Despite industrial action taking place on the railways for the day of our journey home, a reasonable hourly shuttle service was in operation from Euston northwards to Northampton. The train was strengthened to a three-sets and with what seemed like fewer travellers the train was perhaps quieter than would have been expetced.

350126, LN 14.24 London Euston-Northampton (2N69, 3E), London Euston station
As our train home was a three-set train led by 350126 and it was leaving from the shorter Euston's platform eight so getting a photograph of the front of the train was tricky as illustrated here. I am leaning against the barrier at the top of the platform ramp, leaning right back and have the lens on its widest angle setting! Due to various lens distortions at this extreme considerable work within Photoshop has been needed to get things looking sensible! My wife and I ravelled on the 14.24 from London back to Northampton.

London Euston station
A view of Euston station that will look very different in a few years. With much work already having been undertaken the scene will be dominated by the HS2 departure and arrival platforms enclosed within a grand new shiny station. In the foreground, a soon-to-disappear (from the WCML route that is) Voyager sits with a Class 390 Pendolino in the background.

710266, LO 14.15 London Euston-Watford Junction (2D84, RT), London Euston station
Aventra 710266 is seen just prior to departure at Euston's platform nine working the 14.15 service to Watford Junction. These units look to me more reminiscent of some sort of continental metro train rather than a heavyweight service train not helped by their lack of a hi-viz yellow front end. Introduced in May 2019 (after the inevitable and customary delays) the fifty-four Class 710s have proved a successful design being, effectively, an overground underground train!

720606, 720608 & 720602, stabled, Wembley Yard
More new trains! Passing Wembley Yard a number of brand-new Bombardier (Derby) Class 720 Aventra units are seen. Nearest to the camera is 720606 with an unidentified unit tucked in followed by 720608 with 720602 at the rear. Decked out in their c2c livery the units will operate on the south Essex lines out of Fenchurch Street (with some to and from Liverpool Street) to Southend and Tilbury.

66419, unidnetified up Freightliner, Wembley Yard
Another former DRS Class 66, seen in its Genesee & Wyoming livery, sits in Wembley Yard proudly wearing its recently applied 'Lionesses' Roar' nameplates. Interestingly, it sits square in front of Wembley stadium where, of course, the Lionesses enjoyed their 2-1 victory in the Euros against Germany on 31.07.22 in front of a record-breaking eighty-seven thousand crowd. Unfortunately, I could not identify which service 66419 was leading on this particular day and Mike (with access to Freighmaster) had no luck either.

66767, 12.18 London Gateway-Hams Hall (4M47, 1L), Northampton St. James' Road bridge
Whilst making our way back from Euston on the rather slow stopper service to Northampton I had been tracking the progress of the 4M57 12.18 London Gateway to Hams Hall service behind us. On arrival, I left my wife at the station whilst I walked the shortish distance to collect the van and within a minute of positioning myself on Northampton's St. James' Road bridge 66767 'King's Cross PSB 1971-1921' appeared slowly around the corner. As can be seen, by the lighting, the sun has begun to set and I really had to ramp up the iso on the camera even to use the relatively slow 1/800th second shutter speed. 66767 appears to have recently been involved in hauling some sort of stone train given the heavy coat of white dust on its bogies and underframe.

Tickets, London Euston-Northampton
Our return tickets from Euston to Northampton were pretty good value but we did take advantage of our two-together card taking approximately one-third off the price. Averaged out each leg of the return journey came in at £13.50 which seems pretty good in these days of rampant inflation!
