A total of over one thousand eight hundred of these SM42 shunters were churned out by the Fablok locomotive factory at Chrzanów with production commencing in 1967. Polish enthusiasts have a number of names for them. Probably the best is Wibrator (Vibrator) based upon the noise from the engine, a fact that I can concur with from standing close to SM42-2554 as it got away from Kraków Glówny station. It was hauling a number of loaded ballast wagons that were being utilised in connection with the extensive relaying of the track to the south of the station.
