43140, GW 15.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C199) & 43131, GW 14.45 London Paddington-Swansea (1B46), London Paddington station
Two HSTs stand side by side at Paddington as they have done for forty years! 43140 to the left will work the 15.00 to Bristol Temple Meads whilst, to the right, 43131 will soon leave with the 14.45 to Swansea.

43186, GW 15.06 London Paddington-Plymouth (1C86), London Paddington station
The first passengers are joining their train as the stock is prepared to work the 15.06 to Plymouth. 43186 will bring up the rear of the 1C86. 43186 was introduced during the summer of 1982 to work the NE to SW route as part of set 253052.

At the country end of Paddington station two HSTs prepare to leave for the West Country. To the left 43177 will leave first in about five minutes time leading the 14.45 to Swansea. To the right, 43033 will leave in twenty minutes with the 15.00 to Bristol Temple Meads.

165124, undergoing re-railing following ECS derailment @18.00, 16.06.16, London Paddington station
Paddington was operating under a bit of pressure over the weekend of my visit due to the derailment of the Turbo 165124. It is seen here being recovered following its collision with an electrification mast. Thankfully, it was running into the station as ECS with nobody on-board except the driver; thankfully he was not injured. The RAIB report into the accident can be found at ..... https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/paddington-safety-digest/derailment-at-paddington-16-june-2016

43172, GW 11.28 Swansea-London Paddington (1L55), London Paddington station
The impressive vinyl graphics applied to the side of 43172 'Harry Patch - The last survivor of the trenches' are seen to full effect at Paddington station. Unfortunately, the power car was giving trouble and a couple of engineers are seen trying to sort the problem out. The HST had just arrived having worked the 11.28 from Swansea.

165124, undergoing re-railing following ECS derailment @18.00, 16.06.16, London Paddington station
The front car of 165124 looks in a pretty bad way as it sits forlornly against an electrification mast that it hit at about 25mph following it overrunning a signal on the entry to Paddington station. Luckily, the train was empty running in from Old Oak Common and nobody, including the driver, were injured. The RAIB report made a number of recommendations relating to driver eating arrangements and to route knowledge. The 165 was repaired at Derby and back in service in its new GWR green livery.

43002, GW 16.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C21), London Paddington station
I had decided to leave Paddington and head for King's Cross. I happened to have to change tube trains at Edgware Road station that has 4G coverage. Whilst waiting on the platform I had a quick look at Rail Gen emails and there was a posting to say that celebrity HST 43002 was just arriving at Paddington. So, I hopped back on a District Line tube to Paddington again. I am still not sure how my Oyster Card coped with that particular move? Freshly repainted in BR blue and looking fabulous, 43002 'Sir Kenneth Grange' sits at the stops ready to return west with the 16.00 to Bristol temple Meads.

43002 (253001), GW 16.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C21), London Paddington station
As the passengers walk to find their seats aboard the 16.00 Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads none even notice the celebrity HST power car that will be propelling them on their westward journey. This fresh paintwork is about as close as it gets to the as-built livery of 1976. Forty years ago, 253001 started thrashing up and down the GWML and what an amazing job it, and its classmates, have done since!

Nameplate & decals, 43002 (253001), GW 16.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C21), London Paddington station
A picture reminiscent of times gone by. When the HST was launched to the travelling public in 1976 this is how they saw the power cars. Apart from the Inter-City Swallow livery, this is how they stayed until the plethora of liveries abounded under privatisation. Proudly displaying its 'Sir Kenneth Grange' nameplates (the designer of the HST), 43002 sits at the back of the 16.00 to Bristol Temple Meads at Paddington station.

43002 (253001), GW 16.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C21), London Paddington station
It's a shame that GWR and Angel Trains (the owners of the HSTs) did not re-paint a complete set of stock into the as-built livery like the power car 43002 'Sir Kenneth Grange'. They cited issues regarding access for partially sighted passengers due to a lack of differentiation of door colour. Here at Paddington station, 43002 recreating set 253001 waits to leave with the 16.00 to Bristol Temple Meads.

43144, GW 10.01 Pembroke Dock-London Paddington (1L62), London Paddington station
43144 waits to leave Paddington station with the 10.01 to Pembroke Dock. This 260 mile journey is one of contrast. After travelling along Brunel's famous billiard table line at full service speed, the train plunges under the River Severn. It continues fast through South Wales then making much more sedate progress though to West Wales passing through absolute block signalling and travelling on jointed track. I could not think of a better way to do this than in an the comfort and space of a Mk. III HST coach. I hope the the new trains being introduced in the next few years are a worthy replacement.

I turned my camera for one final picture of 43002 'Sir Kenneth Grange' in its retro. BR livery as worn from its introduction in 1976. It is about to work the 16.00 to Bristol temple Meads. Next to it, Heathrow Express' 332010 is preparing to leave with the 15.55 to Heathrow Terminal 5.

Commemorative plate & number, 43002, GW 16.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C21), London Paddington station
The subtle plaque attached to the side of power car 43002 says it all. The reproduction paintwork is a nice touch and has been done very well with 43002 taking on the appearance of how it looked when it was launched to the travelling public on 4th October 1976.

43305, GR 17.00 London King’s Cross-Edinburgh (1S26) & 365505, GN 16.22 London King’s Cross-Peterborough (1P60), London King’s Cross station
43305 sits on the blocks at King's Cross being prepared to work the 1S26 17.00 to Edinburgh. Next it, 365505 will work the 16.22 to Peterborough. Looking at the station clocks, it is already two minutes late!

43060, GR 17.10 London King’s-Cross-Hull (1H10) & 43480, GC 16.47 London King’s Cross-Sunderlnd (1N94), London King’s Cross station
An East Midlands HST set was on long-term hire to Virgin East Coast due to a shortfall of their own sets. Here, 43060 sits at King's Cross' platform two with the 17.10 to Hull. Next to it, Grand Central's 43480 will leave a little earlier with the 16.47 to Sunderland. This power car still retains its buffer beams as fitted by BR in 1987. This was so they could be used as surrogate DVTs and class 91s due to their late delivery and commissioning. The HSTs were used on the front and rear of sets of the new MkIV stock, that was ready. After delivery f the new locomotives, the HST were returned to their normal work but the buffers were never removed.

91118, GR 16.30 London King’s Cross-Edinburgh (1S25), London King’s Cross station
91118 waits to leave King's Cross leading the 1S25 16.25 to Edinburgh. Out of all the liveries carried by these trains over the years the Virgin East Coast one looks particularly smart. It is likely that this will be their last reincarnation until they are replaced by the IETs at the end of 2018 and the start of 2019. However, what will happen to these far from life-expired train sets after that is anybody's guess; too good to scrap surely?

43251, GR unidentified down working, London King’s Cross station
43251 looks very smart in it relatively fresh coat of Virgin East Coast red paint with complimentary graphics. Like their class 91 and 82 cousins, the HST look good in this livery. 43251 will lead an unidentified down express. This power car was delivered into service as 43051 as part of Western Region set 253025.

365538, GE 15.30 Cambridge-London King’s Cross (1C67), London King’s Cross station
The rather clumsy and complicated end of King's Cross looking across to where the old stabling and fuelling point was located sees 365538 arriving with the 15.30 from Cambridge. Hard to believe now that where the white buildings are now located once saw Deltics, 47s, 40s and 31 stabled.

67023, stabled, London King’s Cross station
67023 waits for the call in its stabling siding at London King's Cross station. The large building behind the 67 is the new King's Cross signalling centre, what you and I would call a signal box but on a larger scale!
