Bog Hall Signal Box (NER, Date not known) & crossing
A view of Bog Hall signal box looking back towards Whitby town with its famous seventh-century abbey on the skyline. The signal box was open and ins use on the day of my visit in 1980 but it was more commonly found to be switched ou being only a few hundred yards from Whitby box just around the corner to the left. The flat land beyond the box is now covered by a huge car park with the marina beyond and to the right much expanded. The level crossing has now been downgraded to a pedestrian foot crossing. I suspect all three of the vehicles have also gone. The 'T' registered BR Sherpa van was last on the road on 1986 but even when this was taken it was probably already rusting well! The Gas board Transit van may have survived a little better and was an infinitely superior drive than the Sherpa. Finally, note the former ambulance to the extreme right that I believe to be a Bedford J Series version with the conversion undertaken by Herbert Lomas of Wilmslow.
