85. ECML HST farewell, Let's go Round Again-21.12.19

I cannot believe that some forty-two years after their introduction on the ECML in 1977 that I have gone out, along with thousands of other enthusiasts, many of whom were not even born in Silver Jubilee Year, to see the final run of this iconic train. Full credit to the team at Craigentinny depot who painted the power cars and those at Doncaster who painted the stock into its BR 'as launched' livery for the final four-day railtour that covered all the routes that the East Coast sets worked on. There is talk that this set will be retained and maintained for railtour use; I'm sure that it will prove to be a hit. Who would have thought that the flying banana would have taken on this cult status back in the 1970s when us more seasoned spotters never even gave them a second look resenting their arrival as they ousted other classic locomotives!

82213 & 91129, GR 10.04 York-London King`s Cross (1Y82, 2L), Gill`s Crossing
In lovely winter light, DVT 82213 leads the 10.04 York to King's Cross past Offord Cluny between Huntingdon and St. Neots. The photograph is taken from a popular local footpath called Gill's crossing that leads from the village down to the Great Ouse that, on this day, was flooding following some very heavy rain.

91113, GR 11.30 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S15, 4L), Gill`s Crossing
With the spire of St. Peter's church in Offord D'Arcy silhouetted against the winter sky, 91129 leads the 1S15 11.30 King's Cross to Edinburgh. I was surprised that this particular service has not gone over to Azuma so was not quite ready when it appeared around the reverse curve on the approach to this location at Gill's crossing.

Grand Central's 180104 works the 11.27 King's Cross to Sunderland through the reverse curves at Offord Cluny in Bedfordshire. Following Hull Trains' imminent disposal to their class 180s, GC will be the sole operator of these troublesome units with the rest facing an uncertain future.

82218, 91106 & 91111, GR 10.45 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A25, 1L), Gill`s Crossing
This is another working that I was surprised was still being operated by a Mk. IV 225 set assuming that an Azuma would be handling it by now, the 1A25 10.45 Leeds to St. King's Cross. In this photograph, the service is seen passing Gill's Crossing in the village Offord Cluny with 82218 leading. Close examination of the rear of the train reveals two Class 91s. 91106 is tucked inside running with its pantograph down with the power coming from 91111 'For the Fallen' at the very back. I am not sure if 91106 had failed but the train was running to time arriving at its destination only a minute adrift.

82200 & 91104, GR 09.00 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E08, 2L), Gill`s Crossing
82200 leads the front of the 09.00 Edinburgh to King's Cross with 91104 powering at the rear. The train is passing the village of Offord Cluny in rural Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately, the train is now front-lit as the sun has just gone round too far to illuminate the side but not yet far enough around to light the other side from the western side of the foot crossing; things happen slowly on the day before the winter solstice!

82220 & 91101, GR 09.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E09, 2L), Gill`s Crossing
82220 passes Gill's crossing in the village of Offord Cluny leading the 09.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross. 91101 'Flying Scotsman' is doing the all the work at the rear of the train. Offord Cluny's Church of All Saints fifteenth century tower can just be seen to the far right of the image.

91128, GR 12.35 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D14, 4L), Gill`s Crossing
The 12.25 London King's Cross to Leeds 1D14 has yet to go over to Azuma with it still being formed by a Mk. IV set, on this winter day led by 91128 'InterCity 50'. The train is seen passing Gill's Crossing, a popular walking route in the village of Offord Cluny. Ironically, as it is so popular, I suspect that it is one that will soon be closed as Network Rail continues on its seemingly obsessive mission to close all access points. 91128 was one of the last class 91s to be released into traffic at the start of 1991 meaning it is coming up for thirty years old, I wonder, at the time of writing, if it will celebrate this landmark birthday but in the hands of another operator and on a different route?

801110 & 801106, GR 11.45 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A28, 4L), Gill`s Crossing
With Offord Cluny's All Saints church tower to the right of the image, two Azumas pass the village with the 11.45 Leeds to London King's Cross. 801110 and 801106 still look smart in their LNER livery but running two five-car sets coupled up cannot be the most effective way to operate a train service, I suspect that sometime in the future those who procured and ordered these trains may rue the day that the decision to order 'short sets' was made?

91129, GR 13.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S18, RT), Gill`s Crossing
Catching the low afternoon sunshine partially obscured by some troublesome cloud, 91129 heads north with the 13.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley 1S18 express. Despite the well-documented reliability problems that have come in phases throughout their thirty-year life, the class 91s are strong, powerful and fast locomotives that have provided good service on the ECML. I am sure that there is life still left in them and the superb Mk. IV stock and that another operator will take them on.

91132, GR 13.03 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D15, 10L), Gill`s Crossing
Throughout railway history, there have always been cases of when some locomotives have been seen by staff as being unlucky or having some sort of curse. 91132 is one such locomotive with it leading both the trains involved in the Hatfiled (2000) and Great Heck (2001) accidents. So in the traditions of the industry, when it was rebuilt in 2001 it took the number 91132 rather than 91123 (from 91023) as it should have done thus leaving a gap in the sequence. The locomotive is seen leading the 1D15 13.03 King's Cross to Leeds past the Cambridgeshire village of Offord Cluny.

180105 'Ashley Jackson - The Yorkshire Artist' heads past Offord Cluny between Huntingdon and St. Neots working the Grand Central 13.18 King's Cross to Sunderland. Whilst Hull Trains are busy disposing of their class 180s with them proving to be extremely unreliable, Grand Central's entire fleet is now composed of these 2001 built five-car sets.

43112 & 43006, final leg of Let`s go Round Again, 11.01 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1Z43), Gill`s Crossing
Specially repainted for the occasion by the teams at Craigentinny and Doncaster depots, HST set EC56 with power cars 43112 and 43206 look absolutely superb as they operate the final leg of the charity Let's go Round Again four-day tour of the routes formally operated by East Coast HSTs. This final leg, running as the 1Z43 11.01 Leeds to King's Cross, is seen on the up slow line passing Offord Cluny just south of Huntingdon. It passed with a crescendo of horn blowing and, as can be seen, a crowded cab! A bit of renumbering added to the authenticity of the event with the front power car in this image, 43312 running with its original number E43112 with the correct set number 254029 applied to the front end. The rear power car was an early Western Region power car from 253003 that carried W43003, as an LNER unit it was numbered 43206 for many years.

43006, final leg of Let`s go Round Again, 11.01 Leeds-London King`s-Cross (1Z43), Gill`s Crossing
A photograph that could have been taken in the 1970s or 1980s (apart from the electrification equipment and it being on the ECML as opposed to the GWML) shows the early Western Region HST power car W43003 passing Offord Cluny. W43003 (ex of 253003) is seen, along with an InterCity 125 liveried coach, at the rear of the final leg of the Let's go Round Again charity railtour to bring the curtain down on ECML HST operations. Unfortunately, control had deemed it appropriate to put the train on the up slow from Huntingdon into King's Cross so there was little fast running on this final run. I was very surprised to be joined by about ten people at this spot meaning it was a little cramped and that prevented me from getting a 'going-away' photograph. A number of us commented on how bizarre it was that here were all gathered to witness this event over forty years after the introduction of the HSTs when we resented their arrival. After the train had passed, a fellow enthusiast cheerily walked away saying 'see you all in twenty years' time for the Azuma farewell!'
