Hartington signal box (LNWR, 1899) (Preserved as tea room)
Hartington signal box stands high above the village of the same name where the station was situated. The line it was on linked with the North Staffs. network at Ashbourne and thence went on to Buxton via Parsley Hay Junction. The line was a dramatic and steeply graded affair that was built by the LNWR in the vain hope, like so often, that it would become an important through route. Passengers services ceased in 1954 with full closure coming in 1963.

Hartington's 1899 LNWR signal box is preserved today and in use as a tea room. Above, the levers are still in situ with some useful information and pictures to educate the visitors as to its history.

Hartington signal box (LNWR, 1899) (Preserved as tea room)
The preserved Hartington signal box situated some two miles and well above the village of the same name. The line was a fairly early closure with the trackbed sensibly acquired by Derbyshire County Council and is now part of the Tissington Trail cycle path that in itself is part of the Sustrans network.

58022 & 46035, stabled & 31270, 13.28 Rowsley-South Matlock, Rowsley South
At Peak Rail's Rowsley station, 31270 'Athena' makes a smokey departure with the 13.28 to South Matlock. The rather weather-worn Regional Railways livery was never actually carried by this 31 when it was in mainline service. It was withdrawn in May 2001.

58022 & 46035, stabled, Rowsley South
The sad hulk of 58022 stands in Peak Rail's Rowsley yard. However, if the ambitions of Project 'Icon' are to be realised, then the loco will run agin, at least the frame will as a replica of the former LMS 10000. 58022 was a 1985 Doncaster built loco. that had only recently arrived from Crewe having been purchased by the organisation behind the project. Behind the class 58 is 46035 stored in BR blue.

50030, stabled, Rowsley South
With rather faded large-logo paintwork but protected from the worst of the element by tarpaulins, 50030 'Repulse' awaits further work at its Peak Rail base. It is owned by the Renown Repulse Restoration Society and, until fairly recently, was operational.

With Project 'Icon's' 58022 putting in an appearance 45035 looks considerably smarter! However, looks can be deceiving. The Peak, that was formally owned by Pete Waterman, has been moved here from Crewe's Railway Age has an uncertain future. Let's hope somebody can take it on and that it will run once again.

3883, stabled, Rowsley yard
Whilst Peak Rail is ostensibly a home for diesels, there are steam locomotives too. Here, Hunslet built Austerity 0-6-0 3883 'Lord Phil' is in steam in Rowsley's yard. This little loco. was re-built by Hunslet in 1963 as an experiment to convert it to gas combustion with trials taking place at Kingham.

37152 & 5553, undergoing restoration, Rowsley yard
37152, in its Railfreight livery, stands in Peak Rail's yard at Rowlsey. After many years of work on the mainline, it was withdrawn as an EWS locomotive in 1999. It eventually arrived at Peak Rail in March 2006 where it has stayed since hauling trains up and down the preserved line.

D9539, stabled, Rowsley depot
Inside Rowsley repair and maintenance shop is D9539. This is one of the many class 14s that have entered preservation. So, one of British Railways' disasters with all the class being withdrawn five years after their introduction, has been turned into a major success in the preservation world. After its short stint the mainline, D9539 was used at Corby hauling heavy iron ore trains on their internal tracks, many of which were un-ballasted.

W51354 (set L720), stabled, Rowsley yard
Looking absolutely superb is a class 117 DMU power car W51354 that was part of NSE set L720. As a NSE set it was used on the North London lines and on the Marston Vale route between Bletchley and Bedford. It can be enjoyed again now running on the Peak Rail line.

D8, undergoing restoration, Rowsley depot
Work being undertaken to restore Peak D8 'Penyghent' to its former glory by the team from the North Notts. Loco. Group. Introduced in 1960, this was one of the pioneer Class 44 Peaks that were the first sub-set of the class to be withdrawn. Of the ten that were built, only this one and D4 (44004) 'Great Gable' have been preserved. The last time I saw D8 was as 44008 at Toton in October 1979, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/27432133804/x0014-0044-0008-le-leaving-toton

08830, stored, Rowsley yard
08830 shunter is a bit of a celebrity. Not only was it one of LNWR's fleet that was painted in gloss black and had the company initials reproduced in gold on the side but it is also one that has been modelled by Hornby with a very reasonably well-weathered example available in one of their famous red boxes. Here at Peak Rail, the real 08830 stands in a line of stock awaiting work.

37152, 5553, 5224 & 08830, undergoing restoration, Rowsley yard
A scene dominated by two GWR Collett designs, a 2-6-2 4575 and a 2-8-0 5205 series. In the foreground is 5553 that was the very last locomotive to leave Dai Woodham's infamous scrapyard in Barry. It was once owned by Pete Waterman who financed its first restoration. It languished at The Railway Age in Crewe after he sold his interests in Waterman Railways and moved here to Peak Rail last year needing another restoration. 5224 is still owned by Waterman and is under overhaul too. It was extracted from Barry in 1978 and, after its initial restoration, did the rounds running on a number of heritage lines.

50029, undergoing restoration, Rowsley yard
50029 'Renown' looks in a bit of a state at Peak Rail's Rowley facility. It is undergoing a restoration by the Renown Repulse Restoration Group but it looks as though they have a fair way to go! Unfortunately, 50029 was withdrawn following a catastrophic engine failure in 1992 and that same engine is still installed!

50030, undergoing restoration, Rowsley yard
50030 'Repulse' is undergoing an overhaul by the Renown Repulse Restoration Group at Peak Rail's Rowsley facility. The group saved 'Repulse' and 'Renown' in 2002 following the folding of Operation Collingwood when it looked like these two 50s would be cut-up. Work on Repulse has progressed well with a new engine installed with a complete re-wire under way.

W51396 (Set L720), undergoing restoration, Rowsley yard
This driving coach of Class 117 DMU set L720 at Peak Rail's Rowlsey depot has yet to undergo the transformation that W51354 has had. With evidence of its Network SouthEast paintwork still in visible on the side, it has had a lot of red primer applied in an effort to keep the worst of the ravages of rust away. Let's hope that time an resources allow this project to be finished and for it to be reunited with its classmate, W51354.

31270, 14.00 Matlock-Rowsley South, Rowsley South
31270 'Athena' arrives at Rowsley South station with the 14.00 from Matlock. Whilst Peak rail's facilities are on a large and interesting site, this end of the line is somewhat lacking in character, that the 'normals' may come to expect from a heritage line; this is a bit of a shame.

31270, running round, 58022 & 46035, stabled, Rowsley South
Taken from the station car park, 31270 'Athena' runs round its train at Rowsley south station. Behind it are 46035 and 58022.

Former Rowsley station, now part of Peak Shopping Village
The Peak Shopping Village is an outlet centre situated between Bakewell and Matlock in the Peak District. It is largely built on land that used to be occupied by the Midland Railway's goods yard, land on which the old station building, seen here, is located. It was once the terminus of the Midland route up from Matlock and the south and was constructed in 1849. It became redundant in 1862 when the line was extended to Bakewell and beyond via a chord to the south of this site. It lingered on as rail connected goods depot for many years and then lost its railway link when British Railways closed the entire Midland route through the Peak District in 1968. It was awarded Grade II listed status in 1972 so the building remained whilst all around was developed. It is now an integral part of the Peak Shopping Village with various smaller outlets using the building so its future is secure for the moment anyway.
