EP09-012, stabled, Kraków Glówny station
With its twin pantographs raised EP09-012 is waiting to be attached to the rear of a set of stock that will leave for Warszawa. These forty locomotives were developed and built by Polish Railways for use exclusively on their high-speed (up to one hundred and sixty kilometres per hour) lines. In an all too familiar tale, the locomotives were initially very unreliable with the traction motors and compressors all giving a lot of problems. They are colloquially referred to as the 'Epoka' (the Epoch) in a nod to their classification letters. Incidentally, the E stands for Electric and the P for Passenger locomotive - easy isn't it!
