To celebrate a colleague who was leaving work a curry night was arranged in the nearby town of Higham Ferrers. As it was such a smashing summer's evening I left home a little early so I could spend an hour or so at Harrowden Junction to capture what was about. Oh. yes, and it was a very convivial evening giving or colleague a good send-off!

222103, EM 17.30 London St. Pancras-Nottingham, Harrowden Junction
222103 passes Harrowden Junction working EMT's 17.30 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. It is a stunning summer's evening with the lower lighting (when compared to the high sun and deep shadows during the day) adding a super quality to the image.

222007, EM 16.35 Sheffield-London St. Pancras, Harrowden Junction
Not stopping at Wellingborough, a couple of miles behind me, means that 222007 working the 16.35 Sheffield to St. Pancras service is taking Harroden Junction at full line speed. If the plans come to fruition, this scene is set to change dramatically over the coming years with the route being returned to four tracks seeing a second slow line being reinstated. Also, the line is due to be electrified thus spoiling the unobscured wide vista. However, the start/stop nature of the electrification process may well mean this will not happen for many years yet!

43046, EM 17.28 Nottingham-London St. Pancras, Harrowden Junction
I feel that the East Midlands Trains livery applied to the elderly HSTs really suits them and is far better than the dull FGW paint scheme applied to the ones operating in and out of Paddington. Leading, 43046 makes a fine sight as the 17.28 Nottingham to St. Pancras service passes Harrowden Junction. As a fare-paying passenger, I would infinitely prefer making this journey in a Mk. III coach rather than on-board a Meridian with their underfloor engines spoiling the ambience.

43064, EM 17.45 London St. Pancras-Derby, Harrowden Junction
On the slow line, power car 43064 leads the 17.45 St. Pancras to Derby EMT service past Harrowden Junction between Wellingborough and Kettering. This power car first saw service on the Eastern Region in 1977 being part of set 254005 challenging the Deltics' supremacy at that time!

222004, EM 17.27 Sheffield-London St. Pancras, Harrowden Junction
With the lengthening shadows from the July evening sun 222004 passes Harrowden Junction working EMT's 17.27 Sheffield to St. Pancras service. The wheat fields on either side of the tracks are doing well but need some more weeks of good solid sunshine to ripen them off to be harvested next month.

222009 & 222011, EM 18.00 London St. Pancras-Melton Mowbray, Harrowden Junction
An interesting anomaly of East Midlands Trains' timetable is the twice-daily service that operates to and from Melton Mowbray. A commuter service leaves the Leicestershire town in the morning travelling via Manton Junction, crossing Harringworth viaduct to then join the MML at Glendon Junction. The balancing working (18.00 ex St. Pancras) operates in the evening and is seen here passing Harrowden Junction worked by 222009 and 222011. Both the outward and return services run as empty stock to and from Melton from Etches Park (Derby) taking Syston North Junction.

66706, 13.56 West Burton PS-Theale Lafarge (6V08), Harrowden Junction
The 13.56 West Burton Power Station to Theale empties passes Harrowden Junction led by a very smart 66706 'Nene Valley'. In contrast to the de-branded and tatty former Freightliner wagons GBRf's locomotive looks very smart in the lovely evening sunshine.

43089, EM 18.15 London St. Pancras-Leeds, Harrowden Junction
HST power car 43089 leads the 18.15 St. Pancras to Leeds service past Harroden Junction in some superb summer evening light. Like the Melton Mowbray service photographed a little earlier, this is a one-off service with a corresponding up working early in the morning from Leeds. It is used by EMT to get an HST to Leeds' Neville Hill depot for servicing and any necessary exams.

222016, EM 18.02 Nottingham-London St. Pancras, Harrowden Junction
My final photograph of the evening at Harrowden Junction before heading off for a celebration curry with work colleagues sees 222016 heading south working the 18.02 Nottingham to St. Pancras EMT service. Notice the outlines of three wind turbines on the skyline. These are visible from many parts of East Northamptonshire.
