78. Trip to Knaresborough-13.11.19

A very early start marked a great trip to Knaresborough with Mike in order to collect a car for work. After travelling from Northampton via Birmingham, Derby, Doncaster and York we had a delightful drive home in a 1999 Citroen Saxo! Mike and I spent an hour or so at York station fully expecting to see all of the new order trains in service. However, we were both surprised that very little had changed. Only two Azumas were seen and, just as we were leaving, one of the TPE new Nova 1 units follwoed by one of their loco. hauled sets on test. There were still plenty of Pacers too!

350125, LN 06.05 Northampton-Crewe & Rugeley Trent Valley (9K10, 2L), Birmingham New Street station
Having arrived at Birmingham New Street, 350125 is about to be split from another Desiro as the 06.05 Northampton to Crewe and Rugeley Trent Valley. Mike and I had travelled on this 9K10 service from Northampton with the first vestiges of daylight seen as we entered Birmingham.

220023, XC 07.30 Birmingham New Street-Newcastle (1E42, 2L), York station
The 07.30 Birmingham New Street to Newcastle Central has just arrived at York's platform nine. Mike and I had just alighted from 220023 that we had traveled on from its starting point. Fair play to CrossCountry on this occasion, the train was on-time, the wifi was as good, it was clean and not overcrowded. However, the trip was marred somewhat by a pretty miserable guard, seen getting back on his train, who got impatient with me when I was sorting out the split tickets for his inspection; we all can have a bad day I suppose!

800105, VT 10.02 York-London King`s Cross (1Y82, 1L), York station
In lovely late autumn sunshine, a nice new and shiny Azuma waits at York station. 800105 will soon form and work the 10.02 from York to King's Cross. I must say that the livery applied to the LNER operated class 800s is infinitely better than the drab green applied to Great Western's units.

68017, stabled, York station
Looking a little grubby maybe as a result of undertaking some railhead treatemnt workings, 68017 'Hornet' sits stabled at York station. Whilst it was stabled, for some reason, its engines were on and idling that seemed very wasteful of resources and something that the railway could take a lead on with regard to lowering of its CO2 emissions.

142012, NT 08.50 Doncaster-York ECS (5Y90), class 142 & 142091, stabled, York station
Pacers have been a common sight at York for thirty years now. By the end of next month, they should be a thing of the past but due to the late arrival of their replacements, I suspect that they will be around for a bit longer yet. To the left, 142012 has just arrived with the 08.50 Doncaster to York ECS working. Meanwhile, over in the bay stabling platform two further units are seen between services. The one nearest the camera is 142091, a unit that I have photographed at York many times.

91129, VT 08.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh Waverley (1S07, 3L), York station
At the time of writing, a number of these fine BR designed and BREL Crewe built powerful and fast electric locomotives have been withdrawn from service due to the arrival of the Azumas. Whilst the cutting torch is not beckoning just yet, they face an uncertain future with various operators expressing an interest in taking them but with nothing definite as yet. Here at York, 91129 pauses whilst working the 08.00 King's Cross to Edinburgh.

43296, VT 07.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E05, 25L), York station
Taken from York's famous footbridge that spans the entire width of the station, 43296 leads the 07.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross hst service into the station. At a time when there are many Azumas in service, it's puzzling as to why a HST is still working this service. The front of the power car is looking a little tired but this is hardly surprising given that it is in its final month or so of service.

By now, I would have expected a scene like this at York to be confined to history! To the left, the 07.30 Edingburgh to King's Cross HST, with 43272 bringing up the rear, waits at platform four. The two consecutively numbered Pacers are 142012 that will soon work the 10.15 to Sheffield and 142011 that has just terminated with the 09.24 from Leeds. Notice that the HST power car has non-standard numbers that are larger than the usual ones.

68020, 09.00 Scarborough-York light engine (0B61), York station
The driver has just shut 68020 'Reliance' down after terminating at York's platform two. It has just completed a light engine run as 0B61, the 09.00 from Scarborough. This run will have been in connection with the troubled introduction of TransPennine Express' locomotive-hauled sets.

155334, NT 10.50 York-Hull (2R94, 4E), York station
The curve of the train matches the curvature of York's fine roof in this photograph. 153334 was attached to a Pacer and the pair are seen about to leave the station with the 2R49 10.50 to Hull. It is scenes like this that make York one of my favourite stations for taking pictures in being architecturally dramatic, varied and full of interest.

Pacer 142071 sits at the back of the 10.50 to Hull at York station with 153334 at the front. It will soon leave platform six heading south-east to its destination. In theory, in seven week's time, this elderly and much-hated 'bus on wheels' as they are dubbed, should be out of service and heading for an appointment with the cutter's torch! However, late delivery of their replacements means that Northern have had to apply for special dispensation for them to operate beyong 31.12.19.

Destination card, 09.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S09, 1L), York station
These paper destination cards have been a feature of the Mk. IV coaches and have been in use on the ECML since the stock's introduction in 1989. Despite having a number of refurbishments in their thirty-year life, the coaches still have no matrix passenger information screens either on the outside or the inside of the stock. When they are withdrawn from the ECML it will be interesting to see if their new operators (there could be two who will make use of this excellent stock) continue to this somewhat archaic but perfectly effective way of informing passengers. This particular destination card was in the window of the 09.00 King's Cross the Edinburgh photographed during its pause at York station.

43311, VT 08.30 Edinburgh Waverley-London King`s Cross (1E07, 5L), York station
This is the fourth HST that was seen at York within an hour, the Azuma 'take-over' appears not to have taken place just yet! 43311 leads the 08.30 Edingburgh to King's Cross into York's platform four. This power car has been operating on the ECML since its introduction exactly forty year's ago. Back in 1979, it carried the power car number 43111 and was part of set 254028.

66713, 09.44 Drax-Redcar bulk terminal (4N05), York station
66713 'Forest City' comes to a halt at York's platform five with the 09.44 Drax power station to Redcar bulk terminal coal empties. Despite the belief that Drax has converted to biomass, this is not quite true. It still burns some coal co-firing it with biomass. Thus, there are still some regular merry-go-round style coal trains serving the huge power station with GBRF operating them. I am a little confused as to why freight trains such as this persist in coming through York station rather than using the relief lines that by-pass it to the west. This particular working was held at the down starter colour light for some time as various late-running passenger workings came in and out of the station. If there is anybody with local knowledge who can enlighten me as to why the relief lines are not used more regularly, please advise!

802212, TP 10.02 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street (9M08, 35L), York station
Just look at the shine in the nose cone of TransPennine Express' Nova 1 as it reflects York station! Five-car 802212 pauses at the station forming the 10.02 Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street. This is my first photograph of one of their new smart new units that their web site says are called Nova because.... 'We wanted to give our trains a name that reflects the positive changes and explosion of energy that will truly transform rail travel for customers and so, they are known as our Nova fleet. The word represents what we are trying to achieve over the next few years, embodying fast-paced energy and change as we take the North further together'......hmm?

170472, NT 11.11 York-Leeds (2C33, 11L), York station
Passengers board 170472 at York station. The ex ScotRail unit was going to work the 11.11 to Leeds via Harrogate that Mike and I took as far as Knaresborough. We both commented on the smart and comfortable interior of the 'refreshed' three-car DMU. The seats were roomy and comfortable and the train rode well. However, the old problem of vibration and noise from the under-frame mounted engines on the class 172s was still everpresent!

170472, NT 11.11 York-Leeds (2C33, 11L), Knaresborough station
Having alighted from 172472 at Knaresborough, Mike watches it leave the station and cross the magnificent viaduct that was opened in 1851. A clearer view of the viaduct can be seen at.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/28633907404/pacer-13-11-york-leeds-2c33-knaresborough Most of this route still operates absolute block with a number of signal boxes having control of the line. Knaresborough's box can be seen to the right of the rear cab of the 11.11 York to Leeds service, being built into the end of the row of terraced cottages

Former Goldsborough signal box & station (LNER, 1942)
I spotted this structure on the way past earlier in the day from the train thinking that it could be a former signal box. As we were passing on our journey home we stopped for a further look. Indeed, it is a former signal box of LNER design dating from 1942 and, being built during wartime, is of a somewhat austere design! It is attached to the former station building at Goldsborough, a small village just to the east of Knaresborough. The station closed to passengers in 1958, as was all too often the case when it was too distant from the settlement it professed to serve. The box was built to serve a rail-served cold food storage facility built by the government during the war. The facility continued in use for a number of years after 1945 before closing and then being demolished to be replaced by the modern warehousing as seen in the background of this photograph. The station building and signal box are now in use as a private residence complete with a number of solar panels!

Tickets, Northampton-Knaresborough
As usual, I kept costs under control for our single trip to Knaresborough by using split ticketting. I used a new website, as recommended by Rail's Barry Doe, www.traintickets.com and found it quick and easy to use. As usual, on a journey such as this, the saving was substantial, even more so for Mike as he was able to use his railcard. However, one thing that it cannot do is maintain seat reservations when the ticket splits en route often necessitating a change of seats as we had to do on the Voyager when we got to Chesterfield.
