We took a family walk back from Whitby to Thornhill. For part of the walk, we crossed the impressive Larpool viaduct that can still be enjoyed by ramblers and cyclist alike today.

NER cast sign, Bog Hall
There was, and still is for that matter, a foot crossing over the railway just south-west of Whitby station at the delightfully named Bog Hall, or Boghall in local parlance. The crossing now leads over to a vast car park and riverside frontage with many pleasure boats moored up. However, this cast sign of North Eastern Railway heritage is long gone with just a standard red and white do not trespass on the railway notice installed. I really hope that when the sign was removed it was not merely skipped and broken up with a hammer rather that it lives on today in somebody's back garden.

Bog Hall signal box (NER, date not known)
The absolutely superb Bog Hall signal box located a short distance from Whitby station that had its own box. In fact, the block section between the two boxes would be no more than a few hundred yards. The box is a classic NER design but I have no date relating to its construction unless anybody can firm this up. Also, I have no idea when it was closed but I have seen an image of it still in use, if switched out, in 1983. Notice the signalman's 1970/71 Triumph 1500 FWD parked behind the box and an even rarer beast parked on Windsor Terrace in the form of a Daf 33 variomatic.

Bog Hall Signal Box (NER, Date not known) & crossing
A view of Bog Hall signal box looking back towards Whitby town with its famous seventh-century abbey on the skyline. The signal box was open and ins use on the day of my visit in 1980 but it was more commonly found to be switched ou being only a few hundred yards from Whitby box just around the corner to the left. The flat land beyond the box is now covered by a huge car park with the marina beyond and to the right much expanded. The level crossing has now been downgraded to a pedestrian foot crossing. I suspect all three of the vehicles have also gone. The 'T' registered BR Sherpa van was last on the road on 1986 but even when this was taken it was probably already rusting well! The Gas board Transit van may have survived a little better and was an infinitely superior drive than the Sherpa. Finally, note the former ambulance to the extreme right that I believe to be a Bedford J Series version with the conversion undertaken by Herbert Lomas of Wilmslow.

Pat, Mum, Dad, Les & Jeanette, Larpool viaduct
Not the most flattering of family photographs but an interesting one nonetheless! From left to right it shows my aunty Pat, mum, dad, uncle Leslie and my cousin Jeanette. They are all taking in the superb vista from high above the River Esk on the thirteen arch Larpool viaduct. The superb structure that dominates the Esk valley immediately south of Whitby was opened in October 1884 by the Scarborough and Whitby Railway that rang along the dramatic coastline between the two towns. It closed in 1965 but the viaduct remained and gained listed status in 1970. Today it remains very popular with walkers and cyclists forming part of the Scarborough to Whitby Rail Trail and is also part Scarborough to Whitby Cinder Track cycle route.
