334020, SR 10.37 Edinburgh Waverley-Milngavie (2M37) & 170458, SR 10.33 Edinburgh Waverley-Dunblane (2P59), Edinburgh Waverley station
Whilst waiting for my wife and son to meet me on the concourse at Waverley, I took the opportunity to take a final few images. As the morning sunshine comes through the recently restored glass roof, 334020 waits to leave with the 10.37 to Milngavie with 170458 next to it that will form the 10.33 to Dunblane.

46100, outward leg of steam special, 10.37 Edinburgh Waverley-Carlisle (1Z64), Edinburgh Waverley station
46100 'Royal Scot' sits in the morning sun at Edinburgh Waverley's platform one. It is going to lead and unnamed steam special to Carlisle running as 1Z64. On leaving Waverley, it will head east to then take the Edinburgh Southside or Suburban line before taking Slateford Junction and then heading south west to Carstairs. After arrival at Carlisle, the train was diesel hauled back to Edinburgh whilst 46100 headed to Crewe with a support coach in tow.

390119, VT 10.51 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (9M54), Edinburgh Waverley station
Our train home stands at Edinburgh's platform nine. We travelled all the way back to Milton Keynes on 390119 'Virgin Warrior' as the 10.51 Edinburgh to Euston 9M54 service. Whilst I am not a huge fan of the Pendolinos, they are infinitely better than their Voyager cousins despite their stinking waste tanks.

334 030, SR 10.48 Edinburgh Waverley-Helensburgh Central (2H21), Edinburgh Waverley station
My last picture at Edinburgh Waverley prior to departure and following a great few days away. 334030 will depart from Waverley station in about five minutes forming the 10.48 to Helensburgh Central.

Slateford Junction signal box (Now home of Slateford Signalling School) (BR, 1960)
I was ready for this signal box as we passed on the Pendolino that we were taking home from our Scottish trip. It is the former Slateford Junction signal box built by British Railways Scottish Region in 1960. The box closed in 1981 so only had a working life of twenty one years! In recent years it has taken on a new use becoming base for the Slateford Signalling School. Indeed, to the right of the box were a number of semaphores and some short stubs of track.

66510, 66509 & 66230, stabled, Kingmoor yard
With the hills of the Northern Lakes on the skyline our Pendolino home passes Kingmoor yard north of Carlisle. On view in this image are concurrently numbered Freightliner operated 66509 and 66510 along with 66230 in its EWS livery.

Kingmoor (No.2) signal box (BR, 1963)
Kingmoor Number 2 signal box is a considerable state of disrepair. It was constructed to control the movement in and out of Kingmoor yard and was opened by British Railways in 1963 but only lasted a ridiculous ten years in use following the commissioning of the Carlisle PSB. The box contained a Westinghouse Miniature Control Desk entrance-exit signalling panel. After closure it became a relay room but I am not sure if it is still performing this role now?

37402, 68002 & 66305, Kingmoor MPD
With a pile of scrap cars in Michael Douglas' yard towering above Kingmoor MPD 37402 'Stephen Middlemore 23.12.1954-8.6.2013', 68002 'Intrepid' and 66305 await their next duties. DRS's depot at Kingmoor is a busy place with a full range of their locomotives looked after there.

66423, stabled, Kingmoor MPD
66423 is seen stabled at DRS's Kingmoor depot along with some of their coaching stock.

153358, NT 12.08 Carlisle-Barrow-in-Furness (2C46), Carlisle station
153358 waits in one of Carlisle's south facing bay platforms. The single-car unit will soon follow the stunning Cumbrian Coast line as the 12.08 to Barrow-in-Furness.

Carlisle PSB (BR, 1973)
Carlisle PSB was constructed and opened by BR in 1973 when it took over the responsibility from an incredible forty four mechanical and other boxes. It's future is now limited as Network Rail move ever closer to their utopian plan of having a handful of regional Signalling Centres. These ROCs will lead to the closure of a number of PSBs , some being relatively new like Saltley that only opened in 2003!

A second view of Carlisle's doomed PSB that will close presently when Network Rail's plans to control the entire network from a handful of signalling control centres comes to fruition.

Former Carlisle Upperby MPD
Now closed and fenced off, Carlisle's Upperby MPD looks a little sorry for itself. It was opened by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway and on passing to the LMS in 1923 it gained the code of 12A then, under BR it became CL. It is currently owned by EWS and used for wagon storage. Quite what its future holds I am not sure but as with all assets such as this, I hope careful consideration is given before it is sold off for inevitable housing development.

390119, VT 10.51 Edinburgh Waverley-London Euston (9M54), Preston station
Taken from the open door of our Pendolino, 390119 'Virgin Warrior.' as it pauses at Preston station. I like Preston station, it's a busy and purposeful place that has a lot of trains coming and going. The station will evolve further soon with the extension of the electrification masts to Blackpool bringing new services and new stock.

Tickets, Edinburgh Waverley-Milton Keynes central
Our tickets home from Edinburgh to Milton Keynes. A little more than the outward journey but still good value. Interestingly, there was no split-ticket saving for the return journey.
