Whilst my wife was getting ready for our first day exploring Kraków I walked the short distance from our apartment to Main station. Later in the day, I left her for an hour at the conjoined Galeria Krakowska whilst she explored the shops.

ED250-020, 11.12 Kraków-Glówny-Warszawa Centralna (EIP3106), Kraków Glówny station
On arrival at Kraków's Glówny station, I was greeted by one of PKP's Pendolinos. ED250-020 is the final member of the class that emerged from Alstom's Savigliano Italian plant in January 2015. The rear car of the train is seen basking in some welcome sunshine and will work the 11.12 to Warszawa Centralna.

EP09-002, EU07-331 & EP09-030, stabled, Kraków Glówny station
There is always plenty of stabled locomotives to be seen around Kraków's Glówny due to it being the terminating and the starting point for InterCity services to Warszawa and other places throughout Poland that are not operated by PKP's Pendolino fleet. In one of the station's centre roads, two EP09s box in an older Class EP07. EP09-002 and EP09-030 are two of a forty-seven strong class whilst EU07-331 is one of a far more numerous class of some four hundred and forty-eight locomotives. With their ribbed sides, the Class 07s look to be a more dated design (1965 onwards) than the more modern slab-sided Class 09s (1990s).

EP09-012, stabled, Kraków Glówny station
With its twin pantographs raised EP09-012 is waiting to be attached to the rear of a set of stock that will leave for Warszawa. These forty locomotives were developed and built by Polish Railways for use exclusively on their high-speed (up to one hundred and sixty kilometres per hour) lines. In an all too familiar tale, the locomotives were initially very unreliable with the traction motors and compressors all giving a lot of problems. They are colloquially referred to as the 'Epoka' (the Epoch) in a nod to their classification letters. Incidentally, the E stands for Electric and the P for Passenger locomotive - easy isn't it!

Kraków signal box
What I believe to be Kraków signal box is seen from the platform end of the new Main station. Abroad, signal boxes are referred to as signal cabins but, name aside, they perform the same tasks as in the UK. I am not sure if this particular box is still in use as the whole station area and tracks date from 2014. If anybody has any further information I would appreciate it.

EN77-002, 10.44-Kraków Glówny-Kraków Airport (KML33326), Kraków Glówny station
EMU EN77-002 leaves Kraków Glówny station with the 10.44 shuttle service to the airport. A couple of units operate these shuttles throughout the day with it being a quick and efficient way to get in and out of the city especially as Glówny station is so close to the central old town where most visitors head for. I know very little about these Skoda built EMUs with precious little information online about them. If anybody can offer me any further information it would be much appreciated.

SM42-2454, ballast working, Kraków Glówny station
A total of over one thousand eight hundred of these SM42 shunters were churned out by the Fablok locomotive factory at Chrzanów with production commencing in 1967. Polish enthusiasts have a number of names for them. Probably the best is Wibrator (Vibrator) based upon the noise from the engine, a fact that I can concur with from standing close to SM42-2554 as it got away from Kraków Glówny station. It was hauling a number of loaded ballast wagons that were being utilised in connection with the extensive relaying of the track to the south of the station.

EP07-1014, 05.15 Lublin Glówny-Wroclaw Glówny (IC26104), Kraków Glówny station
EP07-1014 brings the 05.15 Lublin to Wroclaw into Kraków Glówny station at some speed. During a dwell time of about fifteen minutes, the locomotive to the right will come on to the back of the train for it to continue its journey to the Polish capital Wroclaw. Looking at a map, this, and a number of other trains on the PKP network, takes some very strange routes. Lublin is a city some distance northeast of Kraków and a relatively short direct distance from Wroclaw. Once it leaves Kraków it will head almost due north some distance to its destination. Never mind though, the joy of travelling in a comfortable compartment on a genuine carriage being hauled by a proper locomotive would trump the circuitous route for me any day!

ED78-029, 14.43 Skarzysko Kamienna-Kraków Glówny (R32314), Kraków Glówny station
The Impuls family of Class ED78 EMUs are operated by many different companies on Polish Railways with some only having a handful of these home-built units constructed by Newag. ED78-029 is operated by PKP within the Swietokrzyski region and in this case, is working the 14.43 from Skarzysko Kamienna and has just terminated here at Kraków Glónwy. Dating from 2014 these units hold a number of speed records for DMUs on the Polish network.

EP07-014, 05.10 Gdynia Glówna-Zakopane (TLK53100 & TLK 30101), Kraków Glówny station
Ninety-seven of the EU07s were converted to become EP07s and are referred to by Polish enthusiasts as Siódemka (The Seven) after their PKP classification. EP07-014 arrives at Kraków with the 05.10 Gdynia to Zakopane service. This train goes from virtually the most northerly point of Poland on the Baltic coast to the deep south in the Tatra mountains. Notice the condition of both the PKP liveried locomotive and the stock. They are immaculate and look very smart as did all the trains I saw throughout my stay. Some UK operators need to take note!

EU07-067, 10.37 Przemysl Glówny-Szczecin Glówny (TLK38104), Kraków Glówny station
The 10.37 Przemysl to Szczecin service arrives in Kraków Glówny where, after a locomotive change, it will depart in the direction that it arrived. The train crosses Poland virtually completely from east to north-west terminating in an industrial town very close to the German border. The service is being led by one of the unmodified EU07s number 067 that still retains its searchlight style front lights rather than the more modern Wipac style units.

EN77-002, 14.19 Kraków Airport-Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia (KML33238), Kraków Glówny-station
Having photographed EN77-002 earlier in the day on an airport shuttle service, it is seen again now working the through 14.19 Kraków Airport to Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia service. Wieliczka is a small town to the immediate south of Kraków that is probably best known for the huge underground salt mines that are now a very popular tourist attraction but in the past were associated with the forced Jewish labour during World War II.
