A trip to York with my 'spotting' teacher from school Mr. Brush. We travelled on the Percy Boy's Club special that we picted up at Bath. Unusually, the train ran via the GWML to Didcot where it took the West and North Junctions to Oxford to Birmingham. There it avoided the station by taking Landor Street Junction to continue north to Derby and Sheffield.

D1028 & class 52, awaiting cutting, Swindon Works
Passing Swindon Works at speed sees two class 52 Westerns still awaiting final cutting. It looks as though they have been pretty much stripped of all their internal components with just their instantly recognisable hulks remaining. The leading 52 is D1028 'Western Hussar' identified by the daubing of 'THE END' on its flank. I have not been able to identify the other Western, if anybody can help, I would appreciate it. As for, what looks to be, a timber framed carriage of some type to the left, again, if anybody has any information I would love to hear from you.

47263, outward leg of the Percy Boys` Club charter, Bath Spa-York, York station
Having arrived at York station 47263 awaits to leave the station for the carriage sidings where the train will be serviced for its return working later in the afternoon. I had travelled up on this train from Bath that had been chartered by the Percy Boys' Club. This club was a community organisation for the people and families of Bath. It is still in existence today but, quite rightly, has been simply renamed the Percy Community Club reflecting the widening of its offer to the city, see their web site at..... https://www.percycentre.org.uk After becoming 47587 and then 47736, 47263 was withdrawn in 2007 having been stored and out of use since 2004.

D2860, 26500, D1023 & 2818, on-display, NRM
No visit to York for a young enthusiast like myself in 1979 would be complete without a going to the have look around the National Railway Museum. Then it had just one main hall and was a fraction of the size it is today. Here, gathered around the turntable is a class 02 0-4-0 Yorkshire Engine Company shunter, number D2860, that only completed a paltry nine years in service before withdrawal in 1970. Next to the shunter is Bo-Bo British Thomson-Houston shunter of 1902 vintage number 26500, this did an amazing sixty two years in service. From more modern times, D1023 'Western Fusilier' had only been withdrawn for just over two years and looked very smart in its maroon livery. Finally, putting in an appearance to the right is Churchward designed 2-8-0 2818. so, then oldest locomotive in the line-up is the electric that pre-dates the steam by three years!

E5001, on-display, NRM York
A little out of focus but of interest is ex Southern electric E5001. This was built at Doncaster works in 1959 and was withdrawn in the autumn of 1977 having become 71001 under TOPS. This is the only picture that I have a class 71 either in-service or preserved.

55013, Harrogate-York ECS, York MPD
Having worked the 1L06 10.45 King's Cross to Harrogate in the morning, 55013 'The Black Watch' brings the empty coaching stock back into York. It is seen passing the depot on it final approach to the station where it would be removed from the stock.

55013, going on-shed, York MPD
Having worked up from King's Cross to Harrogate and then worked the return ECS back to York, 55013 'The Black Watch' goes on-shed at the MPD. The pilot is seen leaning out of there cab window as he negotiates the complex track into the depot. 55013 looks a little work stained and was going to stay on York shed for a day until Monday morning when it worked the 08.00 to King's Cross. The Black Watch was withdrawn on 20.12.81 after an engine failure at Wood Green four days earlier.

55006, ECS & 40101, stabled, York MPD
Using my telephoto lens on the Zenith EM has compacted things slightly outside of York station from the MPD. The picture shows 55006 ' The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry' at the head of an ECS working easing into York station. It is passing 40101 that is stabled on the depot.

55006, 16.13 York-London King`s Cross (1A26), York station
Having dashed back round from the depot gave me a second chance to capture 55006 'The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry' this time making a typically smokey departure from York station with the 16.13 to King's Cross. Looking at the exhaust, it could well have been working on one engine, a common occurrence. 55006's final working was The Night Scotsman on 04.02.81. On arrival at Edinburgh, it ran to Haymarket where a classified repair was required but not authorised. It was moved to Doncaster and cut up during the summer of 1981.

A going-away shot of 55006 ' 'The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry' leading the 16.13 to King's Cross from York station. With Holgate bridge in the background, the picture is full of interest. There are plenty of spotters on the end of the platform two of whom have on their parka coats and flared jeans, all very de rigueur at the time!

55018, 14.40 Berwick-upon-Tweed-London King`s Cross (1E14), York station
55018 'Ballymoss' waits at a busy York station leading the 1E14 14.40 Berwick to London King';s Cross service. Look at all the trolleys on the platform piled with mail bags ready to be loaded on to the Mk. II BSO or BFK marshalled behind the locomotive. Ballymoss' final working was on 12.10.81 when it experienced an engine failure (low air pressure) at Doncaster hauling the 1D08 19:40 King's Cross to Hull. One of its engines was donated to 55007 'Pinza' to keep that locomotive going almost to the end until, ironically, that also experienced engine failure Doncaster on 30.12.81; I wonder if it was the same engine that failed?

46014, return leg of The Percy Boys` Club charter, York-Bath Spa, Bath Spa station
Despite it being early May, the steam heat boiler appears to be on judging by the vapour escaping from the pipework at the front of 46014 as it stands at Bath Spa station. I have just travelled back from York behind this locomotive on the the return leg of the Percy Boys' Club charter. I have used my Helios hot shoe mounted flashgun to take this picture, something not allowed today according to Network Rail's station and railway photography guidelines.
