMT HST.

43094, GW 13.30 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads, Class 165s, Class 180 & Class 332, London Paddington station
A typically Great Western scene at Paddington station finds a number of different classes of train waiting on the blocks. In the foreground, at platform one, is 43094 that will soon work the 13.30 to Bristol Temple Meads adjacent to a Turbo unit with another example on platform four. Beyond that is Class 180 Adelante keeping the best tradition of the Western Region alive with their hydraulic transmission and dubious reliability! Finally, beyond that is a Heathrow Express Class 332 and another HST.

Station clock, platform 1, Paddington station
Looking more akin to a pulpit in a great cathedral the triple faced clock on Paddington's station platform one sits in a lofty position halfway along the platform. In the space below is the famous statue of the stations designed I.K Brunel sitting on a plinth admiring his railway cathedral so the pulpit comparison a little aerier seems to make sense! Just visible behind Brunel's statue is an information board about Crossrail. Apparently, whenever it opens, no way behind schedule, this point will be where passengers will access its platforms with the line running parallel to the station under Eastbourne Terrace.

IKB statue & Crossrail exhibition, platform 1, Paddington station
At some time in the future, with the date becoming a moving feast, Crossrail 'may' open! If and when it does passengers will access Paddington's platforms through these ornate arches to the station below and behind. Indeed, the artist impressions on the display board illustrate what this will look like. IK Brunel sits patiently waiting for this opening but given the news emerging from Crossrail, despite their optimistic announcements and the TV programmes, indicates huge delays pushing opening back in terms of years rather than months!

165134, GW 13.18 London Paddington-Great Bedwyn (1K60) & 332007, HX 12.57 Heathrow-London Paddington (1Y53), London Paddington station
In the throat of Paddington station 165134 gests away with the 1K60 13.18 to Great Bedwyn. Meanwhile, looking smart in its Vodafone 4G livery Heathrow Express' 332007 arrives with the 12.57 from Heathrow terminal four. Northern Rail operates some very similar units classified as Class 333s with HX operating just thirteen 332 sets configured in either four (nine sets of) of five (five sets of) cars.

360201, HC 12.54 Heathrow-London Paddington (2Y38), London Paddington station
As well as Heathrow Express operating to and from Paddington to the airport Heathrow Connect (HC) also operates a small fleet of Desiro units. HC is jointly run by Heathrow Express and Great Western Railway and started its operations nine years ago in 2005. It offers a cheaper but slower service between the airport and Central London using the slow lines and with some intermediate stops. 360201 arrives at Paddington with the 12.54 from Heathrow.

43014, 11.04 Exeter Riverside-London Paddington NMT (1Q19), London Paddington station
Catching a welcome burst of full sunshine the New Measurement Train (NMT) enters Paddington as the 1Q19 11.04 ex Exeter Riverside. This set is being led by 43014 with its buffer beams indicating that it has seen service on the ECML during the late 1980s as a surrogate DVT. The power car was released into service on the GWML in the autumn of 1976. I have other photographs of this set in much earlier years on the site, an example can be found at ..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/23615755004/hst-set-253007-arrives-bristol-temple

43062, 13.29 London Paddington-Derby RTC NMT (1Q21), London Paddington station
The NMT aka 'Flying Banana' has just arrived at Paddington station after running up from Exeter Riverside. the crew are quickly changing ends and making ready for a departure so as yo avoid blocking a platform for too long. 43062 'John Armitt' will lead the 1Q21 13.29 departure for Derby RTC where the NMT is based. Adjacent to the yellow train is a far more sombre and unidentified First Great Western power car that has arrived with a service from the West Country. Being on this side of Paddington station it is probably ex Hereford or Cheltenham.

43014 & 43062, 13.29 London Paddington-Derby RTC NMT (1Q21) & Class 332, HX 13.35 London Paddington-Heathrow (1T57), London Paddington station
Just twelve minutes after it arrived as the 1Q20 from Exeter Riverside the NMT gets away from Paddington as the 1Q21 13.29 to Derby RTC via Oxford, Banbury, Coventry, Nuneaton (reversal) and Leicester. The bright yellow test train has five Mk. III coaches packed with various measuring and monitoring equipment with 43014 at the rear with 43062 'John Armitt' leading. As it leaves an unidentified Heathrow Express Class 332 is also leaving with the 13.35 to Heathrow Terminal four.

Class 43s & Class 165, GW 13.50 London Paddington-Oxford (1D39), London Paddington station
An iconic scene that is, unfortunately, set to change in the coming few months as the electrification of the GWML continues. Whilst the wiring has reached the northern side of the station the south side is totally unobscured and largely as it has been since opening in in 1854. In this view from the passenger footbridge, HSTs dominate the vista as they have done for nearly forty years now. Sitting and looking a little overwhelmed by everything is a Turbo Class 165 that is about to depart for Oxford as the 13.50 1D39 service.

43165, GW unidentified down working, Paddington station
Passengers make their way along platform seven to find their seats aboard an unidentified down First Great Western service. The train will be powered at the rear by 43165 that was one of the later power cars introduced from the summer of 1982 to work the NE/SW services. In this particular case, this power car was part of set 253043. Notice the brilliant shine on the platform slabs reflecting every bead of light that falls on them, the buffers have certainly been doing their stuff here on platform seven!

By now all this should have been a thing of the past as the GWML should be nearing completion and nearly operational but the inevitable and costly delays mean that scenes such as this will be about for a year or so yet.

332006, HX 14.10 London Paddington-Heathrow (1T60) & 165112, GW 13.01 Oxford-London Paddington (1P45), London Paddington station
In the style stakes, the Heathrow Express Class 332s are winners! With their huge curved screens and stylish light clusters they certainly look the part so it's s shame that they only operate between Paddington and Heathrow. 332006 waits at Paddington to work the 14.10 service to Heathrow Terminal four. The Turbo unit next to it in the form of 165112 is from another era of design and looks decidedly aged by comparison. 165122 has just arrived with the 1P45 13.01 from Oxford.

Passengers make their way to their train in the form of the 14.30 Paddington to Weston-super-Mare at platform seven of the London terminus. First Great Western's 43144 will power the rear of the train running as 1C18 to the Somerset seaside resort. As part of set 253037 this power car was introduced to supplement the Western Region's HST provision as they opened up services to the far West Country from 1979 onwards.

Praed Street entrance, London Paddington station
The entrance to Paddington station known to many who do not arrive and depart by the tube is via the short entrance ramp off Praed Street. It was commonly referred to as Carriage Road getting its name from it being the only way that road transport would enter the station. Indeed, until the station was remodelled in the 1980s it was where parcels, newspaper and taxi traffic entered the station with the vehicles actually driving on to a wide platform between trains. Praed Street is one of many eponymous roads in London being named after William Praed who was the chairman of the company which built the canal basin which lies just to the north. Notice the GWR's insignia fully restored at the apex of the arch.

Side view from London Street, Paddington station
A side of Paddington station rarely viewed by passers-by is the one seen from London Street that leads to the new taxi rank at the far end of the northern side of the station. The large lettering atop the building is a slightly later typeface used during the period 1934 to 1942 that is similar but not the same as the commonly associated Swindon Egyptian version used a little earlier.

Hilton Hotel & Praed Street, Paddington station
Unlike many of the fine station termini in London, Paddington does not boast a grandiose frontage for all to see and admire. Similar to St. Pancras a short distance away along Marylebone and Euston Roads Paddington is fronted by a hotel. Built in a classical and French-chateau style, the hotel was opened in the summer of 1854 by Prince Albert and was named The Great Western Hotel. It operated under this name until 1983 when it was sold off by BR to be comprehensively refurbished and opened as the Hilton London Paddington in 2001.

GWR roundel, Hilton Hotel, from Praed Street, Paddington station
The GWR roundel as seen here on the front of the former Great Western Hotel (now the Hilton London Paddington) is the later type dating from the period 1934 to 1942. It is colloquially referred to as the 'shirtbutton' monogram and was used throughout the company from buildings such as this to locomotives and letter headings.

21392, a Circle Line working, Paddington TfL station
The London Underground network at Paddington is complicated with the convergence of a number of lines. Being close to the surface for much of its route the Circle and District lines were constructed using the cut and cover method (as opposed to deep boring) with some stretches operating in the open air. Paddington's station (originally named Praed Street) is partially open and this enables photographs of tube trains to be taken. A relatively new S7 number 21392 arrives into the station with a Circle Line working via Victoria.

5578, Circle Line working to Edgware Road (Paddington-Edgware Road), Paddington TfL station
With the introduction of the S stock approaching its competition, the withdrawal of the 1970 C Stock continues apace. I was pleased to see car 5578 leading set 072 at Paddington and promptly took the Circle Line working the short distance to Edgware Road. This could well be my last journey in a C Stock train.

21348, a Hammersmith & City Line working to Hammersmith, Edgware Road TfL station
S Stock car 21348 leads a Hammersmith and City line service into Edgware Road station. Whilst these units that were introduced two years ago represent a major step forward for Londoners in terms of their travelling comfort they do not have the same character as the stock that they have replaced. However, it's easy for me to say that as I am only an occasional user of TfL underground trains!

An S7 unit arrives into the sunlight at Edgware Road TfL station with a Hammersmith and City Line service to Barking. I took this unit, lead by car 21325, only as far as Baker Street where I changed for a Bakerloo Line train to Oxford Circus in order to meet my wife and son for a late lunch in John Lewis'.
