No visit to York for a young enthusiast like myself in 1979 would be complete without a going to the have look around the National Railway Museum. Then it had just one main hall and was a fraction of the size it is today. Here, gathered around the turntable is a class 02 0-4-0 Yorkshire Engine Company shunter, number D2860, that only completed a paltry nine years in service before withdrawal in 1970. Next to the shunter is Bo-Bo British Thomson-Houston shunter of 1902 vintage number 26500, this did an amazing sixty two years in service. From more modern times, D1023 'Western Fusilier' had only been withdrawn for just over two years and looked very smart in its maroon livery. Finally, putting in an appearance to the right is Churchward designed 2-8-0 2818. so, then oldest locomotive in the line-up is the electric that pre-dates the steam by three years!
