We often visited a family second home on the North Yorkshire Moors just south of Whitby. Named Thornhill it provided a superb base for a family break for walking and exploring this superb part of the UK. On this trip, my parents and I were joined by my aunt, uncle and cousin for a short while. I also took a day trip from Whitby to Darlington via the impressive Esk Valley line. The photographs are taken on Ilford FP4 black and white film that I processed myself at college as part of my Photography A-level. They have scanned particularly well reinforcing the quality of Ilford film at this time.

A trip to Whitby to get provisions. Whilst my mum and dad were buying food I took a walk to the station.

2. A walk back from Whitby-30.10.80
We took a family walk back from Whitby to Thornhill. For part of the walk, we crossed the impressive Larpool viaduct that can still be enjoyed by ramblers and cyclist alike today.

3. Trip to Darlington-31.10.80
I took a return trip along the Esk Valley to Middlesborough and then pon to Darlington. Hoping for some Deltic action I was disappointed to only see one and that was out on test! However, I did see a Class 50 on a proving run from Doncaster works and got plenty of signal boxes, mainly taken through the droplights of the Class 101 DMU.
