An East Midlands HST set was on long-term hire to Virgin East Coast due to a shortfall of their own sets. Here, 43060 sits at King's Cross' platform two with the 17.10 to Hull. Next to it, Grand Central's 43480 will leave a little earlier with the 16.47 to Sunderland. This power car still retains its buffer beams as fitted by BR in 1987. This was so they could be used as surrogate DVTs and class 91s due to their late delivery and commissioning. The HSTs were used on the front and rear of sets of the new MkIV stock, that was ready. After delivery f the new locomotives, the HST were returned to their normal work but the buffers were never removed.
