New station taking shape, from Westbridge
Taken from Northampton's Westbridge the new station is seen taking shape. With the main building to the right the new footbridge is to the left but they are yet to be united. With all this work, it is a tribute to the various teams involved that the station managed to stay open and fully operational.

New footbridge, Northampton station
Under the beady eye of a worker on platform three, I take a photograph of the new station footbridge lift tower at Northampton station. During this work to fully rebuild the station, a temporary footbridge was built at the north end of the station and this can be seen through the first window frame of the new one complete with a passenger descending the steps.

New footbridge & station building, Northampton station
With the old station building still functional and in use it is somewhat dwarfed by the new one to the right that is having its cladding attached by the workers in the cherry picker. The new footbridge will join to the station structure at the far end above where the workers are located. The mud-covered road in the foreground used to give access to the station's long stay car park.

350242, 350238 & 350234, LM 08.13 London Euston-Northampton (1N09), entering Northampton station past the old overflow car park
The former long stay car park at Northampton station has now become a site for the storage of building materials associated with the construction of the new station taking shape behind where I am standing. Workers go about their business as the 08.13 Euston to Northampton arrives formed by 350242, 350238 and 350234.

New station taking shape, from Westbridge
I am yet to be convinced by the design of the new station at Northampton but it is far from complete so I will reserve my final judgement! The main building takes shape from the town's busy Westbridge surprisingly traffic-free! There is to be no access from this side with the main entrance located facing the trees to the right.

New main entrance, new Northampton station
The main entrance to the new Northampton station is at the moment bare and cold concrete. However, in the next year, they will be cloaked and carrying hundreds of passenger's feet in and out of the station. The main concourse will be located just out of view at the top of the steps.

Old station sign, Northampton station
The old station sign lies ignominiously on its side and badly broken ready for removal from the worksite where the new station is being constructed at Northampton. It would have been nice to have saved the sign and preserve it. Maybe not now, but in many years to come, this style of sign may well have the same collection value as enamels or even totems from the early British Railways days do now!

New station taking shape from ground floor level, Northampton station
Whilst the other side of Northampton's new station is clad with various coloured panels the side that faces the car park is almost completely glazed from top to bottom. It will afford lots of natural light to stream into the station with the main concourse being at first-floor level. In this view, the first of the vast double glazed panels have been applied to the framework. I suspect that this side of the station will age better to the eye than the clad sides with their brightly coloured panels that will go out of fashion more quickly than plain glass.

New station taking shape & old station, from ground floor level, Northampton station
Whilst construction of the new station at Northampton continues, the old one is very much still in use. Passengers now access the station down this narrow path that does get very congested at peak times. Over recent years the 1966 built station, designed by Ray Moorcroft described as 'three cowsheds bolted together' by Will Adams in his 2012 publication British Railways Past and Present book, has proved hopelessly inadequate hence yet another re-build!
